Obrua Nur | A Teens Esk8 Journey

It’s done now :grin:

Hey everybody!

My name is Denali, I’m a 14 year old living in northern California, (Grass Valley/Nevada City) Some of you might know me, I’m the noob here.:joy:
I’ve wanted to build or at least try a mountain board ever since I saw one of trampa’s jump videos about 7 months ago, it just looked so fun, Especially because me and my family are avid snowboarders and the idea of riding something “like a snowboard” but more year round sounded so cool. (My parents thought I was gonna seriously hurt myself on it, which I might… but it will be worth it!)
I decided on this name recently, to symbolize the contrast between light and dark, something I aimed for in this build. Obrua is derived from “umbra,” which means “shadow” in Latin, a term that evokes a sense of darkness, obscurity, or something hidden. Nur is a word in several languages, such as Arabic, where it means “light” or “radiance.” Together I thought it could symbolize the contrast and very different ideas, yet merging and looking amazing together. “Balance of opposites” I started researching, starting around march of this year, slowly soaking in information, which at the beginning, I knew NOTHING about electric skateboards and really anything to do with electricity. I started on YouTube, watching people like Mboards and DIY electric skateboard builders, then I found the Reddit threads, and finally a guy there pointed me towards this forum, I am so thankful because that led me on this incredible journey.

(Please don’t be too harsh on me because I really didn’t have any idea what I was doing, to be honest I still don’t😂)

To start I want to thank all the amazing people on this forum for guiding me through this-

@Egtscs- you were the first one to comment on my initial build list, and that really boosted my motivation.
@Venom121212 of Course, because you have what seems to be endless positivity and that made my day every time I went onto this forum
@tech.shit you answered so many of my questions with much more patience than you should have had for my annoying self.
@poastoast thanks for such a generous offer with those motors!
@SirVesa thanks for hooking me up with the motors and pulleys! And all the advice you gave me.
@BenjaminF the belts work perfect
@zero_ads I can’t thank you enough for hooking me up with that deal on the d100
@xsynatic your wisdom on esk8 is amazing and you gave me an understandable answer every time.
@MBS thanks for the deck!!
@OzzysPaw thanks for that screaming deal with the matrix 2s and idea mounts!
@andoug you are one the reasons this build was able to happen, your deal on the battery and remote fueled my motivation to build this. Thank you.
@mulletboardermobbin thanks for all the help!
@b264 your very insightful
@tuckjohn thanks for the charger!
I’m sure there are people that helped me missing in these shoutouts but I can’t remember.
@Pecos thanks for helping me through some last minute issues and giving me new ideas!

This build was also pushed to happen faster because I am using this as my 8th grade graduation project, and of course so I can win BOTY :stuck_out_tongue:
I have bought all these parts with my own money, (not daddy’s money) which has taken a lot of dedication and effort, but it is definitely worth it. I reffed soccer, made mochi donuts, and lots of other small jobs.
Here’s some pics of me making $$

Here we go

—The build—-

*parts list

Battery-12s2p

Vesc- MakerxD100

Motors-trampa 6376 160kv

Pelican 1150

Deck-comp 95 silver hex

Hubs- rockstar 2s

Trucks- matrix 2 with red blocks

Idea mounts

Vx2 remote

3d printed vesc case

3d printed 72t pulleys

Rando Aliexpress bindings

4A charger

Pre soldered xt60-xt90

Nylon Cable sleeving

460mm belts

Love :blush:

Let’s get into it.
The first purchase I made was an old MBS ambush warrior, it had trucks, deck, hubs and tires, though I only used the tires in the end due to compatibility issues.

From there, after days of research, I bought a comp 95 silver hex deck, which is perfect for me, slightly stiff but comfortable.
If anybody has a kaly deck, I’m looking to get one, it could be fairly used if I can get a good
Discount :smirk:. Then in a chain of events and insanely nice people hooking me up, the parts were ordered the 12s2p battery came in which I know is pretty small (362 wh), but considering I’m only 110 pounds, I think it will hold me over for a bit.

Then the matrix 2 trucks and Idea mounts

then the vesc

then the motors

Then the remote

Then the belts and so on. I used my 3d printer as much as I can, with a lot of help from my dad, who is a skilled graphic/product designer. I printed 72t pulleys, an x thingy for the truck mounting screws… because it looks cool and I printed vesc case out of glass reinforced nylon.

I created a good base, which I tested with my sister towing me around on a quad, it gave me a good feel of the board.

I slowly worked my way into the actual building of it.
I put the drivetrain together

I put it all together in a mock up, it doesn’t look half bad :joy:

I learned how to solder and I think it went fairly well. I had to switch a a qs8 for a xt90, 4-5.5mm bullet connectors, motor wire extensions…etc.

Gotta insert the pic of mini deck with pneumatics :wink:

I got it all connected and ran wizard, which was surprisingly not that hard.

Motors-60 Amps
Battery- 40Amps
Regen- -10 amps

Also if anybody has a pair of gear drives they want to let go of, I don’t care too much about detailed specs, I definitely want to try out gears sometime soon. Oh and please give advice and suggestions on things I can add/change about the board.

I’m decent at snowboarding-

Not that I am expecting to by any means, but If I could get nominated for BOTY or get close, that would be amazing, this mountainboard has been all I have been thinking about for a year and I am so happy to finally have this done and rideable, this is nowhere near the level that some people create there boards, but I feel it is a good entry level board. It would not have been remotely possible without the help of all you guys, and I am soooo thankful for everybody that helped me along the way. The total cost was around 950 USD which was about 400 bucks under budget. That only happened because of the insanely generous people on this forum that gave at least 75% of my build. Feel free to vote for me :wink:

Added some random bike extender mount for lights, put them on the matrix 2s. they’re slightly loose so l’ll probably print @Fackos adapter, but they are a nice addition for lights/gopro etc.

Totally forgot to post vids of actually riding it :joy:
(I’ve never ridden an esk8, let alone a emtb, so don’t mind how clumsy I look :eyes:)

Dude you killed it! You spent the time reading, asked the right questions and didn’t rush things. It’s obvious that you want to know why you’re doing something and how each component works rather than just following an instruction manual. That kind of motivation is awesome.

On a side note, what’s up with those doughnuts? Trade you for some Trampa heel straps :grin:

I started esk8 same way. Been snowboarding a while, got into longboard in the warmer season, then esk8 later on. Your 1st build definitely looks way cleaner than mine. Awesome work. :ok_hand:

Edit: Now I’m thinking about it, my build honestly is pretty low bar to compare to.

Thanks man, that means a lot coming from you. Those are mochi donuts :joy: (they are truly delicous)

Well done man. My build thread as a 15 year old was such a train wreck, you came out at the end with something solid. Congrats, and enjoy!

Dude, this is awesome!

It’s awesome to see you put so much thought and effort into EVERY SINGLE PART of this build, even the name. My first board was named Boardy Mcboardface :sweat_smile:

Learning is badass dude, and you’re doing an excellent job of it. (Also none of us know what we’re doing)

I’m really glad that I had an impact on this build, something tells me this won’t be your last and I’m glad to have been able to help.

And suddenly you’re the coolest 8th grader at school :laughing:

Nice job! I really doubt that will be the last time you use that skill either.

Please be very cautious with this setting though, most Chinese pre built battery packs (like the meepo pack) will discharge through the BMS. I’m not sure if you’ve already considered this or not but BMS discharge limits can be dangerous if your battery current limits in VESC are higher than the battery current limits in your BMS.

Essentially the BMS acts as a fuse, if it reaches a certain current level (let’s say 50a) it will shut off any ability to use that battery, (including throttle and brakes) this does protect the battery but may be dangerous for the rider as a BMS discharge cutout feels like having a rug pulled out from under you at full throttle)

You’re too humble dude, this is an awesome build done really well on a pretty dang tight budget.

You’re probably right, I’m already feeling an urge to put together a smaller 6 in pneumies build for my brother :laughing:

I will do some more research on the battery and be careful when tuning the settings :saluting_face:
I am looking into getting a bigger battery, this one will barely get enough range for me to make it to school.

:joy::wink: yup
