DIRT MACHINE | E-MTB | E-TOXX | 1:6.25 GEARING

I had another ride in the same area and a lot of fun. I have no car so normally it is quite difficult for me to visit other places by bus or train with the board plus gear, too bulky and heavy. I borrowed a car so after work I could ride in a part of the vienna woods just 15-20 minutes away.

The jungle (for me as city kid ) starts here, in the background you see vienna.

Deeper in the jungle

Last year I was riding there with 8" tires and it was a bit frustrating because of too less ground clearance hitting roots and stones all the time. With 9" it’s much better but still not enough for hardcore terrain. I mean at least 20"-26" would be perfect :joy:

hey @rich !
Nice story - unfortunatly i had the same problem in Tirol. Wanted to cruise a very nice trail that i recognized on a hiking day. I drove slowly about 20km/h and suddenly a “ranger” appeard. He also was yelling at me and said it is forbidden to drive here. I also stayed calm and frienldy - got no nice reactions from him. He said i have to leave and he will escort me with his car…so yeah…damn

I would love to ride this track/path with my eMTB … especially because ebikers and mountainbikers crushing down this track very fast - while “normal” people are hiking at the same time…

now tell me what is more dangerous.
enough complaining.

have a nice day and a safe ride

Damn…
Next time you could say “I’m very thankful for the escort because I have no idea where I am and my battery is empty so I have to walk”. “How long is the way back?”

Did you try to ride paths for MTB where are no hikers allowed? Maybe there is a small bike park with uphill trail instead of cable car / chairlift in your area. I want to try this, too. The wide flow lines should be great to ride.

there are a some MTB downhill path in Tirol but never tried one. Maybe I should ask/try them out hahaha

Small update, since may I’m waiting for a replacement rotor from APS for the smashed 6384V2 in vain. Before my hair get grey I need a different solution and saw one motor here for sale and bought it.

No crazy sounds, no rusty stator :ok_hand:
Ready for battle hardening and silicone on hall sensor PCB

extra safety for the wires

Glued helicals with Loctite 648

Just need to solder extension wires and then should be ready to ride again on wednesday.

One thing I don’t understand, Bruno says this motors have no temp sensors (which is baaaaaad) but why the temp sensor wire is on the connector and even soldered to the PCB?

Maybe the sensor cables they produce/buy come with all 6 wires but the temp sensor on the PCB isn’t populated, so they just connect it to keep it from having to be cut out or flopping around.

Idk though its just a guess. :man_shrugging:

My oil slicks have the wobble hanger issue also.
I got new baseplates and bushings in black unfortanly and well no more wobble.
I think they are made different. the oilslick also does not have built in nuts.
The black baseplates have built in nuts so you only need the bolts. Very nice addition.
I find it odd they are the same name but have some different specs such as wobble, and well the
nuts not being made into the base like the black ones. Ive had a lot of MBS parts and honestly
think they need some OC. I have a sec of blue hubs I cant use with bearing spacers by lacroix
since the spacers are to large for the blue ones, but put them in the black hubs and they work fine. So my thoughts are not all there parts are made the same or they are slacking a little in QC.

I have seen that before on different motors. The pcb might come like that from a sub supplier and asking for the temp sensor get populated will add cost. When I asked for motors in China they usually add 5-10$ for the temp sensor only.
If you find the right temp sensor on mouser for example you could add one by your own.
(Don’t ask me which one :joy: I did know it once, but forgot it again :man_facepalming:)

Not all of the black metal base plates do have that. I think that was only on the first batch made like that. My guess is that it was contra productive as too many just stripped the soft aluminum and with it it was hard to fix the nut.
Bought a replacement metal matrix2 truck like two weeks ago and they look like this now

Thats what Im saying, they have built in nuts now.
The Oilslicks dont have that. All the Black bases and full trucks I have do have them nuts.

Ah got ya now. The design of the metal matrix 2 truck changed than 3 times since release.
The first I bought had a nut shaped cut out so you still need the nut, but no key to fix the nut. I know of other people don’t having those cut outs (like it is on the oil slick if I understood right) and lastly there is that design with the build in nut.
I can imagine the next batch oil slick will just have that too, just wasn’t designed in the time of production.

I personally like to have the nut fixed manually though. Yes it’s a pain sometimes, but I also had it not only once that I the bolts were sitting so tight that I couldn’t turn the bolts but the but was still kind a lose. With the current design I couldn’t get the but tight.

I was going to use dual lock to fix the battery to the deck inside the enclosure; do you think that’s okay or would you rather recommend something else, e.g. velcro?

Late reply so maybe you did it already

I’m not a big fan of duallock for esk8 because it unlocks due to vibrations. Earlier in this thread I wrote that the light on my commuter never popped off with pneumatics (compared to thane on every crack). Well last week the duallock unlocked and I lost the light somewhere…

I would prefer velcro (or gluing with butyl tape) to fix the battery to the deck. Velcro has some cushioning compared to duallock and doesn’t unlock due to vibrations.

What I recognized is that my top mount enclosure starts to wiggle up and down so the velcro got some play but not sideways.

I did a modification to the bottom of the vesc enclosure because it’s a heat trap. It doesn’t take long until the vesc 6’s reach 60°C. I never had overheating problems but want to run them cooler.

Mounted the vescs and added new neoprene tape for better airflow

For the motors I soldered extension wires but couldn’t route them on the hanger as intended. I need to cut the phase wires and extend them without connectors. I’m not patient so I just connected them without extensions for now so I could ride

It started to rain so I took a break under the highway.

I wanted to tweak some settings and connected to Vesc-Tool app. No problem on the master vesc but everytime when I connected to the slave it said “too old FW”. Furthermore the board had strange behaviour afterwards. Very low power and brakes plus stuttering motors, totally fucked up. After powering off/on it was normal again. This happened several times, then I gave up on having stronger brakes :man_shrugging:

The hole in the vesc enclosure seems to help, the temp was about 45-50°C (so about 10°C cooler).

Then I continued my ride in the rain and had a lot of fun especially because nobody was out there. It was quite muddy and wet and I captured nature and small animals

What can you tell about Wexl trails?

Saw one of your latest videos, the trails seems super nice and wide enough for emtb riding.

Wish I could ride on some of them one day as where I live there is very poor choice of such trails

Good reminder, I started a new thread about riding in bike parks and forgot to link the thread here

I changed the setup for the purpose of trail riding because I want to visit different bike parks within the next time.

The Wexl trails are sick and the flow trail is so rad and never-ending. There is a jump line, too but I can’t jump with this setup, I would need the other board but then I couldn’t ride.

Interesting thing about hard deck and vibrations where vision gets shaky and gives headache after a while.

Has happened to me as well on rough gravel roads, always makes me to think how full suspension on a board would be awesome if it was not that expensive.

Otherwise thanks for referencing to the other bike park thread, had missed it since not visiting as often this place

Such and awesome adventure :see_no_evil: I hope one day I can ride something similar, but probably need more practise with jumping etc. Also some parts were really rocky, I understand why your vision went blurred… haha

And I really like the custom warren deck looks so slick :love_you_gesture:

How have the etoxx trucks been holding up for you? Haven heard or seen anything about them in a while

I didn’t manage to destroy or bend them :sunglasses: It’s even hard to see any scratches

The trucks are still in development and not in the final stage. I have just installed new prototypes on the deck and will test them. They look and are different to the previous versions but I can’t tell you what changed and why :man_shrugging:. Secret shit

Small teaser

I’m so ready to ride but need to fix the vesc enclosure first. Unfortunately both Vesc 6 regularly overheat which sucks. That’s why I thought about to mount them upside down on an aluminium plate for better heat dissipation.

I wanted a full alu enclosure but have no time and also am concerned about problems with the remote receiver which is in there, too. So I planned to use the ABS enclosure which I had like this for now.

BTW I love those grommets which I use since years.

The bore hole in the enclosure is 20mm and you can cut the grommet as you want. I made slices as well to feed through the sensor connectors. One grommet is for 3 phase wires and the sensor wires. The rubber is strong but flexible. I was riding many times in rain or hard rain and had no water ingress (with ABS lid of course not like in the pic :joy:).

So I prefer to have all connectors inside the enclosure which leads me to my new problem. It is impossible to connect the phase and sensor wires when the vescs are upside down. I’m trying since 2 days and cursed a lot. I gave up and will mount the plate upside down without any enclosure, just need to find some shock absorbing stand-offs like small bushings. I want to ride tomorrow. If it rains I’m in trouble but at least the overheating issue should be gone for sure.

I also ordered some cells for swappable batteries. I want longer rides but not a heavier board. I haven’t decided yet but I guess a light-weight slim 12s3p and a 12s5p or 4p with P42A.

Oeh nice, cant wait to see more :smiling_imp:

And nice to see an update on your build again
Do you know what your fancy grommets are called?
