Weird theories and ideas thread! any ideas welcome

Haha that would be glorious. Making the board act like a segway is the easy part, as long as you have individual control over each ESC, but idk how to do the following part. A bluetooth beacon seems too easy to get confused for other signals, GPS isn’t precise enough for tight spaces. Maybe IR retroreflectors on your helmet?

what about a machine learning camera that follows a certain pattern printed on a sticker on your back or something? Or maybe a bright IR led on your backpack that the board can follow using two cameras with a wall between them to give relative direction?

I dont think you can individually drive the motors on a dual vesc tho.

Would need two singles with ppm mixed with the follow code

Yeah, I was thinking IR photoresistors to track the brightest point instead of a complicated machine vision system. It doesn’t matter whether the light comes from the board or yourself too much, but I was thinking powering it from the board is easier than powering something on your person. You would also want to make it so that the board can still track you if you turn around.

You might need a 2x single setup. Or control moment gyros lol.

This is the future. Its not longer an esk8, its a robot that we ride around as transportation.

And I meant put the IR on the person so it knows what to follow since no one else will be walking around with a bright-ass IR led on them. And if you turn around thats fine since you’ll be facing the robo- I mean board anyways.

I believe someone here actually did this.

and it follows them around like a dog on its hind legs??

Made the board balance on 2 wheels with the vesc balance app.

I remember that, but it required a human rider to be able to turn, IIRC. This needs independent wheel control.

bro add a tiny hydraulic system and it can jump like a tiny dog too XD

Semi-transparent, colored enclosures. For that 2001 look.

Use an N64 start button as a power switch for bonus points.

Hold up. Use a straight up empty N64 shell as a top mount enclosure with a Tony hawk’s pro skater cartridge for a loop key.

And do a PCB - based battery build inside too. That kind of enclosure would look awesome

I’m just imagining a board that you slap a pro skater cartridge in now, and it turns on and starts playing the soundtrack. Yessssssssss I need it.

Rollin down the street wit my six fo :sob::rofl::rofl::rofl:

@Linny how big can u print :joy:

Shapeways have some materials like that

whats the middle one for :smirk:

You had to be there.

Run backwards trucks. Why? Because then you lean away from your turn. Wheelbite would be near impossible.

  1. Using boost converter on a 12s pack to power a 20s esc.
    image
Useful when you wanna go faster by upgrading to a higher voltage esc without ugrading the battery as well or not even considering gear ratio. Big brains! Voltage sag would also be eliminated cuz the boost converter module will output same exact volts and amps regardless of the soc of the battery. Big Brains!! Cons are the battery will die fast, prone to fireworks cuz of the higher-than-normal current draw involved when boosting voltage, and there’s no available boost converter module powerful enough for such purpose. Overall terribly impractical system.

  2. ESC as buck and boost
    image
Vesc is a sophisticated buck converter if I’m not mistaken. By buck I mean its output voltage will only be less than or equal to the input. Redesign vesc, or just its firmware, so that it functions as both buck and boost. Buck phase for 0-100% usual duty cycle then automatically switch to boost phase when driving beyond that. I imagine the results would be the same as field weakening - higher than normal rpm at the price of much higher current draw.

Weird idea time.

What if your board had a low power FM transmitter inside that broadcasted on every FM channel simultaneously a loop recording similar to:

“pay attention…skateboarders ahead…pay attention…skateboarders ahead…pay attention…skateboarders ahead…pay attention…skateboarders ahead…pay attention…skateboarders ahead…”
