Weird theories and ideas thread! any ideas welcome

Running 4 different size wheels? Mixing pneummie and 'thane?

obviously apply symmetry xD i was workin with a $30 phone. i just think itd be really cool if we had boardnamics profile hangers that werent a straight line. add a half inch of height and wheelbase to each end for science, and i think theyd look nice.

could also support beefier motors, 70mm and maybe bigger, imagine 80100 (efoil) motors on it.

Oh. Well that would make it not very weird

You can gain more wheelbase with different baseplates and height with risers

Risers move the truck pivot away from the deck which can change things in ways the rider may not want.

Hey good point. I was just throwing out available options

Wheels hitting the deck changes things in ways many riders may not want.

Different tradeoffs for different people I guess

i can put risers in for expected results, or i could use weird, extended hangers, for science.

Realistically, how much would aero help on a board? Thinking of things like fenders, diffusers, flicks, spoilers, etc. to smooth out airflow and channel some air around the legs and feet.

Obviously the rider is like 99% of the actual drag, but hey ten watts is ten watts, and it’s way easier than getting skinnier.

Hmm…interesting idea.
Drag increases linearly at low speeds but increases with the square of the velocity at higher speeds. Where that crossover happens would be important IMO because below that speed I think any aero would have little to no effect. But at above it the aero mods would have a bigger and bigger effect as the board speed increased.

You might have to go 80mph to start seeing any effects though, I don’t know. LOL…here come the ground-effect boards!

I’m thinking that any aero would have a much smaller effect than modifying our stance, wearing smooth clothing, and keeping our profile as small as possible.

Correct, but I’d like to keep on eating cookies, so I’m not getting any smaller :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I don’t think there’s any meaningful gains for downforce, but there could be an argument for drag reduction, similar to aeroshell DH helmets and stuff. The exposed wheels and truck hangars should generate a fair amount of turbulence and wake, and likewise with your foot since it’s often at an angle. They’re likely small gains, but any gain is a gain

Esk8 aero is already great, it’s human aero that sucks,

Just don’t be a fatass.

Getting down into a tuck will have orders of magnitude more effect than anything you do to the board, it’s well known that an upright cyclist has a CDA about twice that of one in a tuck, so skateboarders are probably similar. Heck, just turning your torso sideways probably saves ten times as much as the drag from your board.

Keep eating cookies, but get stronk muscles to hold a tuck :muscle:

This is so true once you hit 30mph+

If you’re not tucking while going fast, a little gust of wind can really throw you off.

That’s correct, but my point was more to once the human part gets optimized, are there still gains to be made on the board, or is it still too minor in difference compared to the drag of a fully tucked and aeroshelled rider. Even in a tuck the legs and feet aren’t particularly aerodynamic, so I was thinking if that gets improved will there even be a noticeable difference.

Hmm, some very back-of-napkin math indicates that a board with 8x2 tires should have a CDA on the order of 0.05 m2 or 0.5ft2. Wheel pants and aero hangers and a tail cone might reduce that by, IDK, a factor of three or four? (wild ass guess)
So once you max out the human component, if you have a big board, fairing it could net you an extra 10% drag reduction. I just think you’ll need to go really far with the human stuff before the effort to results ratio starts becoming better for work on the board.

Just found this. Why the hell haven’t we done this yet. @Flyboy I will donate all the parts if you try to tackle this.

I’m just imagining Rocinante following me around a supermarket right now and I need it…where are my googly eyes at?
