I can’t say for sure that ALL battle hardened motors have it covered but I know it is on some of them at least.

Due to precisely this comment, I decided to just coat the entire top of my enclosure in butyl tape, overlapping at the gaps. I have more butyl tape so my plan is to just cut it off and replace it whenever I need to do mods/upgrades/repairs.

This basically solves the entire issue of water ingress. The top of the butyl has definitely been wet after a rainy ride, but the inside of the enclosure is bone dry. I could dump a pool on this enclosure and it would be fine (still need to get a waterproof switch and charge port)

Ok maybe not all costs. Wanna maintain repairability.

So here’s my alternative to butyl tape (I bought it but it’s like chewing gum so I didn’t use it).
I want something easy to separate to open and won’t squish out of shape like butyl, but still makes a pretty good seal (not a b264-level seal I’m not crazy :slight_smile: )

Get stick-on foam weather stripping with one-cm square cross-section.

One cm tall? That’s crazy right?

What you do it use long screws to squinch it down to half-height.
Then one-by-one you take out the long screws and replace them with regular screws to squinch it down the rest of the way. It will squish down to 1 or 2 mm.
The result is the foam is very tightly squished between enclosure and deck and fills all the gaps.
Takes longer to screw down of course - you have to go around four or five times to get it all the way down without stressing anything, plus using two sets of screws, but I just use a drill-driver with the clutch set to a weak setting that can’t strip anything - only takes a couple minutes.

edit: measured the foam I used it’s actually 12mm wide by 8mm tall - not really square.

gotta say, after personally using butyl tape and rubber sheet that sounds much more difficult. once the board is built and the butyl tape is down there is very little reason to remove it, and when I need to I just slice it and patch the slice with more butyl tape. it sticks to itself amazingly and is thin enough that another layer doesn’t cause an issue. after it squishes out just go around the edge of your enclosure with a knife to remove excess.

Butyl tape works but it’s a damn mess and I hate it. And it smells weird.
Personally, I prefer just rubber on rubber. I use e6000 industrial glue to put a sheet of 3mm rubber on the deck where the enclosure sits, then another that I put entirely over the enclosure, and cut out the middle. Then squeeze that down from 6mm of gasket to 4.

Oh, and that scrap I cut out of the middle generally can be used as padding on the bottom of the sled.

I wouldn’t cut the center out personally. Leaving a “lid” on the top can help keep any ingress out and not rely on a seal to the wooden deck.

It’s a situational call on that one, imo. It definitely has benefit, but it doesn’t always work out to do so.
And I can’t use my good adhesive unless the board is fully tested, or I can’t access it’s guts very easily. I don’t like blindly cutting through rubber with wiring underneath.

Those are a couple of the reasons I prefer butyl tape, it solves all those problems :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

if you built the board and you know where the wiring is, and you’ve used zap straps appropriately to secure it all, then you should know exactly where to slice

We all have our own techniques for easily accomplishable things like waterproofing.
There’s 10 routes, pick the one that doesn’t give you a headache, that’s what I says

exactly, just pump your enclosure completely full of RTV silicone.

I have also done that. Butyl tape is king IMHO

I agree; it does the job quite well, I’m just not particularly fond of it.

In the interest of the at all costs, what if you just straight up dipped the entire deck and enclosure in resin? O.e
