VESC-Tool 2.04: FW 5 >> A BIG STEP FORWARD

Does anyone (other than your team riders) actually use profiles? I mean no offense, I am genuinely curious. Anyone who uses them, please chime in. Personally I dont want to set up a whole new profile just to tweak one setting, one time, and then leave it alone forver. I dont use speed modes, i dont feel the need to limit down (other than with my thumb, on the throttle). So I set up my VESCs once, and occasionally pop into the app to change a setting.

I get that Ben designed a workflow for adjusting settings across multiple VESCs, and im just complaining. So maybe a middle ground could be putting the “can forward” checkbox on every page (or the bottom bar with “read” and “write”) so I dont have to scroll all the way back over to the start page when i want to change settings for both VESCs.

I use them a lot, but I can understand you and I also wish to have that CAN button static on the lower edge of the screen. Best UX would be an icon for each VESC, high lightened when connected. You could jump from one VESC to the other.

Different strokes for different blokes, no problems with that. @Deodand do you think it would be possible to stick the “can forward” checkbox in the bottom bar of the app? I seem to recall mentions of an app/tool revision coming up, but maybe im misremembering (i do a lot of that).

Ooh yes i like this.

I think it’s definitely worth exploring a more convenient way to handle it since multiple ESCs is a reality in most peoples setups. The new little box we added to the bottom left of the full tool has felt much more convenient for me to use so maybe translate that into app form.

The motor wizards do everything you need to set everything up nicely. But yes when you need to dig in and tweak some other advanced setting it can be painful.

The app was generally built prioritizing modularity of adding and editing new settings on the fly. It’s pretty cool how it works but it does produce some weird interfaces for sure. Right now there are two tiers of setup a wizard where you touch almost no settings and then the full blown settings which throws every possible option at you. I think there is probably room for something between where a more limited and relevant number of settings are presented. That is pretty much what I did with the unity app which felt nice until one of the settings you needed wasn’t in the UI. It was also a lot more work to code each individual setting etc. but worth doing.

This isn’t the most intuitive for people coming from a dual esc if I’m just giving honest feedback.

The double drop down headers are also very confusing/annoying to navigate. Especially when they’re titled the same.

After you run the motor wizard do you need to run these detections again or is that part of the motor wizard? If not, I imagine you need to do them each individually by select sides of the dual esc.

It is designed to only run the Wizard and that is about it. The Duty Cycle CurrentLlimits have not yet been added to the Wizard, due to being a new feature. So you need to manually set the value for both ESCs

Ugh these definitely took some getting used to. You mentioned that you dont use the desktop Tool. It seems clear to me that the app was designed to be as similar to the desktop Tool as possible. So the way that everything’s sorted, and also the behavior of the wizards vs can forwarding etc. Makes more sense on the desktop tool for sure.

Thank you for the quick feedback

It is also a matter of effort. You don’t want to update two software environemnts, App and desktop version, each time there is a change. It is impressive as it is, considering that there is not an armada of coders behind it.

For sure. And now that I understand how everything is sorted, I like that the app and the Tool function in essentially the same way. I just think its a bit confusing to folks who dont go back and forth between the two very often.

I think we can maybe just add an intermediate level of UI that presents the really useful settings intuitively perhaps. and then keep the page where you could still access any and all settings. Like a tuning page.

In most cases you don’t even need to go deeper into the App. Most of the time everything works after finishing the Wizards. And once set up, you can backup your config.

I’m up for that, but the picture is wider than that. It’s sketched up but needs TIME.

Hah i was just coming to say maybe a master advanced mode that restricts. I really like the profiles and backup of configuration. The unity lost its configuration settings a few times and it was a 10 minute ordeal of resetting everything. This is fantastic.

I haven’t gotten to play with making a demo profile for curious new riders but the ability to quickly.

The motor current scaling makes sense. 50% would be half the motor amps, half the accel and half the braking.

Does the speed limit scale along with the throttle curve set for that profile or is it a hard cutoff?

Soft cutoff via DUTY CYCLE CURRENT LIMITS.

You can switch the profiles while you ride BTW. Just make sure to not activate a Profile with a lot more power or speed, since the change will be instant.

I would love to have the Desktop version on Mobile. I know we have it but its not scalable.

So being able to pinch to zoom in the Android desktop variant.

It would feel much less polished, but in a lot of ways i think it would be less confusing for folks coming from the desktop tool.

A little tutorial for you:

Perfect.

I just made a test profile with speed limited to 35 kmh and 50% accel 50% brake. I noticed that on the bench it spikes past the limit and then slows down. I will test this on the road to see if it acts the same.

Bench tests say nothing. You need to ride the thing.
