The battery builders club

I got my 0.1mm copper from here.

I just cap the copper with nickel plated steel.

I’ve no experience with nickel plated copper welding, or the premade copper busses.

Did he say he had anything to do with Ampace? Or that he was dealing with them directly? That would be preposterous.

Or were you just speaking casually about the supplier for the Ampace cells you bought?

Austin from 18650-21700

Austin IS 18650-21700.
Always interesting to see a single-person operation refer to factory process, int’l and local logistics, etc. It makes backlogs easily understandable though. :smirk:

Needing to update QC across his entire “international enterprise” is not a good sign but I guess growing its typical pains and inexperience?

It will be interesting to eventually find out what cells he’s wrapping for his AM04’s.

I’m betting it will be a pretty good cell though. Unknown cycle, life but I haven’t seen any yet that drop the ball in that department.

The rumors…RUMORS…are that the available pile of JP40’s was a lower grade (which is why it was available) so Austin was probably quickly looking for a replacement he could get reliably.

If he would stop trying to be something he”s not and just sell the damn things he’d stop having such a terrible rep. He works so hard at appearing untrustworthy. :joy:

Looks like I’ll be canceling my order.

Interesting!
He”s actually saying it’s identical to a JP40? Roughly functionally I guess, not visually since that would make it a JP40 then…which it’s not.

Wait…”small production improvements”?
Am I tripping or is that something you would say when it’s the same cell?

Hard to know what he actually is saying most of the time though, so much bs being spewed out.

Supposed 35a discharge chart comparing am04

Okay so time to let things shake out before pulling the trigger on these, looks like the chart assuming everything is accurate and true, is showing the same cell.

Why get so lawyery about a rewrap/rebrand? Gives off big “nawwwww man im good vibes” for me.

If ampace can’t produce this cell reliably or they dont want their name on it it throws a lot of red flags. Hopefully not and it works out as the specs and test results look so good vs the price point. Too good to be true?

Just got off the phone with Austin. He guaranteed these are legit jp40 cells.
Supposedly going forward all of the jp40 that are imported will be wrapped as AM04 cells.
I asked why he didn’t just put a batch number on them like flashlight emitter companies do, instead of renaming the cell.
He also said he has a few people that have been testng these cells and they will be releasing their results within the next couple days.

Sounds shady as fuck. This, on top of all the other shit I’ve heard about Austin and 18650-21700, makes me even more confident that I’ll never be ordering from him.

Wait…so he is saying that the AM04’s are actually Ampace JP40 cells? Umm… I agree with @Pecos though, performs identically.

I asked if he would confirm they are the same cells from the same manufacturer, he said yes

Thanks. A couple of things I need to check now…
Need to see the bottom of the AM04 too (checking for JP40-style spiral) but I can arrange that.

It will be interesting to see if datasheets and safety certs (if not in the datasheets) for the AM0x line of cells become available. For me personally, it’s a huge red flag if not.

I can understand the occasional NDA for what cells are being wrapped but the datasheets can be copied and the certs shared via NDA. IMO this is stuff you do before the cells are created…to address concerns and convey info of interest to customers.

I ordered 4 JP40s for testing a couple months ago, and though they arrived in functional condition with good voltage, Austin sent me 4 more cells. I’m assuming they had QC issues with that batch. Anyhow, these new cells that arrived are labeled AM04. I don’t know much about them, and I don’t have much use for “tabless” cells until I get an ebike one day. They are kind of expensive, and yet to be vetted. Interesting nonetheless. I don’t think Austin is out to rip anyone off.

Any way i could get a picture of the negative in total? Havent seen a good pic of the spiral and negative space available for welding yet

Wrap coverage can vary a bit. Stay out of a central 6mm circle.

What is the safest, most responsible way to dispose of this 10s1p P42a battery?

It was submerged in saltwater for several minutes.

It reads 6.37v.
It was probably 38.5v or so upon submersion

I got it in a metal bucket, under some bricks, outside, in the shade for now.

It sat outside at scene of accident for 3 days receiving several hours of direct sunlight each day, Florida.

First things first: DO NOT CHARGE OR DISCHARGE THAT PACK AT ALL

If you’re comfortable with disassembling it, then the safest thing to do would be to tear it down to individual cells, wrap up the cells, and take them to a liion recycler.

However, pack disassembly is very dangerous. In some ways, it can be more dangerous than pack building. Particularly with the saltwater wildcard. So my recommendation is:

  • Unplug the BMS balance wires
  • Tape off the balance wires so they are fully insulated
  • Tape off the XT90 and all other connectors so they are fully insulated
  • There should be no exposed metal anywhere, even the insides of the connectors
  • Put the whole thing in a clear ziplock bag. It should still be obvious what’s inside, dont try to hide it
  • Take it to a liion recycler. Batteries do not have to be discharged to go to a recycler! Do not try to drain that battery further!
