What about connecting two very dissimilar voltage packs with a toaster between as a resistor? Or is there another handy big resistor?

Could work but why bother :joy: a million times safer to just level the voltage by discharging or charging a pack

Anything that can limit the current could work if it has the right resistance, which you would need to verify. Resistance wire (toaster, light bulb) starts off with a very low resistance and only limits the current when hot. You could essentially be connecting the packs with a short-circuit for a short time. I cannot predict what that would do, too many variables.

Best to just discharge one pack down to the other pack’s voltage or charge the lower voltage pack to whatever level is needed.

Samsung 50S also seem to be good, they’re not as high power as the best of the molicels but they’re nice all rounders. Mooch has a table of the bigger cells here

The three Ratings and Performance Tables here give you the info needed to directly compare the performance under load for any of the cells I’ve tested.

Yeah, I wouldn’t want to do that.
I’ve brought loose cells on a plane before, but they were in little 3d-printed cases to ensure they stayed isolated from each other. Also I didn’t have 24 of them…

I think the ideal solution is to break a single large pack into several smaller (<100Wh) modules that can be separately removed from the device. Then you can bring as many of those as needed in your baggage.

Hi guys, looking for advice in terms of AWG wires for balance lead. I have an existing 20S 8P Samsung 50E and am connecting all 21 balance lead in parallel to an other battery (20S 4P Samsung 50E) soo I don’t have the problem of having many BMS’s. I wanted same charging and discharging and it was the only option. What type of AWG wire should I choose do I want something a little bit thicker than normal balance lead perhaps smaller ? :thinking:. Just want to make sure am thinking about this logically. Maybe it dosn’t change anything just want some more qualified opinion than my own.

Maybe thinner balance wires are better because if they did short they would be more likely to burn up n break the short instead of dumping huge amps and possibly start a fire?

Thanks, do you know what type of AWG wire would do the job ? I don’t really know what wires are topically used in JST-XH.

I don’t know what’s standard or what’s good.

I’d say 24AWG would be a little on the thinner side. 28AWG i would say might be too fragile

This is not based on my battery cred, just my experience breaking 28AWG with road vibrations lol

Ive never heard of vibrations breaking wires if they’re multi strand. The thinner the inner strands the more flexible and there’s some thinner available. Makes sense to tack down whatever wires so they’re not repeatedly flexing if possible, but then again if the battery is meant to flex and the wires are tacked down then they’ll flex along a smaller area and a bigger angle and the inner strands are more likely to break. Maybe be sure to get silicone and not plastic sheath

Along the wire length…yea…that would take a lot.
But a soldered connection really concentrates the flexing stresses and stranded wire often breaks where it meets the solder.

I think the balance wires are the most dangerous part of the battery. So many of them and if one gets loose and shorts it can be big bad news. Maybe not but I think thinner wires are safer so they burn up before the battery does

It takes a long time 24s.

60/40 lead solder.

Does it have a flux core? This is pretty much mandatory for good solder joints.

Looks to me you might need a bigger soldering tip to have more thermal mass
