Sub $1000 racing deck/enclosure?

It’s not a conspiracy. it’s just design constraints

A lot of people want their raceboard to have the deck level perhaps 1cm or 2cm above the axle height. That limits a board’s practicality for everyday use if you have the enclosure underneath.

IMO, a great way to make a board low enough for racing, but have enough clearance for every day use, is to do a top box. See @poastoast and a few others racing bro’s with top boxes and 3 links @HAIRYMANJACK .

Yeah, agreed, as I said above.

Being able to also daily your race board is a discount on its own. Daily-able race boards are great for the sport imo.

Low boards with top boxes ftw

I used to agree. That’s how I built my board out too kind of. Great for short track, and works kinda like a regular mountainboard for everyday use.

But you are always making compromises.

I wanted to have closed gears → srb 3 link out of the question, my bn channels are already getting replaced for tito trucks and hopefully those feel much better

I wanted to have good acceleration in 2wd and not have the added weight of front motors → i realised 4wd is the way to go for front brakes, i reaallly need the front brakes for short track

race suited tires that have clearance → they are super heavy and start to fight the practicality of a mountainboard

this is how i think about it now:

trying to keep it all reasonably lightweight by sacrificing 4wd performance → still turned out too heavy and wide for how i like to ride offroad → i realised I need a separate board for offroading → i probably should have just built this out as a raceboard only board instead on the proper platform

It takes a few more steps, but if you want gear drives on 3 links, Moe will work with you to make a profile for them, similar to what the SKP magnetic 3 link has.

This.

Can you race your daily? Sure. But the chances of being competitive at the top level are diminished because of the compromises made. There is plenty of space for stock and modified style racing of course, and that’s how many will get into it, but…

I actually see non-daily boards being better for the racing side of our sport. Dedicated track boards push the envelope without having to worry about being practical for a beer run. This makes the sport progress faster and elevates it to something that people might want to watch. That brings in money, more racing events, sponsorships etc.

The expo is a huge step for American esk8 racing. Hearing from BJ, the main guy behind the expo, speak about wanting to provide a national stage for our sport was so awesome to hear. There’s some aspects I think the expo needs to work on in relation to rules etc but overall I’m so happy this is happening.

I think more boards from brands that focus on racing will do nothing but help. Give us a backfire with a binding and an aggressive drop down with a top mount. Or a onsra pushing 300 amps or something.

Edit: kinda went off topic but just stoked to see racing growing.

and i think it’s doing pretty ok! i just got skill issue

Sure, for those that can afford to enjoy esk8 and then drop thousands on another niche use case board.

That’s not how really how you entice new people to race though, esk8 racing is getting dangerously pay to win. The most raced car in the world is a Mazda Miata, not some track weapon or esoteric hypercar.

Sports benefit greatly from a way for anyone with an interest to have fun participating, not anyone with an interest AND thousands of dollars burning a hole in their pocket.

See this part.

Miata is the most raced yes. (Actually owned one, crazy fun and I can’t wait to get another)

But the top levels still need to exist and be pushed to help all aspects of racing. F1 existing helps make the Miata races happen.

I guess what I’m trying to say is let’s see more of a focus on racing from manufacturers. I called out two fairly affordable brands hoping they make track focused boards, they don’t have to be 5k. Give us more Miatas to race.

Racing the monsoon felt like a spec Miata thinking about it. It doesn’t have crazy power but it’s got awesome handling.

Super impressive dude. Absolutely ripping out there. Completely different approach to the hairpin than anyone else.

Full throttle, full brake, hook a very tight turn along the inside barrier, full out. It was distinctly different than everyone else I saw. Maybe @Swol_Moon wqs doing something similar but his line had more movement through the corner.

You could really see all that drag racing paying off in that corner.

Within the context of electrify expo there isn’t any place someone getting their first esk8 racing experience could have a good time, in stock one of the best riders out there and insanely skilled (Tucker) was nearly lapped in a 4 minute race on his board that is a very accurate representation of a board someone thinking racing could be interesting might have, if he can hardly remain on the lead lap, what do you expect a newcomer to do?

until i almsot took out @zero_ads :joy:

That was modified. In stock a hurricane came in second multiple times. We also had a very small turnout for the event overall. So let’s see when we have more riders.

Stock had a price cap of $2500 with no modifications beyond grip tape. One could argue for a lower price cap but the argument was also made for a higher cap to help USA manufacturers be able to be in more races.

Also not all races need to be for all people. I do love the community aspect of esk8con and how it’s very approachable. I also think races like AVS are awesome, but it’s no where near as approachable for a beginner. Both of these types of races should exist.

I feel like I saw this almost happen multiple times. No one was expecting you there lol.

The deck that goes on top of the load bearing carbon fiber enclosure/truck mounting area does not have to be carbon fiber. Any material that can is relatively thin and can hold a binding will work just fine.

That will work.

I am also think about a close racing gear system that will work with the 3-link trucks.
