I am playing around with the idea of a MAD short track specific deck and enclosure. I am not seeing many other options other than the Stooge SS and V5. Would you guys be interested in a full carbon fiber race-specific deck/enclosure under $1000?
Additionally, any suggestions on what features you would like to see are greatly appreciated.
Split angles and a fairly hefty drop to keep the axles near the level of the standing platform with good positive lock on your stance to help keep you in place under hard braking/acceleration would be a good place to start regardless of specific racing style you’re targeting. Beyond that, you should probably figure out what kind of racing you’re going for, are we talking tight, short course racing like indoor go cart tracks, or more long sweeping turns like AVS or a hillclimb event?
Really low to the ground. Quick access enclosure for Lipo users. Rear foot ramp. Designed to rip around a short track and pretty much not usable for everyday street use.
Take my original suggestions, keep the deck relatively short to maintain a good turning radius and the ability to get good rotation mid-corner, and then a relatively wide standing platform to allow for good leverage and control on the deck, as well as the ability to fit a decently sized battery underneath without requiring the extra depth of a double stack (which would sacrifice ground clearance, either requiring a higher standing platform or ruining the usability of the board elsewhere)
Closest thing to this is Morgan’s board with red ember. His board has the standing platform closer to the axle than the stooge SSS. Would like to see a carbon wrap version.
Aren’t you top of t-race and also have the lap record at your local indoor track on the semendeed though? They’re pretty short tracks…
I know what you mean it’s a big board but you still need a standing platform suited to your height and then length on the ends for turn clearance.
Then if it’s single stack you cant sacrifice too much deck area otherwise you can’t get a decent pack under it. Only way is to go double but to run the deck as low as you want for racing it has to really narrow down at its centre.
I see your points but I still believe a shorter wheel base would suit the shorter tracks better. The biggest point you make about battery size I agree with. It was the biggest restriction on the other short track raceboard i had. I could only fit a 12s5p in that. The power was lacking compared to my 4wd but it was so much easier to get around the T Race track. I have to really work hard to get my 4wd board around tight bends.
The Semenbone is also not designed to allow easy access to the battery. So running lipos youd really want to make a harness and BMS for charging. But obviously i still love the Semenbone orherwise I’d not have one haha. It has it’s strengths and weaknesses though and wheelbase is more suited to longer tracks IMO.
As battery cells improve with higher discharge rates then smaller packs can be made which then means smaller decks will be ok for single stack enclosures. The p45b cells are certainly a step in right direction.
How about having a single stack at the bottom, and a small case at the top? You can get the best of both worlds: enough ground clearance for standing just above the axle, and a big enough battery so power isn’t lacking. If you also run a rear binding it doesn’t get in the way.
Sure, but I still a single stack P45B is far for enough. What will probably be enough is P50B but that’s probably still an year out.
I think the Morgan Brady / David Bonde collab deck is pretty awesome for a short track racer.
You stand 1cm above the axle height. It fits a stagger stack 18650 pack at 18S9P plus just enough space for a BMS and a D100S. Engineered around the SRB 3 links. Short wheelbase.
My only gripe is 18650s are more expensive than P42A nowadays, and I would need 162 pieces of 18650s to populate that.
For short track I agree 40 inch is ideal. I had a Landyachtz Switch 40 as a platform for a shortboard track board with 3-links and loved it. I had to sell it to assist me to get to esk8con. But it was ideal for short track.
I love my v5 but with my height at 5’6” sometimes I do wonder what a tad shorter wheelbase would do for me. 42.5” on the v5 does feel long sometimes in super tight areas. (Grass is always greener lol)
Now that I’m gonna probably do a swap to hobbywing. I may look at moving the wheelbase in tighter. See if it clears deck bite.
longer standing platform gives you more room to balance against thrust. which imo is important in short track with slow turns and high exit torque. and of course standing starts.
longer deck can be setup to have the same turning radius as a shorter deck. which leads to different tradeoffs. (maybe ride height, or higher speed stability maybe not as important on short track )
some of us may just like shorter wheelbase because we come from acoustic skateboards and they feel more comfortable.
i’m not fighting for any of these points, just food for thought.
