It makes sense. International shipping rates have temporarily trippled or quadrupled for air freight. SO shipping can cost almost as much as the drive.
Damn! I wanted to get a second one as well but hesitated
Yeah the shipping costs suck. Some companies are eating the cost but I would imagine they are losing a lot of money on it. I canāt imagine shipping liion batteries international right now
Anyone know of a good 3A charger that would work with the Revel Kit? Looking for something to juice up my extended range pack a little faster during stops when doing long group rides. I canāt afford to get a second battery right now.
So, if you pick up a second charger, you should be able to wire the two chargers together to double your charging amps and speed. Of course that means carrying twice as many chargers.
But if you wanted to try that, you could wire them together with an XT connector to make the connection temporary.
If you do this, do it at your own risk. I have no idea if the BMS in the battery is rated for doubling the charging amps. The BMS would be your weak link. The Battery iteslf can handle some pretty rapid regenerative current for short periods of time ā but I believe that the regenerative current bypasses the BMS.
So doubling your charge rate for say 45 minutes, I have no Idea if your BMS would be damaged or not.
my e-sk8ter heart is broken.
meanwhile i will buy a Revell Kit instead
I donāt think this is possible.
With such a connection, does the CV/CC charging method, which is essential for charging Li-ion cells, work properly?
@Necromere
You can use the same full charge voltage 42V charger as the battery pack in the Revel kit.
For example, this is a 5 amp charger.
https://metro-board.com/e-skate-shop/ultra-fast-5a-charger-metroboardx/
The Revelās extended range pack can be charged in about 1.2 hours. However, as @pkasanda says, the BMS needs to be compatible with 5 amp charging.
So Connecting two chargers together is something that I noticed wiht the One wheels. Some company - might be two-x, is selling a y cable so that you can double your charging speed. I donāt know if there is something special about the one wheel that makes that possible.
And we both agree that the Revel Kit BMS may or may not be suitable for 2x charging.
Also, if you use a charger from a different manufacturer then it may charge to a higher voltage than the Revel Kit charger. That could translate into no room for full battery braking and great risk to the battery if you ignore the overcharge alert.
I will tag some people that I think might have a second remote, or know someone that does.
@pkasanda & @revel_flo & @spade & @SciGuy & @Bfrome
I have lost my revel remote. And revelboards donāt ship to Sweden at the moment (understandably so) contacted every lost & found but it has not been seen. Lost it on a trip months ago.
Been using my LandWheel remote which works, but I lose out on two speed modes and it seems to top out in 2nd or 3rd speedmode. I canāt go any faster than ~32 km/h on flat ground. Tired of getting passed by bicycles.
Money is not an issue, I am willing to pay full retail price of $99 (even if used) shipping should be reasonable considering it is a light piece of plastic and no big batteries.
If you have a 4wd kit or a spare remote for some reason, I would gladly pay for it, I am in Sweden but this item should be easy to ship internationally.
I noticed when taking the remote apart that it said hobbywing on the PCB. I donāt know anything about remotes but would a cheap hobbywing remote work?
I thought in similar ways, the LW remote is also a bluetooth hobbywing remote, hence why it is compatible. The problem is the lack of settings on the LW remote. I thought maybe I could mod it, so I tried to sniff out the bluetooth packets from both the kit and the remote. As expected both are hidden and encrypted though which is good for safety, not for me.
If someone knows more than me about these remotes, I am all ears. All I need is a way to unlock all speed modes, even if I had to do it from a thirdparty device. I kinda feel that is a longshot though, probably more likely to get my hands on a new revel remote.
Edit:
Your post sparked interest in me to look at how hobbywing works and different options. It does seem that hobbywing remotes are pretty much interchangable. If anyone has experience with a HW remote that has the same settings a revel remote does that I might be able to get quicker while waiting for covid to pass, let me know.
My postal code in Canada is K2A 3C3. I donāt have a spare remote but if you figure out the shipping cost from Canada to your address in sweeden, and if the shiping cost makes sense then I will order an extra remote from Flo when the Canada US border opens up. When that happens Iām going to order a few items to ogdensburg, NY so that I can drive across and pick them up. I could then ship the remote to you. Just cover the cost of the remote and shipping to sweeden. It wonāt cost me any extra to get the remote to Canada because Iāll include it in an order with other itemsā¦
So check out the shiping cost from Canada to Sweeden and let me know if it makes sense.
11.14 Canadian rubles through Canada Post with stamps. Not sure what the remote weighs but surely it canāt be over 200 grams.
If we go that route, might be worth checking what trackable express shipping costs also.
Any indication on when the border might open And would that have to ship from China, or does revelboards in USA have some items in stock?
The border probably wonāt open up for another 30 days. New york is a Corona hot spot ā not really near the border ā but the border will probably stay closed based on the worst that is happening in New York.
I suspect there is a remote inventory in California. Iāll check wiht Flo.
I also have an email in to Jason to see if he might consider using china post to send you a remote. China post is pretty cheap but its 60 days at least due to corrona backlogs.
Iāll let you know when I hear more.
I live up in NorCal, and I know that they ship from SoCal so hopefully shipping shouldnāt take too long. My only concern is that they havenāt yet shipped my order, and I was hoping to get an update about when they might do so. With all the emails Iām sure theyāve been getting, I donāt want to hassle them with another one so if possible, could you please also inquire about the status on domestic shipping?
TLDR: If you could add on your email to Flo or Jason about what the situation is on shipping domestic, thatād be much appreciated
I already sent my emails. I think it makes sense not to bug them about shipping times because no one knows these days. After a shipment is handed over to a shipper, it seems to take weeks for the first tracking email to appear, then even when it arrives in your city, it can take weeks to get from the local depot to your door.
I have an update on the motor sound issues that I had.
I wanted to re-tighten everything and removed the kit from my tarab. Turns out I had loaded 1/8" risers installed that I didnāt notice under the kit - whoops. I removed them, re-tightened all the screws and re-mounted the wheels. Wouldnāt you know it - that got rid of most of the sounds.
There were still some clanking sounds, even from the front-trucks but that turned out to be because of the orange nipple bushings. They are really soft and having no experience with these kind of bushings, I tightened them similar to my old ones which was way too loose. Tightened them and tadaa, clanking almost completely gone, only when I go over some really uneven ground I can still here something. Could probably eliminate it completely if I tighten a bit more but now itās perfect.
The board is now purrrfect. I dig the Tarab + Revelkit + Orange nipple combo a lot and have no desire to get anything else. I love this setup. Started practicing kick-steering a bit as well to but the kicktail to some use. My only complaint would be that itās very heavy. Holding this uber-long board by the front-truck with the XR battery goes into the arms fast.
(Will probably still get a second kit when they start shipping internationally again tho to replace my Exway X1 Pro)
Oh and I still want colored wheels! Considering orange caguamas now to to see how 85mm does on this setup
You can likely eliminate the extra clanking by inserting a thin piece of rubber between the baseplate and the bottom washer. I find that this metal to metal contact creates some jackhammer noises.
If you are wondering where to find a thin piece of rubber, try cutting up an old bicycle inner tube. If you donāt have one lying around the garage, you can usually get one for free by stoping into the local bicycle repair shop.
Also, yes, a single riser would create the ideal gap to produce alot of deck slapping noise.
Instead of eliminating the riser entirely, I recommend two layers of 3/16 rubber flooring cut into oversized risers and inserted between the neck of the drive and the deck. This creates a large enough gap to float the drive fare enough from the deck that your drive will never slap the deck. The dense rubber pad also absorbs a tonne of road vibration.
I do the same thing under the front trucks.
If your roads are better than what I have to put up with in Ottawa, you may not see the need for these modifications. But If you try them I suspect you will still appreciate the improved comfort.
You would need longer bolts. I buy 3 inch stainless steel machine screws in bulk and cut them to length with a dremel or hack saw. Then I round them on the belt sander.
Thanks for the feedback! Iām currently super satisfied with the setup and donāt mind the little bit of noise (for now), but Iāll consider the ideas if I feel like tinkering again. Could probably fully remove it by getting harder bushings or tightening the trucks but most of the time I am just cruising/carving anyway and for that it feels goooooood.
Just yeah. Wheels. Give me some bright colored 90mm wheels and itāll go from perfect to even more perfect. Iām just really not a fan of having them in full back.
To go a bit back to the wheel conversation ā I did a bit of homework and researched cags. Blue cags are 77A, thatās the same as the revel wheels yeah?
What would change if I go to harder 80a wheels? I read less grip but is the difference between 77A and 80A noticeable? Are 77A generally recommended? (Dig the color of those too)
Then 85mm ā Motor clearance is a very legit point. In reality the scratches I got on my battery/adapter are from tiny rocks shooting up and hitting the kit. My boostedboard is using even smaller wheels and I never once thought about drive clearance, but itās belt drive so direct drive could be more sensitive. In what circumstances would -5mm be dangerous for the motor when mostly riding in the city, on sidewalks and over⦠these things:
If I were to go down to 85mm, what should I look out for and avoid?
For 90mm / 95mm, is there nothing besides black (hyperdrive/torquewheels) and white (BOA)? Canāt find high-quality options with other colors. All stuff I see is offbrand/nobrand.
Iāve tried TB 90mm 74A, 100mm 74a and 110mm 78a
90mm 74a is my favorite but that is skewed by several things:
-
Iām a relativly heavy rider at 220 lbs including equipment. So the larger size wheels have a big efect on acceleration, range and braking.
-
The large wheels make it a bit laboursom to kick steer.
-
The pavement in my city is aweful so the softer tires are great. I might preferr the largest wheels for 4WD and single trucks, but the roads in my city are so bad that I have doubled the number of trucks. So the larger wheels no longer add value to navigating cracks, potholes and dimples.
If you switch to smaller wheels, then keep in mind your brakes and acceleration will increase and your top speed will drop. The risk to the motors from smaller wheels is difficult to speculate on. The motors are tough. You can hit them with a hammer and they donāt dent. But nothing is indestructable.
I say that the 90mm 74A are my favorite now. However, that changed over time. When I put the 110ās on, those were my favorite due to the 4WD top speed increase ā but ti took me a while to realize howmuch range I had lost. Then when I switched to 100ās those were my favorites because of stronger brakes and lighter kick steering. When I finally switched to the 90mms then they became my new goldilocks wheels.
In general, the softer urethane makes a huge difference to ride comfort and there is alot to be said for sticking with the original wheel size.
