Problem with Slick Revolution/iWonder Cloud Wheels (SERIOUS)

Kegel cores are great. IMO way way better than abec cores.

On last week,I had saw a post from the Cloudwheel club of Facebook,Rafael said that he found the wheel core crack issue ,and as the reason it made him fell off and get injured.Firstly I am here to hope he will recover soon. And also remind you guys always riding with a helmet ,and protective clothing if possible.

And back to the topic, this issue of wheel crack arouse everyoneā€™s enthusiasm, and I saw many of you guys post the reason or conditions which caused the wheel core crack and of course IWONDER Post their official respon of this event and mentioned the points of three, use bolt pulley to wheel, improper way of changing bearing and their own wheel core quality. And overall speaking of those three points,I think they all make sense they said they will take customers advice to upgrade.(To DIY rider who want a Kegel core,or stronger the core to pair with bolt pulley )

I also check mine (luckily mine were all fine) and I found some people post their wheel with the cracks ,but one of my friend Kato said there are something weird about the ā€œcrackā€ ,because some which is looks like a crack, but not caused changing bearings or using bolt pulley.

Kato owned mold factory on our street, and he had experience of building molds of plastic products, also he is also an eboard owner (I am riding eboard because of his recommending). So during these days we had did some research about the ā€œcrackā€.We had checked some wheels we both have for now,and you can see the pictures, both Ownboard wheel and MBS 100mm wheel, the same ABEC core and while take off the bearing ,there is a ā€œcrackā€ ,similar to the most of posts on Cloudwheel club to complain, but take a good look at them, a continuous straight line across the whole wheel core, did not looks like a crack happen while changing or riding.

So we are considering while the crack happen on changing or riding, firstly it will be irregular, can not be a straight line. And it will be reach to some area of core, can not be cross the whole of it.Kato said considering from the mold,it is weld line for this kind of products. The production of this injection line is related to the temperature and flow rate when the mold is poured. So they are also reasons caused some products had that weld line, but some donā€™t.And it is very common for the plastic products.

Due to this point,I hope you guys can check again for your Cloudwheel.(Specially if you bought the second hand Cloudwheel, like Rafael did)I understand that the safety is an important point for all of us,but maybe we misunderstanding the weld line to be ā€œcrackā€. So Iā€™m here to remind to all of you guys.In my experience,I use Cloudwheel with ABEC pulley (56 teeth),and riding for at least 500km,still going strong and no issues.

This is not crack! This is seam line from injection mould tool!

Agree with you ! Thatā€™s what i want to say.

Haha, appears to be just be a real fan:

Good to have as many people as possible figuring this out.

Is there a possible way to battle harden these wheels. Fill Cores with resin ect. I am worried about my wifes board, she loves the cloudies.

@BillGordon yup your in crack cityā€¦

And weld line or cast interface, it still shouldnā€™t separate there.

Time to consider the possibility that there may be not just one reason for failure. We seem to have a menu of reasons:

  • Injection temperature problem, improper plastic flow or cooling
  • Bad batch of plastic or bad plastic mixture
  • Excessive shrinkage, bearing socket to small for bearing
  • Processing imperfections/inconsistencies that result in hidden weak points
  • Use of bolt on pulley, plastic not strong enough for bolt on
  • Use of product by heavy rider
  • Use of product in cold weather, plastic not suitable for use in freezing temp
  • Marginal strength of unreinforced plastic, strong enough for Ruff stuff diameter, not for Iwonder
  • Marginal strength, only strong enough when supported by PU wheel like Ruff Stuff
  • Marginal strength, not strong enough for some off road or obstacles
  • Marginal strength and inconsistent plastic, some are just strong enough, others are not.

The units that fracture may be breaking for more than one reason and/or for different reasons.

Some pictues indicate some reasons. Others indicate other reasons. One picture of a failure does not rule out the possibilities of other failures are happening to other units.

Also, some fractures are fairly advanced on the interior of the bearring socket before they propagate into a zone that is visible without disassembly. So riders should disasemble and inspect with a bright light (or flash) and photo magnification.

The manufacturer is not doing the right thing which would be a recall. Instead, they seem to be doing thier best to sell inventory. So riders need to do the right thing for themselves and for their families.

Its a bad moment in our lifetimes to need to take a trip to the hospital for a skateboard injury.

I do get your point and agree at the push for just compensation, though this isnā€™t exactly a car where you pay thousands of dollars for a heavily insured vehicle and any modifications made is at your own risk. I do not see tyre or aftermarket rim companies doing recalls. A recall would just be unfeasible and potentially bankrupt the company which would make things even worse. But since the issue has come to light, the public can simply avoid using them at a minor inconvenience.

A lot of esk8 riders are avoiding riding right now because of this concern.

If they were my only wheels, then maybe. But I have equally good if not better options, so on the shelf they remain.

This is not the right thing. Only a handful has actually cracked and now people are mistaking a mold line for a crackā€¦

3 of my wheels have the mold Line and an actual crackā€¦ they are like 1-3 cm away from each other.

Damn thatā€™s shitty. Did you ask them to replace them yet? Iā€™m very curious if the new ones that are being sent out have the same mold lineā€¦

Iā€™m just returning them. I purchased from a seller on eBay and he accepts returns.
