Power Traverse - electric snowboard

Keep in mind it’s a snowboard, so cooling is sort of everywhere

haha, take your soldering iron and put it in the snow…even 30W of heat can do huge trouble at the wrong spot (e.g. flanks of a plastic gear). ± 30°C ambient don’t help when you are far out of the thermal equilibrium.

We have metal gear options… We can make the stators wider with more slot fill.

I asked for 1500RPM and 100Nm, let’s see what they say.

FYI Those are POM gears have a 347°F Melting point.

ATF fluid+ snow for cooling.

HFI had a bunch of noise but works better.

Still waiting for the sensors to arrive with the higher kv motors.

16kW? that’s >300A at 50V, I hope you already planned your 4AWG wires and >10mm connectors.
What kind of battery are you planning?
Not even talking about esc or bms…

Well, now half it, because before there is melting, plastics begin to lose strength, then start to flow then melt (that’s some “jet fuel can’t melt steal” kind of thing). And I guess you will still have a heating problem.
Have a look at ebike hillclimb races/setups, they are doing the same thing but on a smaller scale.

Oh boy, you re just at the start of a very long journey

We are going to spend the next 20 years pushing the limits of what we can do.

Hit that first motor @ 21s 120A. The setup is heavy, it goes uphill. ~60Nm

Now looking to get our higher kv motors running @ 16s on the $120 controller with sensors.

I think dual 5065’s with a gearbox is the lightest setup. Saves 5lb in metal + 5lb in lipo.

We will try and design a planetary version if the numbers work, should have more data soon.

Big single.

Expect multiple solutions.

It was hard to mesh dual idler gears. Took 3 days of reading to figure out the math.

You have some great talent. Did you study this at uni or are you self taught from tutorials and papers?

Thx, nope. Just a snowboarder on a mission. Reddit /engineering is your friend.

Couldn’t fit the power line :frowning:

Refactored progress.

Yesterday we redesigned the arms and finished the rotor.

Test fitting and fixing the issues…

I want more top end but think we have a winner.

Spun it up @ 40V 40A plenty of torque, 44kmh

6384 40V 40A

Sensors and gears = low end torque, traction with little throttle.

Going to try to run the 63100 84V 65A (in the aluminum prototype)

Sensors failed. (need proper shielding)

HFI seems to work on the lower turn motors.

This low turn motor is going to haul ass @ 22S

Time to test the big motor @ 16S 60V/80A 25kv

So… what are you doing this winter? I’ll still be around in socal.
