Noob question thread! 2020_Summer

If you have a soldering iron you might be able to repair the USB-C port.

Any NRF based Bluetooth module would allow you to program using the official VESC app without USB. You can even create a TCP bridge so you can use the PC program.

You should be able to use a CAN cable to set that vesc up if you have another one

I have a tutorial on my channel on how I set up the MakerX DV6, I think it should translate well. I’m going to do another Vesc setup tutorial eventually as well but idk when

I accidentally shaved off some wires on my boosted stuffs motor wires, does anyone know off hand what those 9 pin connectors are called? XD zip tied everything but those wires and the wheel ate right through one.

I think they may be called Juliet connectors? Or higo, I forget exactly which.

technically both correct, but its known commonly as juliet plug, made by higo

Nice! Thanks guys. I knew julet or higo, but google gave me different results. Prolly gonna move all my future builds to these, theyre waterproof and easy to connect once fully wired.

Okay, so quick question about batteries.
I was considering getting this one for my mountain board (which uses a single 60V motor):
https://egopowerplus.co.uk/products/batteries-chargers/ba5600t-10-amp-hour-battery
Mainly because it would allow me to drive, swap it for a full one when it is empty and charge the empty battery while driving with the full one.
However - 560Wh aren’t exactly a lot (at least compared to the battery I am getting for my street board, with 1400ish Wh), so I considered alternatives and found this:
https://egopowerplus.co.uk/products/batteries-chargers/bax1501-commercial-back-pack-battery

I would mount the plate that usually goes on your back to my board, so it would still be interchangable. It is IP56 rated, so pretty well protected and with almost 1600 Wh at 56V pretty neat in terms of capacity. Oh and I think the price isn’t bad either btw! (not compared to DIY - I am not ready for getting into that at this stage haha)

I am just wondering what the community thinks about that battery, so let please let me know =)

Don’t. Don’t do it.

Absolutely terrible value

Higo connectors are hard to source, and they are costly to buy from higo directly. I would reconsider if u just need something waterproof

I probably need one regardless, as i dont intend to mess with my boosted guts until they actually die. I decided that theyre excellent for testing decks if nothing else, and so thats what im gonna use em for. Could just repair the wires on this one thouth, honestly. I just like how reliable theyve been for me, and having one wire instead of 4.

as long as u know what u r getting into :+1:t2: higo connector isn’t what i would recommend unless u have the moq for it, but i guess one off would be fine to get u running

If they are inconvenient, im just gonna repair this one. I got the guts of my boosted mini. Esc and battery enclosures glued together. Now that ive got 1 and counting real boards, its just a deck tester//one extra board to ride with friends. Zip tie it on and call it a day to see if ya like a deck lol. I honestly dont wanna deal with 9 lil wires anyways xD

if u know exactly which connector u want, u can ask higo for a sampling batch. that’s what i did before

The Trampa Vesc6 are still fantastic and rock solid.
Xenith is great
Also heard good things about Stormcore ones.

I’d say all of the above are “premium” - Very nice, but also serious money. Worth it, but your wallet won’t thank you.

Makerx, Flipsky, and Maytech can be considered lower-tier options - Cheaper, but generally worse QC and customer support, and YMMV regarding reliability.

They’re both pretty straightforward, and there are advantages either way. I’d say don’t let fear of setup limit you to one or the other, you can do it.

Respectfully, I’d put anything from MakerX based on v6 architecture above the xenith/unity/tenka based on my own experiences with unity based controllers, makerX DV6s and mini FOC pluses. V4 based vescs are still plagued with v4 problems and generally less reliable then their v6 counterpart. However you’re absolutely right YMMV.

I agree with your sentiment and totally disagree with @MysticalDork that MakerX is on the same level as Flipsky

This is based on personal experience, their stuff has been solid and the one failure we had was promptly replaced

Xenith is the same thing as unity so I don’t really think it can be compared to Trampa vescs or even Stormcore

It’s definitely not premium, just has some nice features at an inflated price imo

Trampa and Stormcore are the only premium vescs, with MakerX DV6 just below that, and then Unity / Xenity below that

Only downside of something like a DV6 is that you don’t have a built in antispark, but I prefer loopkey when there’s room, just more reliable.

Could it be that maytech hasn’t released anything noteworthy for a while now?

Totally agree there, The V6 stuff is generally much better than the V4 stuff, just from a robustness-of-design perspective.

I should have split the list into more than “premium” and “shit-tier”, Makerx is definitely better than flipsky, you will get no argument from me here. I was just going fast and didn’t think that far into it.

Agreed, with Flipshit and Maytech down even further.
