Noob question thread! 2020_Summer

just solder the 2 switch wires on the D596 and it will be always on
latching switches are pretty terrible for esk8

perfect then i can use the momentary switch from spintend
thanks

really stupid question
i got 2 jst connectors one is for charge port and the other for bms switch
how can i check which is which?

@tipsy

not sure what you mean
d596 comes with 2 switch wires sticking out of it
there is no “charge port jst” on a bms, only charge port negative goes to the bms, positive is on the battery

nah worked out its fine
little spark never hurt anyone

dont stick volt meter in charge port :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

@Halbj613 Make sure you fuse your charge port

It says USA only, but I’d make an exception and send one of these to the UK if you don’t have one or can’t get one easily.

already done
dont think fuse blew though
fused at 15amps i think

I’ve heard about people doing that as well.

I’m going to see if I can fit this BMS in my enclosure, but its going to be interesting for sure

It may have been @glyphiks

Instead of doing that, maybe just use some balancers instead of a BMS?

They could even be built into the battery itself, they are very small.

I’ve been using a balancer like one of those (not those exactly) on a pack for a few cycles now. working really well so far.

I have plans to try them, but AliExpress shipping is mind-numbingly slow sometimes

Do you have a link?

@YeetMeat I use a balance charger, which is basically a charger with its own bms.

@BenjaminF has taken the external bms approach as well.

My advice would be not to use the GX series connectors, and find something that uses the female side as the panel mount instead. Its too easy to short the pins when the male side is connected to battery.

I got a bunch of them for balancing a variety of S lipo packs, but also a few 10-12S ones that I’ve been using on esk8 packs.

Ohh that’s an active balancer. I meant a passive balancer. But yeah, that’s an idea too.

Aw shit, what’s the difference? lol

Bleed vs transfer?

Yes, bleed versus transfer

Dammit, I just committed to trying to fit the BMS I have coming in, into my enclosure. I will find a way to utilize the heatsink for sure.

If only there were an “anti lipo” fire capsule i could put in there.

there are charging bags meant for lipos. just in case they catch fire.
if you have room in the enclosure I don’t see why you couldn’t use it
also look for them in the r/c and drone industry. that is where they are most commonly used.

That’s called “good design”, and the idea is to not let things get to the fire stage. Or even close.
