An interesting video from Louis Rossmann, testing inexpensive China fuses available on Amazon…it did not go well: https://youtu.be/B90_SNNbcoU?si=ecLqlNAYLc0p6wFx
One brand might have properly behaving fuses but the others are downright dangerous.
Please buy name brand fuses (Littelfuse, Eaton, etc.), those which have a datasheet. No datasheet? Forget it, don’t buy them.
Here’s a datasheet for Littelfuse 32V blade fuses: https://m.littelfuse.com/~/media/automotive/datasheets/fuses/passenger-car-and-commercial-vehicle/blade-fuses/littelfuse_atof_datasheet.pdf
These are too low in voltage for esk8 use but match the ratings for the fuses in the video.
Things to note….
- Use the time/current curves (“I2T” curves) to see how long it will take the fuse to blow at different current levels.
- No fuse blows at its current rating (at room temp) for a verrrrrrry long time.
- Name brand fuses will blow much sooner than the junk in the video.
- Fuses used in higher ambient temps might need their current rating lowered. The datasheet will have a table for that.
- Using a fuse with a voltage rating that’s lower than the voltage of your pack could result in the fuse arcing over when it blows. This can cause it to burst and start a fire.
