Newbee helical 4GS gear drive!

For me it was my left side. It was like 80% locked up. Pulled the motor pulley out with motor and gave both a spin then put it back in and it was the same as the other side.

One thing that’s nice is that these are compact enough that they fit within the diameter of a 9" tire. No issues standing the board right up when I’m manoevering it around in elevators and other tight spaces!

I pulled out the problematic side multiple times but couldn’t solve it. It is definitely something to do with the motor pulley as the freeroll on both sides without the motors mounted is the same. One thing I found was that if the screws holding the motor mount plate to the drive are too tight, it was worse so I initially tried to loosen those as much as I could, to the point where on the initial test ride one of the screws started coming out. However with riding I only noticed it on slow takeoffs. Once rolling it seemed to be fine.

@bboybowzer @2xbass
Is it like finality tight or is it worse?

Yeah I found I had to screw them in a diamond as I was inserting the pulley.

So does it move freely if you swing the can in a circle ?

@ixf I have no experience with Finality so I can’t speak to that.

I’ll try remounting the motor again tomorrow and experiment with the tightening pattern. Everything moves freely and once the board is moving it seems fine and as far as I can see, there is no misalignment or anything rubbing and it all sounds good except that it is so eerily quiet! I checked the motor gears and secondary gears after my short test run and all looks good.

I just had an exchange with Ethan and sent him a bunch of videos and he’s going to mull it over and I’ll check in with him in the morning before I go for a long ride. If it’s the case that it will loosen up after some time I’m OK with that but it just seemed weird that both sides would be so different.

Although I know they’ve done a decent amount of testing, I knew going into this that I’d be an early adopter so I’m willing to deal with a few teething problems (no pun intended).

Oh btw which kit did you go with? I’m on the 5.0 ratio

Yeah I’m on 5.0 too. So I ended up remounting the motor plate and that helped things a fair bit. It’s much freeer now although not as good as the left side but we’ll see if that improves after a ride which I’m just about to do. What I definitely found is that the tightness of the screws that attach the plate to the motor, and then the screws that attach that to the drive will make a big difference.

These look really good.
I really liked what I saw on Pavel’s video.

So who all has them running on Matrix II?

@Ean.esk8 is there an adapter for 3D seevisas matrix type trucks?

Also I assume one Matrix III come out you will have an adapter for those?

If you install it properly you should not have tightness issues

However, it is worth mentioning that the motor plate tolerance to the hole in the back of the mounting plate is very tight, I could definitely see having trouble mounting it if it’s slightly misaligned or not seated all the way.

Also, the motor plates are not symmetrical, but it’s impossible to get wrong because if you have it the wrong way, it won’t mount at all

You have the newer ones don’t you? Or the 22x22 ones?

I’m running on Matrix IIs. At first when I got the kit I thought I got the sent the wrong clamps but they definitely fit.

Well I did about 40 km on them today and I just love 'em. This is my first gear drive and I can’t say for sure if they are the ones for me but I could never see myself going back to belts after this. I’m probably going to try the Apex Jump Drive on another board I’m planning.

I’m currently getting a tiny bit higher consumption (less than 1 Wh/km) than my normal but hard to say until I ride a lot more riding on them. Certainly the immediacy of the power and the smoothness of the delivery on acceleration and braking makes it almost a whole new board for me.

Newer ones.
Will add dims here in a few

Nice dude.

So once you got them installed you are feeling pretty good about how they fit with the axles.

I kinda worry about trying to put gears on mine because of the imperfections…
But I can see myself getting over that…

The wheel adapter system seems really clever to me.

I think there 20x20 now

It is - in some ways. It’s more annoying than Boardnamics tho because you have to have a set of wheel plates per wheel set that you put on, since they’re bolted on using the wheel bolts. For someone that uses 3 sets of wheels, it can be quite cumbersome to change wheels.

Hopefully they will make additional sets of adapters available, because I really love the concept.

That is a good point.
But you dude, may change wheels a bit more often than us regular folks

Nah you just don’t have enough extra hubs

Maybe, but I feel like it wouldn’t be that uncommon - Street Wheels (8 inch Kenda), Minor offroad wheels (8 inch mbs), and Serious offroad wheels (9 inch L-faster)
