My Esk8s. A journal of sorts

different idlers for the Flux.

for unscientific reasons I feel better if I am running bearings for idlers instead of the one bearing and plastic wheel set up.

so here are a couple possible approaches for the Ideatb trucks.

m6 thread so should also work for BN.

you can use regular skate bearings and an 8mm shoulder bolt. you can get super low profile ones…
these have a 4mm head…
and they are pricey. but the bearing part is easy.

or you can get odd sized bearings 6x22 and just use M6 bolts.

ok.
the weekend before I got the Demonseed back together.

what is the same.
Deck. Demonseed 42.
Enclosure. Psychotiller Altar wedge. (fresh coat of bed liner)
Battery is a 12s4p 40t on the Duck Batteries PCB with LTT smart BMS.
Unity. back to 23.64 on this one. no power button still.
TB 110s 72a.
3d servisas 44 tooth/15tooth.
TB 218 hanger in the front. BN220 in the back.

what is new.
BN adjustable baseolates.
adding that 16mm of height…
I kind of feel a little sad about giving up on the super low low ride.
but it was just silly as the enclorure could scrape on light road bumps.
so up high I go…
running 40/50

Flipsky 6374 190kv BH motors. these were on the Llama for a minute and have low miles they did get beat up. but run fine.
I have stripped one of the 4 mounting holes on each of the motors. so that is super fucking annoying.

BN XL mounts.
I love the beefyness of the construction.
I don’t love the look on the Demonseed.
the angle is not great… sticks out too much.
I wish I had longer belts so the motor would be further back…
yada yada yada…
im going to get the New BM Mounts to put on here when I can buy them here soon.

new mini remote… nothing new here…

I took it out in the neighborhood at night for a mayden voyage and it felt great.

so I decided to leave the neighborhood.
and a couple blocks out one of the motors slipped… annoying.
went home. tightened.
went back out.

felt great.

ended up doing 20 miles.

motors felt great. remote felt great.

something unexpected happen.
going to the adjustable baseplates which is about the same as top mounting I can now get wheel bite.

not on normal riding and carving.
but on a switchback turn slowly yes.

I did not seem to notice this dropped through…

I guess the turning is more pronounced since I’m up higher…

turning felt pretty good.

digging the board.

today was a good esk8 day.

giphy

I’m on vacation.

today I took my first real morning ride.
like wake up early and go ride first thing.
it was around 7:30 and it was nice and cool out.
did a 25 miler on the flux.

then a little bit later in the morning I took a stroll on the Haero and then managed to do the Fakie kickturn thing for the D.I.R.T. game.
1628786121_2

Haero is having sensor issues so I need to check my shitty soldering… but whatever. all good.

Then it was blazing hot so I got to build and did work on the Klaus.

so.
Bunch of work on the Klaus.

I had put the drive together a while back.
my hang up is that I wanted to clean the battery up a little bit.

this was the first pack I built.
a 12s3p 30q with LTT BMS.
the balance wires werent taped down really well.
so I retaped and also taped the pack to a sheet of abs to keep everything more still…

space is pretty tight on the belly so I mounting the unity on top of the battery.

then I taped it up.

then I shrink wrapped it.

then I did the temporary swrink wrap enclosure thing again.

ok.

so somehow from testing it on the bench to the wrapping it all something got fucked up…
motors were spinning in the wrong direction major stuttering.
all kinds of crazy…

I swear it seemed fine on the bench.
I run detection and seems fine but then the motors act weird.

I flash the vesc tool.
rub detection. that looks fine.

and still the same issue.

I flash 23.64 back just for shits and grins…
and same thing.

so I start cutting shrink to open it up and unwrap my tight little package…

and get this.
in the process of taping the unity and wires down

I FUCKING PLUGGED THE SENSOR WIRES I THE WRONG FUCKING SIDE…

I mean. what a dip shit

anyways fixed now.all good…

ran out or the heat shrink so just some gorilla tape should do…

until I can get a enclosure printed for this one.

it stormed here, so I could not take it outside.
I did go back and forth in my garage and it can move me.

so stoked to actually try it out tomorrow.

okey dokey.
took the Claus on its mayden voyage this morning

Sehr gut!!!

did close to 12 miles.
it ran well.
only went back home at first to change a bushing.

the tiny motors are able to move me.
and they are able to stop me.

they did get really hot to the touch…
I don’t know when that becomes a real issue…

I set the Unity at 45 and -45 motor amps.
Flipsky has 35 max on their website.
when I ran detection last night using the vesc tool it suggested 33 amps…

so hopefully 45 amps is ok…

this is not the fastest or most powerful set up.
but I was not mad at it.

I wasn’t rocketing up hills like most other set ups.
but it pushed me along quite well on flat.

the turning felt pretty good.

the short wheel base is fun for csrving.
but definitely makes me not want to really go super fast.

the super flat deck did not seem to be an issue for just riding…
I didnt try any tricks besides going off curbs and manuals.
I think the flat deck may make it extra hard to Ollie.

Love the old skool looks :sunglasses:
How does it compare to the omakase?

thanks dude.
I’m pretty stoked on the 80s vibe on this one.
and the turquoise with the orange.

it really is a different beast compared to the Omakase.

Even though I only have 10s on the Omakase it is a rocket.
the dual 6354s pack a good punch.

and the Omakase can handle the speed.
it I can still be nimble and maneuverable.
but in comparison to this it is really big.

huge difference in wheel base.

this backfire ESC enclosure is pretty nice…
long ways from the old wowgo aluminum one I have around here somewhere…

looks like it would be pretty water resistant.

and I’m stoked because looks like I can fit a unity I there…
that was a 40 dollar gamble that went the right way…

All their enclosures seem to be pretty high quality, they’re making an effort to check all the boxes of a quality board which is nice to see. Cool that it fits a unity!

I still can’t believe how lucky kids are these days that they can get a board like the Zealot for 700 bucks…

So true haha it was much harder when I started in 2017, my first board was around 750, single drive with lipos

slashed the Haero open.

I really did a crappy job soldering the sensor wire extensions.
I used 20 awg which was probably not a great idea…
but in inspecting the problematic side I was able to break the wire on the solder easy on three of the little wires…

why do they use such tiny wires anyway…

so I gotta redo the sensors and the cable sheathing…

yada yada yada…

I was just talking about this yesterday. One of my sensors went out on the space invader the other day so I just turned it to sensorless and haven’t been bothered enough to go back. Time to check out HFI I guess.

I really wish you could tune HFI from the app…

hooking up a computer is a major inconvenience for me…

I think for a mainly road board HFI would be totally good…

for real AT when the sensors work it is so good…

and we are asking for trouble with out extended wires right…

I have not had issues on the sensors with the Tow Truck… but I guess I don’t ride it a ton.

True that. I can’t imagine trying to forward/reverse without them.

took the Demonseed to drop off my mother in laws car at the shop.

took the long way home making it about 10 miles.
somewhere around 9 miles the motor slipped…

limped home on one belt…

so out of commission the Demonseed goes…

oh well…

I quess I need to retap these motors…
which will be a new adventure for me.

I can also steal the TB 6374 motors I have on the Rayne Crush.

I want to take that deck down to 184 from 220s.

just annoyed to take the Demonseed apart with having used butyl tape…

but I am now also pondering what the Demonseed would be like with 270s and rear facing m1 gears…
for which I would want BN 6380 170kv motors…

you know. because more parts is always the answer.

took the Claus out for it’s second ride.

this time a night ride and I actually ended up doing 14.5 miles…

It was a pretty fun cruise through downtown and campus.

I haven’t been getting out on enough night rides…

the Claus ran really well.

I think I can go ahead and say these tiny motors are actually viable.

there are some curbed expectations and they don’t rocket me up hills or off the line… but they do move me!

and stop me!!!

I did notice the flat concave more this time, and I have to pay closer attention to my front foot as it can just dance around…

I might even consider some concave pad things…

the narrow trucks and short wheelbase make it for a fun ride. so easy to whip it side to side.

it is nice that there is plenty of room for my feet… so it ends up being pretty comfortable.

You give me hope for my tiny build!

How’s it on that cobblestone and the sidewalks?

well dude.
you feel it.
Kegels are magical.
the blue ones especially but I am also thrilled with the orange ones. and they are cushy.

but you feel it all.

but that is kind of the vibe I go for on the kicktails…
I want it to be a throwback to childhood bombing sidewalks on big 80s boards.

I pop over most cracks with the kicktail, so there is that.

if you want small wheels and cushy I thing 85mm blue Caguamas are it!
