I mean it was pretty close to 4:20…
Much riding went down yesterday.
The V1 was the star of the show.
First I had to run an errand downtown.
I have this thing super loose…
The V1 has such good free roll.
I like to play gravity games with it, and see how far I can go without using the throttle or the brakes!!!
Not pictured was a trip back downtown on the EUC because I forgot the second half of my errand.
Then we had the usual school pickup on the Gravel Flux.
A bit later it was Judo class time. And I roll around the parking lot.
At the end of the lot there is are some trails…
And I decided to take them on with the V1…
I think this is definitely the most “All Terrain” I have done on a longboard…
Eventually I found my way to a lovely paved trail to enjoy some more gravity riding.
Really good times!!!
I’m glad I watched this entire video. 10 out of 10, did not disappoint.
I took Jeremy @Soflo down that little trail.
When we got to the end part that is more of a hill he just disappeared down it on his Onewheel…
He flew down that so fast!!!
Today has been kinda of a lazy day…
I should be out riding right now.
But I’m chilling on the front yard.
There was no lunch break ride…
School pickup was a little different because I did not have to get Max.
Naia rode along with me, and I rode the Pint and carried the Dinghy to ride back.
I feel so lucky I get to do some kind of ride everyday for school pickup up!!!
This is really living the dream!!!
After work I needed to get the car from the mechanic and I rode the Flux over there.
It is always such a delight!!!
Dualitys and CST 200x50s is my current favorite vibe!!!
I even started sprinkling in some tinkering…
The Almost a Flux needs some things done.
I have really enjoyed running chains, and would totally recommend Fackos Iso 06B system to anyone wanting a reliable driver train with flexibility and great power transfer.
However, for whatever reason on this most recent iteration, I became really annoyed with the noise of the chains…
I’m weird about noise.
I would love to put some Newbee drives on here.
Or maybe even the Linnpower ones.
But that is a bunch of money.
So I’m going to try running belts.
Belts are cool.
I’m going to use an idler.
Let’s see how an off road board with belts does for me!!!
I have both 68 tooth and 72 tooth pulleys.
So I had to ponder gearing a little bit.
Even with the 72 tooth I’ll have a lot more clearance than I do with the chains.
The chain drives to hit most times when I try to go up a curb!!!
I decided I’m going to go with 15/72
14/68 would also be okay but more teeth is better on the motor side so…
And I think I can figure out the spacing for 72 tooth pulley better.
This is really similar gearing that I have on the Flux, and I think it’s generally a good mix of power and speed!!!
Next up I need to both the wheels and pulleys together.
And then figure out if I’m going to have to move the motor mounts…
I think most like I’m going to have to.
I’m sad to see another chain drive down, for some reason they’ll always be #1 in my book but hopefully the belts work out for you. They mostly just suck in the mud but you have plenty of boards in your quiver so shouldn’t be an issue.
I don’t get into a lot of mud.
I do like to ride these boards in the snow though…
So I may very well have to slap on chains back for winter.
I was sitting in the front yard being lazy, with every intention of continuing to be Lazy…
But Luca came out and demanded to go on a ride.
It’s a good thing to have him pushing me when I am not super feeling it…
So off we went…
We we’re just going to ride around the neighborhood…
Earlier he had asked to go to the bike jumps…
So we headed that way.
It was a short lived time there.
He was not feeling loose and sending it like when we go there with the EUC kids.
One thing is for sure.
His bike has great torque and control going up hills now with the bigger sensored motors.
I’ve been thinking about experimenting with HTD-8M belts lately. HTD-5M belts of normal esk8 width (15mm) have proven to be insufficient for my fat ass many times over. But I still sometimes miss the smooth quiet nature of a well tuned belt drive.
Plus I bet you could get away with a much narrower 8M belt. 10mm or maybe even less. And the narrower it is, the less chance you have of getting shit caught in it, which could be better for off-road.
The only issue is finding/making pulleys for them.
Would the plan be to keep approximately the same diameter pulleys with fewer teeth, or move to larger pulleys? Both have potential downsides in my mind.
I think I’d almost certainly have to do larger pulleys, because the motor pulley would need to be larger in order to have a decent bend radius and sufficient teeth-in-mesh.
Yeah, that makes sense, but then that means a larger wheel pulley if you want the same gearing, which means less clearance between the pulley and the ground. I don’t have any experience with belts and offroading TBH, but that seems undesirable to me. I guess the extent of how bad it would be depends on the exact setup.
I’ve seen equations and charts for how much power can be reliably transmitted between gears based on a number of factors before, but I can’t seem to find something like that for belts. The right way to do things would probably be to decide the gearing and the largest acceptable wheel pulley, and then work from there to figure out the optimal belt for the power level and required motor pulley size.
It’s a bit complicated since I’m going from chains to belts.
I was at 44/9 on chains 4.88
I could choose 14/68 for 4.85
This is the smaller black pulley.
I am going with 15/73 for 4.8
For a couple reasons.
A really good one is that 15 will skip less than 14… Ideally…
It’s not a huge difference between the silver 72 pulley and 68 black one. In outer diameter…
To maximize clearance I would use the black one.
But other stuff is more important.
The silver pulley is going to be easier for me to space away from the tire.
Either way the belt pulleys are way smaller than the chain sprocket… So I am winning in clearance.
This is such an interesting perspective on smaller belts!!!
I would have never thought of the catching less crap situation…
But no…
I actually pondered 20mm belts.
I think that would be awesome!!!
But it would require buying parts…
happy Friday the 13th.
Rained all day…
Weird day when there is no riding and no tinkering…
It was a lovely weekend.
No tinkering… But some riding.
Saturday there was a little contest at the skatepark, so I went with Luca.
The contestended not too long after we got there so we rode around
Luca is has totally conquered going down the banks on analog!!!
After the park we stopped by the skate shop and I did a little board slide on the parking block!!!
For Father’s Day I got to do one of my favorite things!!!
Jump on the Flux and go across town.
I probably rode about 20 miles all together.
Stopped at nice spots to stretch.
Stopped downtown for a cappuccino!!!
Rode on the roads and trails.
I love the Flux!!!
Monday Monday Monday.
I had to take the van to the shop.
The vehicle of choice to get back home was the Demonseed.
Mostly because it’s the lightest pneumatic set up.
And it’s easy to put in the van, compared to all the other big big boards.
It’s funny to think that the giant ass 42-in Demonseed is small…
But to me it is.
Luca fell off the bike
He is fine… It was not bad.
But I believe it’s the first time he has crashed on the bike…
It was after school pickup.
We were going down to Big Hill.
He went on the sidewalk and hit a pretty good crack.
I think that caused him to wobble and he lost control and went into the grass and kind of tumbled over his bike.
He was okay, just scared, but he did ride in the trailer on the way back home…
Later on today he was back on the horse.
I fell today
Happy go skateboarding day 2025!!!
It is super hot here but this morning Luca wanted to go to the new skatepark so we went.
It was our first time skating here, and less than 10 minutes in I ate it really hard…
I was cruising around and thought that this section was going to be banks and it turned out to be stairs…
I could not Ollie the stairs…
I could not jump down in time…
I kinda tried to ride down the stairs… But the board hung up, and I fell hard on my side…
I had knee pads and my little gloves on…
My padded jacket was in the van. But I didn’t put it on since It’s a million degrees…
It would have totally helped too.
It sure has been a long time since I last got a swellbow…
Falling sucks…
My elbow hurts.
My chest hurts.
I have some whiplash.
And it’s extra annoying I could have had my jacket on, but didn’t.
And it’s extra annoying I fell because of not paying attention where I was going…
It’s not like I was trying to hard trick.
Or had some weird mechanical or electrical failure…
I just headed to the left of the rail instead of to the right and it is such a silly fuck up…
