My Esk8s. A journal of sorts

More Camping fun

This past week we went tent camping again for a couple of nights.

I stuffed 7 PEVs in the minivan.

Compared to the last camping trip I added the Gravel Flux, because I thought it would be nice to also have a mountain board around.

Bucket of chargers… And I still forgot the charger for the GT…

Delicious beer as we set up.

And shortly after setting up Luca and I went for a cruise to explore.

The Gravel Flux is a good match with his Bike and we covered a lot of ground quickly.

The 9 inch Mudpluggers got around really well on the big gravel.
The Gravel Flux was great for camping.
I would have brought the Almost a Flux if I had finished it up… But this worked out nicely.

Camping fun continued

One of the coolest things about campgrounds Is that the kids feel the sense of freedom riding around.

The GT was also a good companion.

It handled the big gravel quite well

The next morning Luca and I went exploring on the Onewheels.

When it was time to head back to the water I used the Gravel Flux to carry stuff back and forth.

I had to carry the Gravel over this water so many times. It was too deep to fiord…

It was really surprising how well it did with the big gravel

Hanging out on these Clear water Spring fed Rivers is a pretty sweet gig.

The campground had this huge slip and slide which was quite an attraction

I’m really glad I brought the gravel flux.
I think I explored a lot more because I had it and I can cover so much more ground with it.

Rolling around on the gravel banks was really surprisingly fun…

The onewheels were great companions the whole time too. (Asterisk!!!)

The Flip side of the coin

Camping was mostly great but something really bad happened…

After many hours cruising on the Onewheel, my buddy Chris rode up the gravel hill later in the night and did not make it back down…

He doesn’t have a ton of Onewheel experience but has been skateboarding his whole life…
And he was doing fine on the Onewheel even on the big gravel which is the gnarliest…

But somehow at the top of the hill when trying to turn the Onewheel took him down hard and claimed his clavicle…

Sucks…

Crack of dawn ride

I couldn’t sleep Saturday night, Sunday morning…

Kind of to my surprise, the sky started getting light just after 5am…

So I decided to go across town on the Flux.

My favorite standing platform…

Sun wasn’t even up yet…

It was such an interesting mix, it was totally peaceful and empty… Like it it late at night. But bright out

I cross over lots and lots of little bridges on these rides.

I ended up riding 19 miles and got home just before 7 am.

Hot Afternoon ride

Despite the mega banging heat Luca demanded that we go ride…

He really is all about it.

So we set off to ride to the new skatepark.

It’s really cool how he gets into the ride and just starts vibing!!!

He made the observation that my board and his bike are the same length!!!

I chilled and watched him ride around.

I was surprised how high he was going on the big quarter… And it’s his first time there on the bike.

Turns out, on the way home I had a Diy is a disease moment.

I think the battery on my ZMote is failing…
I hope that is all it is…

But I had weird signal stuff happening and had to call my wife to pick us up downtown…

Back to Belts

So…
After much lollygagging I finally got the Almost a Flux put back together with belts.

I’m out and about right now!!!

Everything seems good!!!

There was really nothing wrong with the chains.
But I’m enjoying how this sounds and feels way better.

These are ATC 72 tooth pulleys I have had for the longest time.

I’m going with 15/72

I had to break out the clamps to bolt the wheel down.
I was able to use the same bolts and half a hub spacer I had with the chains.

Figuring out the idlers was probably the biggest deal. I had to order M8 bolts…
I had the bearings.

What is remarkable about all this is I managed to switch to belts without having to move the motor mounts.

Sometimes DIY is not a disease…

The belts sound good.
I can’t get it to skip on hard breaking.

I stuck a couple extra belts in the box…
So as long as I carry a crescent wrench I can change belts on the go.

Let’s see how it goes!!!

I need to quit falling so much

I just ate it pretty hard on my way home…

Note to self:
Don’t try to bomb up gravel roads in the dark after having a whiskey…

I almost saw this one coming…

I decided to meander on my way home, and thought I would go down and up the cool gravel road next to Campus.

I rolled down it pretty mellow.

But decided to get frisky on the way back up…

I hit a washed out slot on the road at pretty good speed and it bucked me off the board.

I danced on I for a second, but lost control of my feet and started turning to the left and slammed backwards on my butt and head…

I had to drag the board out of the embankment…

I was in one piece and fine to ride home…

But let me tell you.

Falling sucks.

A lot hurts right now.

I got the whiplash…
Skinned elbow.
Rugburn on my butt and lower back.
And a good little slice on the inside of my back ankle…

I almost saw this one coming as I was rolling up the gravel road, feeling dangerous.

Gear did ok ish.

Helmet was crucial. Good work.
Padded jacket helped my shoulder, but I think my elbow missed the pad.

Pretty sure the mid tops I used to wear before plantar Fasciitis would have protected me from this one…

I did not have my butt pad on…
It would have also been helpful.

The worst right now is the whiplash…

Ouch.

Bro! We twins right now

My shoulder is still fucked.
10 days after. Might have fractured a scapula this time but I’m on vacation and no time to check.

I really need to make a thread dedicated to finding the best high top wide toe box “barefoot” skate shoe. I’ve fallen alllllll the way down the rabbit hole lately. I imagine that thread will just be me and you and @glyphiks going back and forth :joy: but could still be useful to have somewhere to compare notes.

My plantar fasciitis is pretty much gone after surgery but foot gets sore if i dont get much sleep. Wide toe shoes def help along with orthotics

I’ve been wearing a super minimalist pair of barefoot shoes (“Within” brand on Amazon, the low top mesh ones) for two years now. But they’ve just been my everyday walking around shoe. I felt that they were too thin and flimsy to be suitable foot protection for esk8 (not to mention low-top, which I long ago decided was not ok for esk8). So I’ve still been wearing Vans Sk8-hi MTE as my skate shoe.

Except recently, my feet have been hurting more and more while I skate. I figured it was just normal foot fatigue, until a couple weeks ago when I got on my board and realized that my feet were in serious pain pretty much as soon as I started riding. That’s when I realized it was because, after years of wearing a wide toe box barefoot shoe daily, my foot had returned to a more mature splayed-toe shape, and cramming them back in the narrow pointy Vans was only getting more painful.

That’s when I decided to bite the bullet and dive down the rabbit hole looking for a wide toe box high top shoe I can safely and comfortably use for skating. I decided on the Lems Boulder Grip Waterproof. It’s not perfect on paper. Doesn’t check every box. But it’s the best I could find after over a week of frantic searching lol. They will be delivered today or tomorrow.

In the mean time, I just did a 10mi skate to my workshop this morning in my Within shoes. I kept it slow and easy, conscious of the lack of foot protection if I fell, but so far so good. The board feel was awesome, being able to spread out my toes and really dig into the concave of my deck felt really natural, and I didnt have any of the foot/toe pain of my Vans.

I’m feeling very optimistic, and I really hope these Lems work out. I would hate to have to wear my Vans all day for CarveSEA in a couple weeks

It was not too long after I got my first pair of wide toe box shoes, that I could not wear my normie shoes…

It is tricky finding something with more substance…

I think I will be giving my hi top Within shoes a try again with insoles added.

I do have to say the Lems have been great for the recent time.

Bottom cover for the Almost a Flux

The other thing I got done yesterday was putting the abs sheet “bottom cover” on the Almost a Flux.

This is just to cover the wires that go through the bottom of the deck.

This is easier to do because I had the previous one to use as a template.

So I just have to stick cut and drill.

I put a ton of butyl tape where the cable is there in the back.

Then I put butyl tape all around the edge.
And say it in place to clamp and screw down.

I used some of the deck inserts on the front and back. But on the side it’s the self tapping screws.

So this board is finished again.
I do need to try the Singularity C2 shape here soon.

@Venom121212 peep out these Tegaderm patches.

I put some on my back and it’s nice to have coverage where my boxers hit.

Oh yeah man, those are the good stuff. Tattoo aftercare bandaging is the same type of stuff but way cheaper and you can cut your own size from the roll as needed

Hydrocolloid bandages are also great for road rash.

These are cheap and good in my experience. Large enough to cover most road rash. No untreated border, so if you need to overlap them to cover a larger wound it’s easy.

Big difference between the 2 being fluid absorption.

If its a wet, leaky wound go for hydrocolloid

If it needs to be moist and germ free, tegaderm/tattoo skin

Which would be best to keep in the fanny pack for rides?
