My Esk8s. A journal of sorts

Usually when i see inductance values that are high, it usually means i have a bad joint. Could be a loose bullet or bad solder joint being held with shrink, i just found a piece of heat shrink that was a little too long and it overwrapped the female bullet and covered a bit of the inside. Caused motor L inductance high values.
This was causing a bunch of motor crunch i couldn’t tune out

We went to the skatepark in the pump track yesterday.

I’m pretty stoked I finally made the jumps over the box and the pyramid with the EUC.

got a flat at speed

Thursday May 22nd was yet another perfect spring day.
Sun is shining but it’s still cool enough to feel comfortable wearing my gear.

I had to go a ways away and the Flux was the Choice.

It was the 5th grade picnic at a park in town.

I’m not very good at standing around so I rode around the park quite a bit, Even connected with the gravel trail a little bit.

I also started cruising the neighborhood directly around the park.

And I wasn’t really nice smooth paved street, probably going close to 30, when I suddenly felt the power sucked out of my board.

It was a weird slow down.
I thought the ESC had fried or something I don’t know.

But I quickly realized I had gotten a flat on my front left tire.

Thank you Esk8 Gods for a smooth slow down and not making me come off the board!!!

In the trunk we went for the ride home…

little dude feeling analog

He can ride it all!!!

His electric bike.
His Onewheel.
His electric skateboard.

And he has really been feeling the analog boards recently!!!

Last night he has to go ride after dinner.
He calls this the flat spot…
It’s the only little part of the neighborhood that still has good pavement.

Because of the natural figure 8 and the slightly different hills and inclines this used to be my main go to spot when I first started esk8…

Last night I took the Dinghy, which is quite a throwback vibe to my very first esk8 days on the tiny single drive Acton Blink!!!

The best part about riding the Dingy is that it feels so dangerous the entire time!!!
It’s so fun…

I can empty a roughly 1200Wh 21S4P P42A pack in 10 miles  That’s cruising between 35-40 for the full ride though and it’s on 4wd

That’s crazy consumption… Like double what I do on 9" tires and 1:5 gearing and punching it most of the ride.

This was a mix of that park on road, off road, and those warehouses I think we went to.

45 is about what I usually see…

The first week of Summer Break

It was an unusually cool Memorial Day weekend.

I love the fact that currently I can ride in all my gear and it’s comfortable…

And I love that the little dude is all about riding.

So Monday morning we set off to go ride around on Campus (his idea).

The Onewheel Strikes

We had just gotten into Campus and were cruising down a sidewalk and I look back and the little dude is down.

I didn’t see what happened, but he said he got the wobbles and went down…

Hitting his forehead ( we had just stopped and put his helmet over his hoodie, because he was cold)

I suspect he hit the brick wall next to him, hot the ground…

He got a pretty gnarly goose egg out of it…

Had to call mom for a pick up.
Pondered the Emergency room, which was literally around the corner.

But he was fine. And our doctor friend said “better out than in”

The kid is so tough… He was back riding the next day…

Summer Rides

Ok, let’s try the riding thing again.

Tuesday Lunch break ride to Campus.
( He wanted to take the Onewheel… But it was still in Mom’s car)

We almost always stop at the bridge to look for the Gar and the Turtles.

Later that evening we went to the skate park.

I love the Nicky Guerrero so much!!!

The little dude is moving and grooving.

The Onewheel gets around the park so much better in the Bowl Tune!!!

Looking at the Park Board, I Don’t have a whole lot of clearance before I hit the mount.
But I think I would be worth going from the 76mm Akashas, to 68mm Seismic wheels.

It would be another move towards a more regular skateboard feel.

And what does 5mm of clearance matter when you already have none…

Almost a Flux is back

I lost track of why exactly I took this board apart…

It has been down several weeks it seems.

I think it was to get to what I did yesterday…
Make it a mountain board again.

I had this with the MAD 101s and Matrix III.
And it was super fun, and I’m making a dedicated set up like that.

So you hid the skatepark from me??
Haha I glad little man is ok. He’s a tough one!
How’s the pivot treating you?

Ok.
Let’s try to get caught up.

I did finish the Almost a Flux last week.
We stopped with me adding the longer screws to the Matrix III

I also had gotten new bearings and spacers from MBS

I used half a rockstar hub for my chain sprocket spacer and had to Dremel off the center.

Getting there.

These MBS mounts are nice.
I feel good about them staying in place because the big bolts that you put a ton of torque down.
Reminds me of the XL Boardnamics mounts

Next up was the wire extensions for the new motor.

After much gorilla tape I was ready for the bottom plate, that has not been added yet …

I really love this set up.

It’s a great combination of parts.

The Matrix III with the Singularitys are so much fun to throw around.

I am not however feeling super thrilled with the chains…

I get frustrated with the noise. I want to slap a Set of 4GS on here… But I need to stop buying stuff…
So I may try belts for a while.

Bring back the belts! I miss them sometimes. They’re so much quieter than gears and chains.

4GS are super quiet, but I do love the simplicity of belts

I don’t think I’ve heard any in person to be honest.

Oh yeah. They are super quiet…

When running perfectly I think 4GS may be quieter than belts…

I still have 3 sets of 4GS Newbee drives running and it is so solid and clean…

But the chains sound so awesome! Especially next to a hillside or somewhere with a good echo. It’s OK to have one loud board right? Side note, chain wax seems to make them run a little quieter, not a huge difference but there is one. Still way louder than belts but it’s cheap enough to try out.

I do like the noise feedback and think it’s fun at times.

I just generally prefer quiet boards.

Pretty much always when I ride I listen to music on my neck hanging speakers.

So between Motor noise and wind noise I am good.

It really is part of why I love the NewBee drives so much…
They can be such a quiet ride.

And there is no noise really on free roll.

Chains have that.

It was horrible for me with the BN drives.
The noise of the BN drives also drove me crazy!!!

Then there is the SRB open gear drives…
And fuck those are so loud.
But going back to enjoying the audio feedback, I really dug the open drives.
It sounded like a fucking jet…
So cool.
But so fucking loud and intrusive.

It’s funny because I actually went to chains from the open gear drives because they are so much quieter…

I’m pretty sure currently the loudest setup is the Death Scooter!!!

I think the audio feedback is also really fun on this one. But I do ponder getting a hub motor to make it run smoothly and quietly.

Have you tried some chain lube on the scooter? I add it to my daughter’s scooter to quiet it down some.

Bring the Noise

Turns out all these things are kind of loud in their own way.

But some definitely more than others…

The early days of Esk8 Tecnho Metal sounded horrible…

Yeah.
I could probably do a new application.

I do use lube… Just probably not as often as needed.

The video on the Almost a Flux was just after applying the Chain wax which is what I seem to like to use the most.

This reminds me to oil my garage door springs…
