My Esk8s. A journal of sorts

I got on the Patton today.
I had missed it…

I have a weird hang up about riding the EUC on wet ground…

I am afraid I would slip and fall, even though I think with the street tire I have it would perform pretty well.

But either way I get sketched out by it.

But today for the first time in a while, roads were mostly dry, so mono wheeling I went.

I ended up riding 13 miles, but I was tired after 6 miles, and really tired after 9 miles…

I like riding the unicycle.
I am still glad I ended up getting it.
It’s weird, because I do feel pretty comfortable with it by now, but at the same time not 100%

Probably a ways from 100% really.

I mean, there is a level of sketchy with riding all of these things right.

But obviously I feel really comfortable on esk8.
Well, on the Flux anyway… Not so much on the Llama Link yet.

I feel pretty comfortable on the Onewheels and think it just going to get better since I Vesced the GT.

On the EUC I feel like I have more of a ways to go…
And I still can’t go much faster than 20…
I may graze 25 here and there.
And I should totally be able to cruise at 35 on the Patton.
But I just don’t get it yet…

Wet is one thing, but slick/ice is another. @whaddys tried during one of the little snows we had and turned around asap and grabbed the sit down Snowsnot.
I enjoy fucking around on them here and there, but am defensive about it cause the crew keeps trying to convert me.

This was out on a 8⁰f night heading home from a lake loop. Wearing stiff snowboard boots with the pads not adjusted to them.

Dont tell @glyphiks you saw me on one please

I didn’t leave the house those days.

And embrace the EUC .
Get your Titanic vibes going. Stretch your neck and your shoulders!!!

It won’t make you break up with esk8…

Thats the scary thing. I’ve been training to fall from a sideways stance for 30 years, and good at it I may add. Not sure I have the proper skills to fall from a forward position.
Probably would upgrade some pads if I ever do more than just mess around on them.

I have fallen a few times on trails on dirt, but I was going slow and kind of fell to the side…

I haven’t had a fall on the street despite several scary wobbles.

When that day comes it’s gonna suck.
I am sure I’ll faceplant, and not save it like a boss the way this dude did.

@rafaelinmissouri I really enjoyed seeing your 3link llama come together. Great looking build.

A few thoughts.

1 - did you grease the stooge gears? They are loud even with grease, but they are EXTREMELY loud before you grease them.

2 - are you running no circle clips on those motors??? I would get the dremel out and grind material off the mount. You probably want the circlips on the motor. That is really all that holds on the can to the stator.

3 - yeah 3 links are weird haha. In my experience it took me a little while to figure out a setup I really liked on them but now I love them. We actually ended up with pretty similar setups it looks like.

4 - can you link those extension rods you used? I had the same paranoia about little thread engagement

Ride it well buddy - cheers!

Duuuuuuuude.

Not the first and only day I went out.
Since then I put chain wax on there.
But it’s just hanging on the wall.
What grease do you like?

Yolo.
Yep.
The can doesn’t really want to go anywhere…
But yeah.
Kinda of asking for trouble.
I am fixing it with the spacers from NewBee.
I had actually taken a Dremel to the mounts on the Khymera these motors last lived in.
But that was not looking good on these SRB mounts.
So off came the circlips!!!

Here is the little Rod.

So tell me about your relationship with the bushings on your 3 links.
How do you run them?

I would recommend any NLGI-2 grease instead of chain wax. Red n tacky, super lube, even white lithium will be better. I personally use super lube on my gear drives but red n tacky is the choice of most.

I like them quite loose but I’ve also never gone past 35mph on my board. I run the same bushings as you. It’s very easy to lean the board to full lean. I add just enough preload on the bushings to add a bit of resistance but it doesn’t come anywhere close to the rebound of a normal rkp/tkp/ channel truck. There really isn’t any rebound, but the truck does carve once you’re going quick enough.

Thanks to adventures in gear drive land I actually have all of these…

It’s looking like I’m going to get some 3 links action tomorrow!!!

Right after getting back from EUC riding today I rallied the kids up for a playground hit.

And I threw 4 Vesc devices in the trunk.

I could not get the little dude to try his electric bike, but big sis helped me out and rolled around so we could try and tune it.

I think I bumped amps up to 33 and ERPM to 9000 and she was moving along ok.
At 40 amps the motor didn’t sound great…

I will need to keep on tuning it, but I think it works!!!
Peep it @monsterbuilder

Thanks to the tennis courts I got my first hit of thane for the year.

Both of these boards are so good on here.

The Rayne Crush is so plush, and the Dinghy is so super carvy and fun to throw around!!!

Sun is shinning and its 55 degrees…

Today’s lunch break ride was the return of the Llama Link.

I went out and rode 17 miles.

I did not mess with the trucks at all today, they felt pretty good, I may loosen the bushings more later to see what that may do.

I can’t deal with these gears…
The noise just kills the vibe.

My use scenario for esk8s is that I gear up, open the garage, and just go cruise around listening to music on my neck speaker.

So I do like a quiet board.
Which is one of the reasons I like the NewBee drives so much.

But I am not dropping the big bucks to put them here.

And belts are not going to be viable.

So I’m getting some chains from @Facko .

I actually jumped on the Gravel Boi right after getting home to get an immediate comparison on the noise.

And the chains are so much quieter…
And during freeroll they are almost silent.

While the bears have that constant chatter…

So yep.
They gotta go.

On a separate note jumping on the Gravel Boi after the Llama, made the Gravel Boi feel small…

@Evwan I had a break this afternoon so I decitto take a little ride on the EUC.

Just rode 7 miles.

But it was breezy out…

And wind gusts were hitting hard.

That shit sucks… So scary.
I had to go extra slow on the tops of hills and open areas…

That’s the main reason I’m selling. On windy days, most of my routes are off limits since I don’t wanna end up in a ditch. The sides of my local trails are a solid drop off.

Most days here are windy, I live in a valley.

It’s interesting that on esk8 the wind is just a minor nuisance…
May not even feel the gusts…

On Onewheel you really feel a decrease in performance with a head wind, but I don’t get knocked off balance or anything

On EUC… It’s so sketchy and I think I am going to die…

It doesn’t seem to be an issue for me here that regularly fortunately.

I am guessing @Heathlewis rides his EX30 so fast he is just always cutting through the wind…

Heath, do you get hammered with gusts on those mountain roads?

Honestly, the biggest issue with wind is while braking. That’s when I tend to go sideways. Otherwise it’s not that bad. The faster you’re going the less the wind impacts you, but the higher the stakes are if it screws you up. if that makes any sense

Why wouldn’t belts work here?

There goes the neighborhood…

Maybe.

Today I had my first sort of run in with a City Official on a trail while riding my EUC this afternoon.

This lady saw me rolling up the trail, and kinda stepped into the middle of the trail and waved me down.

I stopped, and sat down on the EUC to chat with her.

She proceeds to tell me that electric scooters are not allowed on the trails.

I had seen some blurb on Facebook by the Parks and Rec department to that effect, but could not find any actual rules…

But I expected this to happen some day.

I initially tried to be nice and said I had actually looked for rules, and could not find anything…
Which I did.

She said for years there have been lots of complaints about E-bikes and Rental scooters.

So now the only thing that is allowed is pedals assist bikes.

I did kinda start a discussion with her, and asked how come we can’t be like Arkansas, and about the people that really use trails to commute in…

She could not find the ordinance on the spot, and asked for my email which I gave her.

I was generally trying to be nice and polite, but I was also a bit defensive.

I asked about a possible forum for discussion, and she suggested I reach out to my City Council person…

I let her know how unfortunate I found the ruling to be, and limits peoples mobility, and yada yada yada.

And eventually said I was going to probably keep riding until they confiscate a few boards.

She said they will initially give a warning, but upon additional offenses you are banned.

So I may be getting banished in the future…

Even though this is a pretty progressive college town this certainly strikes me as an elitist type of approach, and I don’t expect the rules to change.

I don’t know what enforcement can look like, as there are only a couple of Park Rangers, and actual cops have too much on their plate possibly give this any priority.

So obviously I am going to keep doing what I am doing.

I do worry about signs going up, and the enablement of Karens…

I may even have a run into a Park Ranger…
It would be quite something if I in fact end up Banished…

I half expected that I may not get an email, as there May not actually be an ordinance…
But the email showed up.

It was nice meeting you today on the Grindstone Creek Trail (GCT). I appreciate you taking the time to stop and talk with me about City ordinances related to trail use. Per our discussion and at your request, the below information links to the City’s Code of Ordinances addressing the prohibited use of motor-propelled unicycles or other motor-propelled devices on City trails.

Division 9. CITY TRAILS

City Ord. Sec 17-140 - Definitions and rules of construction

City Ord. Sec. 17-141 - Trail use by cyclists; motor propelled scooters prohibited

Ord. Sec. 17-99 - Electrically-assisted pedal-powered cycle on designated trails

A full list of park and trail ordinances can be found here.

Human propulsion (pedaling or pushing) and fully operable pedals are important design features in addressing whether a device can legally be operated on the City of Columbia multi-use trails.

Please call if you’d like to discuss further (573) 441-5495.

Again, thank you for talking with me today. I appreciate your time and understanding.

Janet Godon"

I wonder if this language is clear enough to cover Esk8, Onewheels, and Electric Unicycles.

“Motor propelled scooter means any scooter, e-scooter and other small wheeled vehicle which does not rely solely on human propulsion and is equipped with an electric motor that is capable of propelling the device to a maximum speed of fifteen (15) miles per hour.”

Anyways…

Sucks.

Not the direction we want things to go right…

I’d keep riding the trails and just turn the other way the next time Karen steps in front of you in the bike path
