My Esk8s. A journal of sorts

So I got to go out and experiment with the trucks some more.

Looser.

Like @dskate said, I nee to try and let go of the concept that tighter means more stable.

I started wondering if the bushings even really matter with these… you may just be able to go super loosey goosey, and still not die.

So much going with these trucks.

When was the last time I told you I am loving this deck @artwars313

Really cool to hear your thoughts on SRB 3links. Love the install you did with the brackets on top, board looks so unique.

Looking forward to hearing more once you get better weather.

glad you got your turning radius back

Funny/sad that you say this…

Mudyi has started to not cope with the esk8 rides… he starts getting to a point where he is losing control of his back legs and stumbling around all fucked :sleepy: his esk8 days are over now sadly, that’s a big reason why i’ve been riding my push bike way more than my esk8s these days.

In my admittedly very brief time trying 3-links, I was surprised by how little dive they had going into turns versus more traditional trucks. Unsettling at first, but I can see why you’d want that for faster riding.

I feel you dude. Feels like just yesterday that my dog Maya was screaming along with me at 25-30mph no matter where I rode.

Nowadays she can only do a couple of miles before her paws start getting torn up and her hind legs start to suffer. :sob:

This is a very interesting way to put it.

You should get him a trailer.

He would hate that so much  i do want to tho

Let him run a couple miles and then lure him into the trailer.
But yeah. I can’t get my dogs to do anything.
Someone sends me that video of the Onewheeling dog at least once a week, and makes me resent my non riding dogs…

The Saga went on with the Llama, and this part doesn’t so much have to do with the trucks…

The belts had to go.

It must in part have something to do with the motors facing forward…
Maybe the large 20mm pulleys.

Or maybe it’s just that Chip n Seal sucks…

But I was not going to be able to keep belts on here
I had so many problems in such a short time.

I bet the set up Alex has with the NewBee drives is super sweet.
But that would be expensive…

I actually hit up Facko and was leaning towards putting chains on here.
They have been really solid on the Gravel Boi.

But that would around 170 bucks, and I was having a hard time nailing down the ideal pulleys combo.

So I thought I would give the open gears a try

I am not opposed to the concept of open gears, but it always seemed like the SRB ones are really loud from videos.

I already think the chains are loud…
The belt drive with the SKP motors sounded so good…

But @fessyfoo had some SRB gears for sale, so I could try them for under 100 bucks.

So here they are.

The stickers were a nice touch Fess :grinning:

It makes me happy that these use a bearing.

3D printed spacer worked out nicely.

While I was there, I changed the Evolve 7 inch tires, which I really like, but wear fast.
I am trying these CST 190x50

They are just barely bigger than the evolves, but definitely look more rounded.

I actually like the look of the board with the Evolve tires better.
But I want to see how the CST feel.

I really, really, really like the CST 200x50 I have on the Flux.

On an unprecedented note of stupidity I somehow chewed through the thread of the front axle.

I was really bummed thinking I may have ruined my shinny new trucks.

But I ran down to ace and got the little thread chaser tool and managed to get it sorted out.

Anyways.
I had nee tires, and new straight cut open steel gears.

Which are a really neat, elegant simple approach, it seems like.

Wholy fuck batman…
These things are loud!!!

Like, super fucking constantly loud.

Way way louder than BN drives, way way louder than chains.

And I fucking hate the noise.

And also I fucking love the noise!!!

I swear the board feels faster and more powerful since it sounds like a jet engine.

The audio feedback when accelerating is really neat.

So I love the noise.

I also fucking hate the noise.

So I may still go to chains.
But let me do some more miles.

I believe the open gears are pretty robust.
The motor pulleys are cheap and easy to get in different sizes.
And the power transfer is really solid.

So I want to love them. But I will have to see.

It looks amazing, though.
So industrial.
So tough.

The polar vortex hit just after I tried them one time…
So I am anxious to get out and get some more miles on them.

Ok.
Let’s take a break from Llama Link programming.

Christmas came and went.
The big thing the little dude asked for was a ride on 4 wheeler thing.

The older kids played with it a bit.

But the little dude didn’t get into it, and it was kind of underwhelming.

So I mashed it back in the box and took it back to Walmart.

We talked to the little dude, and decided to get him an electric balance bike.

He really gets down on his balance bike, and I have been wanting to get him one that is electric.
20231115_171009_1

So I ordered a 14" electric balance bike from Walmart that was on sale.

And it never worked out of the box.

The sensible thing to do would have been to take it back to Walmart, and order a replacement…
But that was going to take forever…

So I decided I would try to Vesc the little bike.

The added bonus is that it was about 1pm and he would be home at 4, and I really wanted to get the bike running, because he already knew it had gotten there.

So I soldered some adapters.

I ran motor detection, and it sounded ok. But it came up unseasoned.
But the Flipsky could in fact turn the wheel.

Figuring out how to connect the throttle was new for me.
Apparently it’s an ADC input, and I managed to figure out the right wires and plug them in to the Flipsky in a weird configuration.
But I got the motor to spin, and respond to the throttle.

I even crammed everything into a Ziploc bag for IP67 rating…

I could not quite get it running before he got home, but he was excited to see it spin on the bench.

So I managed to get it to the point of kinda working and just needed tuning.

It’s freaking really cool looking If you ask me.

love the vesc sticker on there.

The polar vortex presented an opportunity for tinkering.
And one afternoon I actually made a battery for the bike.

I had my 12 P45Bs laying around to make a battery for my new park board.
So I stole them.

It was really close in size to the 7s2p that was in there.

This was kinda fun to whip up.

Then I needed to cram it in the little enclosure.

I found yet another use for Butyl tape and used it to try to seal up the enclosure.

So what do I have here.

This is the only marking on the Motor.

I believe it’s a 24volt 250w motor.
I really wish I knew how many poles it has.

So.
24 volt motor.
12S1p 50.4 battery.
Flipsky 6.6 single ESC with a separate Anti spark switch and a Bluetooth module.
And an ADC throttle.

I could really use some tips from smarter folks on how I may be able to tune this.

My plan is to keep the motor amps as low as possible, and limit the ERPM.

I think I have it at 11 amps, and it might be too much… I think the ERPM at 3500 is actually limiting the speed.

HFI and silent HFI don’t seem to work out of the gate.
It coga some uncensored, but it moves ok with a push.
It’s going to be tricky to tune it with just feedback from the kids.

But I am really anxious to have a nicer dry day to get out and try this out.

I got Luca out on it a tiny bit.
It was off…
It’s a smidge bigger than his current balance bike, bit he will grow into it really soon.

Riding this January has been kinda slim pickings…

December I got to ride a good bit more

Winter is not what it used to be here, and I get lots of days off that are viable to get out.

It’s not like @PedroMcJimenez that is just grounded…
Or @AlexB that also gets real winter.

I have also gotten some better gear that has lowered the temperature that I still think is fun to go out and ride…

So I do get out.

We did have the polar vortex hit, and that was insane.
I quite literally didn’t leave the house…

In the beginning of the month I got out on the Llama Link a little bit

I only got on the EUC once this year, and I am missing it.
But I don’t like riding it in wet conditions…

The GT has been the main magic carpet.

I think it’s pretty waterproof.
I don’t worry about it sliding out with the wide tire.
And you go slower, so the cold hits less.
20240105_163521_1

So yeah, if you have a cold wet winter I would recommend getting a Onewheel…

I have been enjoying going out and riding when it’s snowing or sleeting, because of the extra refreshing sensation.
My cold plunge rides.

The Gravel Boi is really nice to have because I will really ride it in any conditions.

The Gravel Flux can also be taken out, but I do worry about ruining the NewBee drives.

This was school pick up on January 8th, and was the last ride before the Polar Vortex.

I don’t think I got to ride again until the 17th…

Bet youve had a worse winter than us up here. Only about 5" in sub 1" increments and thats all gone. Gonna see upper 40s this week. Weakest mn winter I’ve ever seen.
Was just out the other night

Hope you’re well dude

Cause theyre all traitors that ride euc’s now :kissing:

They’re trying to get me too, I’ll be babysitting a sherman max coming shortly for a year. Buddy has a tour overseas and needs someone to watch over it and maintain the battery
