My Esk8s. A journal of sorts

I rode 12 miles at 3:30am today and it was juuust above freezing temperature.

You can still ride! Just layer it up, wear a scarf, and glove the front hand at least.

so…
I need to finish it. need an enclosure .

the 3d printed one was too big…

I’m going to try to shape abs to make it work…
tight spacing

You can always fiberglass over ABS also

Rode at -4C today. On pneumies it’s doable. On thane I wouldn’t risk it. Just be sure to protect that remote hand.

It’s fine on 'thane. It’s the human that needs the most protection.

And don’t charge a cold battery. If you’re riding, it will stay warm from the discharge happening. If you leave the skate outside and it cools off, let it sit inside for an hour+ before charging it.

okie dokie.

this weekend I did some work on the Loaner 2.0.

And today I got it all put together.

This is a deck swap plus for the OG Loaner.

Going from the Paragigm to the Demonseed.
I also put in a Unity and and took out the Flipsky 6.6 Dual Plus.
and I found some riptide bushings for it.

I rode it a tiny bit earlier and it seemed great.

My neighbor Benji has had the Loaner and has been riding it quite a bit.

and we have gone on a few rides together which is awesome…

the other night we were six miles into a ride and her went off a curb…
and the power button flew off…
we
found it and kept riding.

then the remote was freaking out so Benji had to Uber it…

turns out yet again the little wire for the remote receiver broke from the PCB …

so the Flipsky had to go.
I almost ordered a new Zenith for it… until it dawned on me I have 3 boards with Unities that are down…
so it was time to harvest parts…

in the spirit of my shit always breaking one of the more recent victims is the Rayne Crush.
which I had just put together again and was looking really nice…
but I think I have lost a P group in the battery.
fucking fuck.

so I took the Unity from it…

another sign of by gone times… I took the hex griptape off the Demonseed and slapped some Lucid on there…

this Demonseed was just set up as a push board… so I decided this was a better use of it.

Slapping parts together went ok…
nothing has broken yet…

I really enjoyed the way it was feeling on a short ride up the block…

I need to ride it some more.
but I’m pretty sure Benji is gonna be stoked.

The Demonseed has a good 1.5 to 2 inch more standing platform.
and the Unity seems way smoother than the Flipsky…

And since I got a board running one had to break down…

unfortunately my latest darling, the Khymera.

I go for a lunch break ride and it is 70s and sunny!!!

and after 6 miles or so something sounds funny and one of my belts skips on hard braking…

and the left motor is fucked…

so I need to take it apart…

so annoying.

I’m pretty sure I have only had motor bearings blow out at the very start of this adventure with the Metroboard…

Yikes, that looks sketchy. Glad you didn’t get hurt.

I have been very fortunate that my many many many things breaking haven’t caused me to eat it…

I even rode(limped) home with it for a couple miles…

Did a 15 miler with Benji last night.
it was super nice out.

The Loaner 2.0 did really well.

it’s a brand new and exciting failure mode…

Now getting some 6384 BN motors for the Khymera which I wanted anyways…

New winter knee pads.
The TSG DH pro are nice. but they do creep down my leg when I am wearing them over pants.

So trying another darling of the Esk8 world the Leatt Dual Axis.

they feel giant and heavy when you hold them in your hand…
but feel quite light and comfortable when you are wearing them.

I hope they stay put.

had to sand the coloring off…
and did the extra hole hack.

Im experimenting a bit with gaskets and tape and until now, best for me is to skip the gasket and the tape (dont know if it would work wth ebusted enclosures) and just squeeze N-silicone all around the enclosure and bolt it onto the deck and letting it “dry”.
Its pretty hard to get this shit off again, but after looking at your butyl mess i think im doing it the right way hahahahahhahaha

4 days off in a row coming up!!!
nowhere to go.
lots of tinkering to do.

gonna be cold on actual Thanksgiving day, but the weekend should be nice.

I have a ton of stuff to do.

I really need to finish the pack for the Haero.
that takes concentration.

may do some work on it.

I got my new BN motors to fix the Khymera.
that is the low hanging fruit…
just gotta solder some MR60s and open up the enclosure(butyl tape says that is gonna suck)
But still. easiest thing to get a board back to running…

But here is what I really wanna work on…

The Tow Truck / Gravel Flux Deck swap plus.

The Tow Truck with the MBS Comp 95 was my intro to Matrix II trucks.
So I love it for that.
But as it currently existed, the main purpose for it, was to pull the kids in the trailer.
Not so much for real EMTB type riding in trails.

The Haero took that spot, even though it is down currently, the Haero will remain the one board with bidings.

So the Tow Truck did not need bidings…

But it would be too easy to just take the bindings out right…
I actually did take the front one out for halloween, but the back one was trickier because of how I had the wires routed to the Box…

So where my head went, was to get another Flux Deck, which I love so, and use that giant comfortable platform, for the tow truck…

I keep calling it the Gravel Flux…

I thought it was gonna basically be a deck swap…

got some Splatter goat to match the Flux…

and I took the Tow truck apart.

this picture here captures the end of an era!!!

So I move the trucks over and here come the Esk8 god’s to say not so fast…

and yep, you guessed it. Wheel bite with the MBS 9 inch tires…

it is a good thing I had just ordered 6 more of them for this set up…

So I go on to ponder life and think of how I can move the wheels out further.

and I could not think of any cheap solutions…

So.
I decided to slap 8s on there.

and wow. so puny…
but I actually like the look better.
and have a theory it will turn a bit better… not sure.

but for now we move ahead.

I opened up the motors and changed the exposed bearing…

these have some age to them…
they still run and come up sensored so I will wait until they really die before getting new motors…
wonder it that will be months or days after it starts running…

So.
The Gravel Flux is pretty close…

my next cunundrum is going to be how to protect and route the wires through the bottom of the board…

I am not totally sure what my plan is…

I decided the Box is gonna go sideways. to leave more feet room.

I think I’m actually going to try to use the existing threaded inserts that are on the Deck to secure the Box…

and I am also thinking about using a flat sheet of abs on the bottom to go over the wires to protect them…

and I am pretty sure I am just going to put a big hole on the bottom of the deck and enclosure to route the wires…

so yeah. lots going on there…

Nice to see this review. We must be on the same biorhythm or something.

We ride very similar emtb setups already.
I just got to try LHBs super flux build out on matrix 2s (no bindings) with 8" tires and was wondering if 9" would bite or not.

I hated the Lacroix Jaws deck and always assumed I’d hate the Flux deck. I really enjoyed it surprisingly, especially for not having bindings on it and being a binding lover.

It’s interesting that our battery box fits prefectly sideways on it too. Keep up the buying… Err I mean… Research!

Have you checked out E-Toxx (nowind) axle extenders? Might give you enough extra width for the 9’s.

And my first thought for the inner deck wires was @NullBlox wire loom, but I think he’d have to make an XL version to fit the phase/sensor wires instead of just the battery wires.

well, I am not gonna lie,… but I have not been on dirt or grass on a Board in a minute…
I got excited with the Haero and full bindings, for a minute, but then the temporary battery I had in there crapped out I have been slacking… and have not make finishing that battery a priority.

And I have not taken the Tow Truck on the trails. because I like the Haero better and suddently no heel straps felt odd…

So I have just been hitting the pavement.

I did take the Pint X on the trail the other day for a super slow stroll…
definitely not the same thing…

I do think the Gravel Flux will get some more loving…

You know dude.
These very faintly crossed my mind.
But not in a serious way.
So I had not actually gone to the website until just now.

the price is not too crazy.
I wish he had pictures of it mounted so I could have a better vision.

I am now just leaning on going with the parts I have, because I am in the 2 hour window of the day that i am fiscally responsible…

But I had thought about getting these Trampa offset wheels, but I was not really sure how far out they would actually move the tire from the deck.

I keep thinking about these, and still kind of want them, because I like the color.
But I also think they would not move the tire far enough with the MBS 9s.

So I want to get them maybe with the 8 inch mudpluggers…
Again, I am very susceptible to videos and advertising, so I love the way the look in this video.

but, but, I circled back to, thinking that ride would be similar to the 8s I have on the Fivestars, and thought I should leave it alone.

I also pondered getting the 3D Servisas axles, but then I would also need new mounts, and yada yada, yada.

For the wires what I thought more of was a top plate, similar to what Apex has on their board, or the Trampa wings…

I even pondered fabricating something with ABS sheets…

But, I ended up just wanting to take the wires through the bottom as I thought that would be easier.

And since this is a bit of a frankenstein board, it ain’t got to be too pretty…

The Holiday was great.
Stayed home!!!
Weather was nice!!!
Got 2 boards running.

Got the gravel Flux Rolling.

Put the Drive together.
running 8 inch knobbies on MBS Fivestar.
11/62 #25H chain.
my old beat up battle hardened Flipsky 6384s that I battle hardened. they still come up sensored.

I cut the Junction box to mount the Infinysink on the outside like I did with the Haero.

So I got a little weird with mounting the enclosure and routing the wires.

I decided to use the inserts that were already on the Flux Deck.

2 on either side of the deck so 4 holding the enclosure and double sided tape.

Then I sent it and punched a bunch of holes through the deck.

with these long ass wires and handling them a bunch I kept worrying about messing up the sensor wires…
I ran detection a bunch of times through the build before buttoning things up to see how it came up.

so far so good…

So I continued to get weird and put a sheet of abs to cover the wires on the bottom…

I covered the hole with Butyl Tape.

I hope this thing is sufficiently water resistant.

and I crammed it all in there… I do want to put a layer of two of heat shrink around the battery so I will pop that out a bit later and retape it better.

still coming up sensored!!!

Then I took it on a 6 mile night ride and it was great.

I rode on the road and that felt great.
quite a bit louder and rattlier than the Street Flux… but great still
went over to the school and hopped on some grass…
and it did fine. but for this I wish it had 9 inch tires…

I just want to transition to grass and over rough surfaces more seamlessly.

The next day I took it down to the Gravel trails.
I pulled the trailer on rhese a ton with the kids.
but only did solo rides on them on the Tow Truck very rarely…

It was fun.
it does good on older gravel and dirt packed trails.
the new small gravel is soupy…

And I opened up the Khymera and slapped the BN 6384s in there!!!

I got out in it today for a lunch break ride and did 17 miles and it was just great.
These motors are awesome and we’re eating up hills.
I am glad they were forced onto me…

this thing really can’t turn in a tight radius for nothing.
but it is super fun to carve at speed and seems very stable…
I love the giant standing platform…
really happy with it
