The ESCs have heatsinks and fans, and during operation the backpack will be open at the top as demonstrated. For now.

To be fair, most ESCs live inside a completely sealed enclosure with no cooling apart from whatever heatsink came on the ESC :man_shrugging:

This. Plus, it’s only going to get better this year as I work towards what I ultimately envision.

Might wanna look into getting a hard shell backpack.

I don’t like hard shell backpacks and have a really good plan for the Osprey Kamber 22 I have now, which also happens to be a popular esk8 backpack (thanks @rich).

Why the recommendation @Chupacabra?

If it’s for safety, hard-shells are still crushable, plus I’ll soon be making a pull-out battery pack that safely encapsulates the cells.

If it’s for easier configuration and modification, I have a great mounting solution, and know how to make holes in material without tearing.

You are welcome but thanks for what? :joy:

Wrong guy, thanks @Arch!

Yeah for protection of components in case of a fall. I use a boblbee backpack. I use 1KW battery made of lipo cells and ride pretty hard so I guess it’s usage based too.

Thanks for your concern! I’m going to design and make an ESC enclosure for better integration, cooling and protection against impacts, as well as a battery enclosure for the LiPo’s and BMS that can slide in and out like a laptop. Want to have it all modular so it’s easy to replicate on another.

Also, no backpack wears as well as one from a proper hiking / outdoor gear company that’s been doing it for almost half a century, plus mine has helmet storage and board straps, and enough space for my daily haul (laptop, peripherals, lunch, additional outer layers, etc) too.

Rode like this today with only the leading edge of the backpack open for airflow. 17 degrees Celsius outside today, so a little cool. The ESCs didn’t even go as high as luke warm to the touch.

I’ll provide more feedback on this when it’s >30 degrees Celsius.

Cool! You took this a step further than I did. I made a reserve tank for my trampa just with batteries.

I’ve been thinking about doing it with my mains and getting them off the top deck. How heavy is your pack? Do you get fatigue? Do you worry about being thrown off balance due to being too heavy?

Maybe 5kg, nog sure, but I can check.

I don’t notice it during use, but if I ever needed it, the pack has a hip-belt too.

I don’t, really not a problem. Maybe if you had an ill-fitting pack?

I use the osprey talon 22. Cool fact about osprey is the almighty guarantee is all mighty. I had mine for fifteen years traveled all over w it and took a couple good falls on my board when I started riding. They sent me a new model totally free

I use the turnigy 20s total is 10 kilos. I’m still worried about weight up high🤣

Once you free your feet from maneuvering all that weight around, there’s no going back. Fear the taste of freedom.

I’ve cut into mine, not sure the warranty covers that.

Take the patches off and let it Frey a bit. It will. Or just put a patch over it. They will still fix or replace it

I’ve been riding for a year and a half with fucking ESCs that’s been trying their best to fucking kill me and I’m done with them (it takes a lot to upset me this much). Basically every other day I ride, I’d have a low speed off because they’re made for 1/5th scale R/C car racing, not carrying humans or doing a stellar job of smooth power modulation.

My typical crash scenario goes like this, pull off tenderly and deal with the cogging mentally, ride (yay!), let off the throttle or get on the brake, get back on the throttle without velvety smooth trigger control, ESCs dump massive amounts of power into the motors, board accelerates from under me unceremoniously dumping me on the ground.

Apart from injuries, the last two such power dumps (that’s two out of three ride days this week) have now ruined my elbow guards, and today seemingly broken some teeth off a POM gear in one gearbox as well. To anyone reading this, fuck HobbyWing Max6 ESCs, they’re not made for esk8 or the road where you have heaps of traction.

I’m not getting back on the board before they haven’t been replaced.

I’ve got a Unity and metr Pro Unity on the way to tie me over until a more permanent / supported solution is tested and available on the market (like the neoBOX’s).

@Deodand @Blasto do you guys think the Unity will be fine with 1.5m phase leads?
