MoonBug MTB - AT Moon Drives, Proto RKPs, Bro Deck, 12s6p 30q

Whoa never seen this happen. How’d it go?

Thankfully not when going at any real speeds. Just hopped on the board and was about to start riding, lifted my front leg a little to adjust and then snap…

Thankfully indeed. We’re they new when you got them? Definitely concerning if not directly attributed to something

I got them from a used board along with a few other parts including tyres, hubs and trucks. It probably sat in someones shed for a year without any use.

I thought this was common? I’m not exactly surprised that they snapped

Probably not gonna help much as they seem to ship only in Germany… but here they seem to be on stock

Switching gear drives on my board so I can run 5.5/1

Here are the old gear drives after 3 months of riding

Outside - I’ll be switching to black stainless steel lid bolts:

Inside - I went greaseless after switching trucks and its looking pretty clean:

Comparing weight savings from Batch 2 to 4:

Old parts scrubbed up nicely:

New gear drive is on the board but need to finish a few things and wait for some inner tubes from Apex Customs

You can do that?

Absolutely, I advise it if you don’t mind the extra sound.

Plastic is self lubricating and grease attracts dirt. You don’t need grease

Damn I did not know that! I’ll run it without grease now haha. I actually like the noise, it’s like having a v8 car.

Wow, I’m pretty shocked. I thought you had to run grease.

Other than there being less noise, is there any other advantage to using grease?

Decreased wear on gears is the main one

Is it more efficient without it though? Like I can see maybe grease preventing it from free rolling as well as without it.

Yes the freeroll without grease is very good

Awesome, thank you. I’ll try it without this time around on my MTB.

This is a sick build. You may have mentioned but why use rkp on a mtb deck?

Went for a 30min ride, excuse the battery straps.

5.5/1 - great acceleration and braking. Lose a lot of top end, I’d say this gearing is strictly for eMTB or 9" tyres

Different animal with this gearing… already scrapped the new gearbox case :joy:
