One of many reasons I do not like panel mount XT90s. Just epoxy the non-panel-mount varieties through the fiberglass. :blush:

I have not yet tried a smart BMS.

I have one, a JBD 10-17S 30 amp, but it is pretty large in comparison to dumb Daly, and would require a lot of new cable management in either of my enclosures, so it remains in its box.

I know smaller versions exist, but I just have not gone there yet.

I am dubious of the Dumb Daly’s ability to balance, as the one on my Dmegc pack definitely does not, but that could be my fault for ignoring the instructions regarding the order of hooking up the balance plug first and then B- wire second.

I do like the small form factor of the dumb Daly, and have another one for the Tenpower 50XG 10s2p build, but this a a newer version with 20 amp charge and discharge, 14awg, and a temp sensor.

The TenPower 50XG single cell has a 15 amp max charge rate, but I will not be exceeding the 10 amp rating of my charge port and its fuse.

I do have a parallel charge port, as yet unwired, but would struggle to exceed 10 amps from my charging sources anyway, and putting them in parallel for more charge current poses its own risks.

i will be using no less than 0.2mm copper on every subsequent battery build. Even low power non esk8 batteries. My laptop3s2p EVE 35v battery got 0.15mm nickel only as there was not enough extra length to fit inside the housing if I used 0.2mm and 0.1mm sandwich.

0.3mm copper is within the realm of my AWZ P20B welder using stainless sandwich, and welding flux, but at near max power.

So 0.25mm copper seems like my goldilocks zone with this welder, and would be the equivalent resistance of 1mm pure nickel.

The TenPower 50XG 10s2p build will probably get 0.2mm copper as that is what I have on hand, but maybe not enough of it. I will find out today.
If I have to order more, I am ordering 0.25mm.

I know I could safely get away with less conductor, but I have an abhorrence of voltage drop and resistance heating, from my days living on 12v lead acids, and old habits are hard to break.

Overkill function excites me, where ‘good enough’ does not, says the hypocrite with hub motors and lingyi.

Overkill appearance also does not, mostly.

Other’s opinions hold less and less weight with every day I age. The exception is woodworking when the wood itself deserves reverence.

My first loopkey panel mount had the flange on the outside of enclosure, but I was not keen on how far the loopkey then protruded, or having to solder to it after it was already mounted to enclosure.

I have since mounted all xt90 panel mounts with flange on the inside of enclosure, and will continue to do so.

The nut loosening is hardly an insurmountable issue. The reason it loosened was likely as I didn’t torque it enough for fear of distorting the gasket, as well as lack of access to get a small socket over it with the battery in place and cinched down, and used only needle nose pliers to tighten it.

I likely rolled hundreds of miles before even adding the backing nuts, as the M4 screws cut their own threads and were able to pull it tight to enclosure and were good enough to roll with Until I got to Ace Hardware and got some M4 nuts.

The nut that loosened was on the parallel ESC feed, for a top mount range extender battery, which I used for the first time last week.

if I were seeking higher ingress protection I would consider epoxy on the XT90’s for loopkey and parallel ESC feed and butyl rope/tape, but am a bit reluctant because of their relative permanence, and an everything’s temporary mindset.

I like the ability to drop the enclosure, and remove the gasket easily, and have a look inside, quickly. The blue masking tape is easily removed and replaced and a black sharpie hides it as well as I care to hide it.

Ive not even bothered to paInt my enclosures. They are still Volan green, and the one on The Guppy is wider than the deck in the back, as it was designed to fit the midsize kicktail, which now never gets used despite all the effort I put into it.

Making a segmented flexible enclosure for the super flexible guppy seems highly unlikely to occur anytime soon. The stiff enclosure velcro cinch strapped to it has been good enough for several thousand miles.

It certainly does not need a new battery. The BAK45D 10s2p is still performing very well with ~2100 miles on it, but the Tenpower 50XG is a much more capable cell.

I would have to do a lot of reworking things to fit my specific unwisely purchased smart BMS, and it is only 20 amps, not 30 as I incorrectly stated above.

The 20 amp Daly will drop into place.

Second time that at the half way point, I strapped the portable charger to the deck, and then rolled and charged at over 7 amps.

This basically prevents 10s2p BAK45d voltage from going below 36v even with full throttling top for 2.5 miles of the 5 that I rolled with it attached.

i swear the throttle feels like the 10s battery is still at 39volts when charger is holding it at ~36.

I got to start a roll with it attached and charging.

7 amps continuous output is perhaps a bit too high for the 178wh EVE 35v 7s2p feeding the booster, depleting it from 29.4 to the BMS’s LVD. The battery compartment exterior felt quite hot.

There is now a radiant and convective barrier between booster and battery the booster compartment felt cooler than the battery compartment.

The booster’s finned heatsink stays cool at speed at 7 amps output

Gonna dial it down to 6 amps.

Returned home with battery and throttle to spare after 12.7 miles, according to remote’s trip odometer.

I also lowered the chariot tire PSI so it rides softer for Fiona. They are at 7.7psi.

We left for today’s roll with the portacharger strapped to the deck between my feet voltage unloaded set to 41.65v.

I spun the current limiting pot down a bit, but am not sure by how much.

At the 0.8 mile mark park we walked and sniffed for a half mile or so and the BAK battery was back at 41.65v accepting 0.00 amps when Fiona and the Esk8 swapped positions.

Got lucky with traffic, as the draw bridge cut off following traffic, and was able to hold a full lane for a few miles on end at near top speed without worrying about traffic wanting to pass me then taking the first right so I have to slam on the brakes.

At about 7.5 miles I leaned down and saw the wattmeter was reading 0.00 amps, So I pulled over and removed the portacharger from the deck. Esk8 battery was about 39.1v. The portacharger battery compartment was cooler than yesterday’s roll when I removed it

I was able to notice the board was lighter and more nimble between my feet without the portacharger strapped there anymore.

There is basically no noticeable sag for the first 7.5 miles when starting out with the portacharger set up and doing its thing. Wind was light and I It felt I was able to get going faster and still have some more throttle left.

The portacharger as an Anti-sag device and a range extender has me pretty satisfied.

It is unobtrusive strapped to the deck between my feet, and the airflow it sees keeps it cooler as opposed to walk and charge or chill and charge.

The portacharger can also be strapped to the deck of the Mini with its 10s1P EVE40PL, and more than double its potential range.

We took the mini here for the evening’s squat and hunch cormorant hunt, adding 2 miles to Today’s total of about 14.5.

I can’t tell if you’re the US or not, but in the US with right side driving riding as a “lefty” is way safer.

Im also mad that people where you’re at still try and do stuff like cut you off after seeing you have a dog. That’s just extra rude. In my experience, if I’m carrying my dog, more drivers are likely to be nice. I still alwaya assume people can’t drive, or are assholes to be safe.

I’m in Florida, am Right handed, and skate and surf left foot forward.

I almost exclusively tow Fiona in her Chariot with my right hand, remote in left.

I can ride switch but with about 1/20th the confidence and ability. I rarely roll from A to B, without Fiona in her chariot.

My Mirror comment was only as I know Raphael is a goofyfoot and the chariot would have to be on the other side of the Skate in that photo for it to possibly be an inviting photo to him, or other goofyfoots.

Some of the roads I am skating have pretty narrow bike lanes, with a sidewalk at the same level and not much of a transition. The sidewalk cracks can be pretty annoying and some of them can be dangerous to my back truck with its hub motors and 105mm sleeves, So I avoid them whenever I can.

The Bike lane can also have a lot of gravel or just other obstacles that make me want to ride in the main traffic lane, when there are no cars, or if they are just doing 20-25mph and I can just hog a lane at that same speed.

Being Florida, means tourists, and tourists everywhere double their sense of narcissistic entitlement, and lose half of their ability to think logically, but something about being in Florida makes them extra entitled and illogical. Gotta acount for the Florida factor. It’s not only the heat, it is the stupidity.

If they are unfamiliar with the roads, they are likely driving slower, holding up traffic behind them, and when they see a guy on an electric skateboard towing a sheepdog in a homemade chariot , they often bust out their phones and slow down and start taking pictures or video. This then enrages the drivers behind them who absolutely must get to the next traffic light ASAP, so they too can look at their phones and rage scroll, Asap.

I do not enjoy being in front of a camera, and the whole situation can be a real fustercluck.

So I am always looking behind me, and judging the traffic and my best course of action to remain as safe as possible. I hate having to trust any driver to not drift into the bike lane, but there are a few sections of road where this is the only option.

Often it mean lifting the chariot handle high so Fiona can’ fall forward, slamming on the brakes pulling over, or off the road entirely, and other times it will be trying to make eye contact with the following driver, and indicating I will be staying as deep in the bike lane as I can, and for them to pass.

Many understand easily and get around me quickly and safely and give a thank you wave and/or a thumbs up.

Some others are like ‘I am OK maintaining 24mph 2 car lengths behind you in a 35mph zone and holding up traffic’, like they are doing me a favor. Sometimes, rarely, they are.

I hate holding up traffic, and dislike those who hold up traffic, so I try and be courteous and considerate and not a hypocrite.

The worst is the born and raised Florida locals who are enraged by tourists driving slowly, and just start driving and passing aggressively. These people might not even realize the reason the tourists were going slower was because of me, so they pass and then cut in quickly and only then then see me tucked in the bike lane.

There have been a few people who were basically tailgating me, even though I was tucked high and tight in the bike lane, coasting. I often get annoyed at this and wave for them to pass, and will slow down more basically forcing them to pass. A few times they then took a right or a left into a home’s driveway, So they were just giving me plenty of space knowing they were turning and were in no rush.

There have been a few times where they pass and then make a hard right in front of me, because they needed to save that 2.5 seconds. I am glad I have strong brakes now.

it is not really the busy season yet and I imagine once it is I will either just go at half the speed and stay on the sidewalks or just choose to ride elsewhere, places that do not cater to tourists and have to deal with their traffic.

The draw bridges when they open can make it so there is Zero following traffic on sections of this road, and when I time this correctly, it is a blast to just full throttle in the middle of the road and bark with Fiona. She loves it, I love it.

There are a few sections of newly paved road that are so smooth and warble and obstacle free with wide bike lanes, that it is just hammer down, both wishing I had more hammer, and also glad that I do not, as 25 no wind, or 28mph( with tailwind) is simply more than fast enough, for me.

Today’s roll I had the portable charger/ Antisag device strapped to the deck and with a slight tailwind was holding 28mph for a good long distance through this ultra smooth section, with little to no traffic.

That makes sense. I was thinking more of how riding with the right foot in front makes it easier to watch traffic in the US.

I can ride switch on a manual board but not so well on my electric board. So you’re not alone with having less confidence switching stances. I’d never try switching footing near traffic.

Bike lanes in texas suck too for all the same reasons. The US just sucks for non car travel

That is always the most awkward moments in my opinion. A few times Ive moved more out of the way but end up getting more in the way because they are turning into a driveway. Their fault for not using a blinker but I still hate when it happens.

I’d love to be able to use a little car set up like you do, but my dog is only 14 pounds so its not safe enough for me to be comfortable. I’d go like 5 mph max if I had the same setup. I think it’s fine to use with a bigger dog though.

I just prefer having her on my body so if something happens I’m absorbing the entire impact. Which I have fallen a few times with her on me and she was never hurt. Worst case was when I fell in mud so she got mudy too. Second worse was when her googles got a tiny scratch on the top of them.

Fiona has never made a move to jump out of the moving chariot, and has never lost her balance and fell out.

She did jump out of the rolling Kayak once, on the maiden voyage. I looked back when I felt the kayak weight shift in my hand to see her deciding she really needed to sniff something, about to jump out. We were doing about 10mph and she got the front two paws down and then the chin hit and she rolled once.

I panic stopped and checked her out thoroughly and when she realized I was not angry, she went and sniffed and scented that which needed to be scented, and was all tail wagging happy and eager to return to the rear well of the kayak and continue to the water.

The kayak cart’s stock wheels were not up to the task of rolling a mile at 14mph, and I bought a cheap mountainboard just for a truck and its wheels. I cut the truck in half spun its 10mm axle in my drill and used an angle grinder to lathe it down so It could be JBwelded into the kayak cart square axle tubing, and then it was rolling on 200x50 pneumatics and a wider track width for more stability.

She obviously loved riding in the kayak behind the esk8 so much, that sometimes I’d just load her in the kayak and just cruise the neighborhood.

I then made a basic chariot for her, and once I clamped a plastic box to the base and put some padding inside of it she jumped right in before I asked her, and we have likely rolled 5000+ miles since then.

Only once, did she jump out, and that was when I had to brake to a stop at a stop sign and was close to fully stopped, when a loud blast of thunder scared the shit out of her and she jumped out.

Now, If I do not lower the handle for her to jump out, she will not jump out. She has gotten quite good at anticipating turns and leaning into them, and I have a few road islands that I call my racetrack, and I can roll it pretty aggressively, hissing tires/ urethane and such.

Rolling the racetrack aggressively, I will stop and lower the handle to let her out if she wants, but she always chooses to stay put, as she finds rolling a fun as I do.

Her chariot is balanced pretty well with her butt up against the back wall, and the faster we go the more likely she is centered with her butt where it needs to be, and her front paws splayed wide, and a shit eating grin on her face.

She barks twice, and then I feel obligated to join her, and so two lunatics go cruising past at speed, barking.
We’ve averaged 10+ miles a day for the last 8 months, and Only recently have I been exploring much further away from home base. I partially credit this to the 105mm Puaida hub motor sleeves which ride a lot nicer than the meepo 105mm sleeves did, or the 90mm sleeves before that.

Paralleling another battery to the ESC direct feed, and carrying portable charging sources has recently upped our range to the 25 mile zone, and I will soon finishing the most capable battery yet to reside my enclosure. A 10S2P of Tenpower 50XG cells.

All 3 10S batteries in parallel and the two portable charging sources should give us 35 miles of range and ability to explore further.

She is 12 and a half, and I got to make every day she has left a good day, as she is an awesome soul, and she loves to roll in her chariot, and I love towing her in it.

Make an adapter, when doing balancing or maintenance on the battery and it put or accessible you can just swap the the smart bms and use it to automate and Bluetooth the boring that a lapse of attention could also accidentally mess something up.

Fyi - in the care package of dumb bms on the way to you are a pile of possibly working in good order daily bms. A part of the harvested bms as I switched to 100% smart bms so they SHOULD be good… but ive had a couple batteries die from poor balancing daily bms and just can’t even use them on anything anymore

I wonder if the order of hooking up the balance plug before the blue B- wire fries the ability to balance. I know that I did not follow this order of operations on the dmegc pack whose bms does not balance.

I have added an xt30 to the blue wire so I can follow the order on my BAK and EVE builds.

I will check the BAK balance again once i get the tenpower 50xg installed

The 30ma max of balancing current at 4.18v plus could be too little to late on an unbalanced pack too.

I got to admit, every time an APP says it needs access to everything, I usually decide…nevermind.

Fiona and I rolled to here here from the south 2 days ago.

It’s a little over 5 miles away with zero detours approaching from either north or south.

I had strapped the porta-charger to the deck and plugged it into charge port before leaving home, and bent down to press its power button on at mile 1.

It was set for 6.15 maximum output Amps, seeking to hold 41.63v.

On the sand 4 miles later, a good distance of that at max speed and throttle, it was still charging, and my esk8 battery voltage was 41.53v and amps tapered to 4.45, and were dropping relatively quickly in the constant voltage phase.

It went another few minutes before 7s2p was depleted to BMS LVD cutoff, and charging stopped. It said something like 3.78AH and 154.6 watt hours delivered when I removed it and returned it to the chariot. The Eve 35v 7s2p is a 178Wh battery, so at 90% booster efficiency it delivered 170.6 watt hours to the booster and roughly 16 watt hours were turned to heat.

So basically I can go 4-5 miles at a good clip and arrive with a nearly fully charged ( and cool) esk8 battery and also have had 4-5 miles of NO sag. I am only running hub motors and 10s2P so I can easily notice the loss of power once battery voltage gets below 39.5v, and much more easily notice when hitting throttle at mile 3 and it responds like the first throttle mash of the roll.

The sag free more responsive throttle and slightly higher top speed are very easily noticed, and much appreciated.

The EVE 35V 7s2p is however getting too hot discharging at this rate.

I lowered max current to 5.67 amps the next day, and it was still getting too hot, as measured by an IR temp gun on the enclosure in direct contact with the battery where it was insulated from airflow fairly soon after the BMS LVD kicked in.

The Booster compartment is divided from battery compartment, and is 25C cooler when rolling at speed as there is so much airflow over the booster’s deep finned heatsink.

I really wish I used a power cell instead of an energy cell for this 7s2p.

I am not approaching the 10.2 amp rating of the EVE 35v, but in an airtight enclosure designed as a tight 2P thick brick, it gets too hot starting at 4.5ish amps and finishing at a little over 6.4amps

I have another 25 amp 7s BMS ordered slow boat, and am thinking EVE 30P would run cool enough and not break the bank. Molicel P28a is also enticing at its current price, but not sure which will run cooler down to 2.7volts per cell ( voltage rebounds to 3.1v average in about a half hour)

In the meantime, I am going to try and eliminate dead airspace between battery and enclosure exterior where possible, and allow airflow under the porta charger too, but I do not think those measures will be enough to keep it below 60C, and certainly not as summer approaches. Ambient temps were still cool, for Florida at ~75f/25c

I can also throttle max output amps, but it seemed that lowering from 6.15 to 5.67 amps had little effect on battery temperature. The longer run time allowed it to build similar heat level, but I need to record better data.

Honestly I’d rather be able to increase max output amperage, when used as a Anti-sag throttle hammer secondary range extender while rolling, when rolling hard. If just ambling along, slower is OK.

About 1.5 miles away from where that photo above was taken, and having left the beach with a nearly fully charged ESk8 battery, we were on a main thoroughfare with little surrounding traffic, when I heard someone screaming off to my right, and I let off the throttle to have a look.

When looked over, I saw a large PitBull or maybe Staffordshire terrier trailing a leash, tearing after us at full speed, and a relatively young fit human running after it pumping their arms wildly screaming.

I was doing about 19mph in the bike lane when I first saw it, and it was easily closing the gap when I nailed the throttle and moved out of the gravel strewed bike lane into the 35mph car lane.

It got about 2 meters from Fiona’s chariot before we started pulling away. It kept up the chase for another 200 meters before giving up, and I did have to navigate a blind turn littered with reflectors side and middle, over some cracked abraded pavement at speed that I had never chosen to roll before, as there is an inside barrier on a wider than average sidewalk but which is not a 25mpg sidewalk

I was very appreciative the BAK45D was at a high state of charge, and still able to get us above 25mph, but was certainly in the blues brother ‘blessed gods of acceleration don’t fail us now!’ mode.


I rode the Mini the other day with a nearly fully charged 10s1P Eve 40PL battery.

Aimed at a radar sign full throttle and towing Fiona, it read 23mph where the Guppy usually never gets us above 22mph.

So the 10s1P Eve 40PL Mini, is indeed faster than the Guppy, as suspected, at least when fully charged.

It is sketchy AF at 22+ mph, as my trucks are kept cup washer rattlingly loose for that 8 foot turning radius at low speed. It feels okay to about 16 or 17mph on the smooth pavement.

I did add another wedged riser and removing a rubber riser for little height change. Adding 7 degrees more wedge to front truck, and further dewedging rear by 7, and carving figure 8’s, it feels better, but that rear truck twitch over road warbles at 16+ mph seems barely changed.

This is a Puaida hub motor hanger which has always felt twitchy to me.

I have an unused Meepo hub motor hanger that came with my ‘540 watt’ motors that I’d like to try.

It is both narrower, and seems to sit lower on a barrell bushing, but I need a meepo baseplate as kingpin to Pivot length is about 11mm shorter than all my other RKP baseplates. It would certainly handle differently, but I’ve no idea if it would be less or more twitchy when as loose.

I have a hanger from the Junkking 83mm hub motors I could try too, but I do not trust it as much. I did much prefer how that truck felt( with 83mm sleeves) but am running 105’s worn to 103mm now.

Or, I can just not take the mini above ~17mph and not worry about the twitchy at speed nature of it.
