I think blown ESCs needs to be on this list, but I like what you have.
what is the story on blown stormcores?
was it just a permanent feature? or did they fix bugs along the way? as they figured out some of the problems?
i feel like last time i edited it it removed the votes. so i’m afraid to touch it.
Yeah after a time you can’t edit it. It’s fine lol. I forget which D series was blowing up a bunch, but then they halted it and tried to replace with 100dx? Which others also seemed to be blowing up. I think @Yeahthatperson blew one up recently, then moved to solos.
Hoyt didnt waste vc money on a harpoon
they moved away from 100D because of the DRV chip shortage.
Seems they didn’t get the DRV-less design quite right because the 100Dx is the one with a firey reputation. Any 100D before the 100Dx, I wouldn’t worry about in a board, as long as you run 80a or below.
Haha what VC money.
I love how split this poll is. If Skatan hates prebuilts, that makes skatanism just another elitist religion
uh, yeah. should I start a go fund me to buy LaCroix? seriously though, we take no joy in the demise of another premier esk8 brand. competition elevates. and the peeps and product at LaCroix were both solid.
while the community can, with limited insight and knowledge, point to various “causes” or “mistakes” they made, one of the key challenges for a North American eskate brand is competing with the Chinese. Why is that? My evaluation is that NA companies have no choice but to deliver premium quality to avoid lawsuits. Cast trucks? Cant risk it. Questionable battery builds? One fire can sink a brand. ESC issues throw the rider? Potential lawsuit. Customer Service? expected from a NA brand but less so from the bargain brands (though that is changing as they up their game).
Another reason is that you pay customs duty on an import while the NA company has to pay those duties up front.
Aaaanyway, it’s a challenging situation that doesnt really result in 1:1 comparisons. A house fire is a house fire whether it happens the first time the product is plugged in or after 10,000 miles of wear and tear on the internals. At the end of the day, if the community wants innovation, is it going to come from a Chinese factory or a NA company that jumped into the biz out of love for the sport? Have the Chinese companies, in general, drafted off existing designs and innovations or brought their own to the table? I’m confident they can get there with time but without some innovative companies really embedded in the community, they wont have anything to copy and sell cheap.
Soap box out.
I can tend to agree with you. Fire within the batteries (among the other problems others pointed out) completely dissolved Kaly
It’s crazy to me that we’re so attentive with batteries, but our sister sports of EUC, ebikes, and escooters treat them as a compromise. Within my wheelhouse, people riding recalled eucs because of HIGH fire risk.
This one had me scratching my head I have to say, https://youtu.be/olJPUBJwDbo?si=m1co1TDZ83W0YGrv&t=88
Exactly my thought, but sad nonetheless
Also, esk8 companies should stop diversifying
I don’t come on this forum too much anymore, but this is very sad news. LaCroix attempted to build a company based on quality and premium service, to stand above others, but you could see that model start to fail.
Unfortunately the market is geared towards cheaper products and poorer service. People honestly don’t care too much when buying a new esk8 (forums members are usually the exception, not the rule)
The Chinese companies don’t really care too much about the odd failure, as it has no real repercussions for them. A local vendor relies on the good will and reputation they build up. Any small fault with any product can have a massive impact on the business of this type.
I’m very sorry to see Lacroix go, Alex and his team were a great bunch and clearly passionate about providing a quality product.
Why? Scooters are great. Harpoons too.
