I got an IDEA (brackets)

I recently bought @fessyfoo’s pair of IDEA brackets, just to do stupid stuff with them

Components


Electronic package

Because I want to experiment with different decks, for shits and giggles, everything needs to be mounted to the trucks. Should make swapping decks, adding wedge plates and/or changing IDEA bracket orientation easy.

Motors mounted with no surprises

ESC gets mounted with a strip of VHB

Adding peripherals only required some minor JST crimping

  • Hoyt Puck Receiver
  • MakerX Bluetooth module
  • Power switch

Shortly after, all mounted with hot glue
Hot glue on a motor controller’s heatsink?!.. shhhh of course. silly question. Moving on.

Battery
Left over from a previous project, it doesn’t have a BMS. I’ll just balance charge it with my hobby charger, good enough.

It gets some F4 plates for additional protection (I’m too lazy to print a proper case)

and gets masking taped onto the deck with utmost levels of care and precision

Finishing touch

Vesc programming was uneventful, got a relaxed 50/-30A motor config.
Thought I saw smoke, but think it was just dust coming out of the motors.


Deck #1: Tynee Explorer

It’s a great deck, I hope it doesn’t break. But my hopes aren’t too high :rofl:


First proper ride in a few days. After that, I’ve got a long line of decks waiting to be tortured…

Ya, i thought about adding the brackets to the deck like that. But it was too long for my liking. So i chopped off the ends. Loved the way it turned out.

Damn that’s a nice job. I second cutting off the ends to keep it not too crazy, and/or using offset trucks. If you’re low enough you can use risers on different sides of the brackets to adjust wheelbase.

Your tiny tynee and massive tynee must look very funny side by side. I don’t know which I like more.

It would be cool to have a full synthetic deck made to use brackets. Maybe one where a strong countersunk plate can be used on top of the deck

Yea we ended up cutting into the deck as well so the brackets fit flush into the deck too

Couple days of riding, actually not nearly as terrible as I thought! The best kind of result is a surprising one.

It is definitely underpowered (can’t power through corners), but that was expected.

Suprisingly, there was no deck scraping at any point.

The ride is very chushy and smooth, likely because of the crazy amount of flex.

Deck 2
In only 10 minutes, I swapped over to the (stunningly pretty) afterburner 121c deck (won in BOTY 2023).

I had to top-mount the deck brackets with two big spacers (otherwise they’d clash with the deck, top or bottom mounted)

Worked out fine tho, it ends up having a similar standing platform and flex as the Tynee Explorer deck

Super fascinating results. I thought it felt worse, especially in the corners. It was very unhappy sustaining turns, wanting to twitch every which way. If you stopped paying attention, the thing would become a bouncing trampoline.


Discussion

So, the “real reason” (the justification to myself) for this build is to help me get better understanding of how deck construction affects esk8 handling. I’m very curious other’s thoughts (tell me I’m crazy and wrong)

Let’s do a proper science bit and propose some theories.

Theory 1
At first, I thought “where” the deck flexes matters. Basically, Tip flex = good, middle flex = bad. Given that The Tynee Explorer deck handled so decent, I’m not so sure on this now. (the IDEA brackets don’t flex, obviously. However, the Explorer deck still flexed a bunch that the tips… tip flex wasn’t zero. More experimentation needed)

Theory 2
More “springy” decks feel worse on track. So deck materials that act like springs (returning the energy dumped into them) will feel worse.
Decks with more of a “dampening” effect will be more forgiving, predictable, and stable.

Trying to connect this qualitative feeling to material properties, like viscoelasticity, storage modulus, loss modulus, dampening radio, etc. still learning though.

This theory provides an explanation for why the Tynee Explorer deck(wood and fiberglass) felt passable- Wood is very good at dampening vibrations.
The 121c deck(solid carbon fiber) didn’t feel great- carbon fiber is very good at being a spring, not very good at dampening vibrations.

100% agree that flex is not especially the enemy but moreso how the deck construction handles the flex.

I first noticed this difference between trampa decks and the kaly ‘winged’ decks.

The trampa decks felt like noodles to me, with too much flex that was too slow in it’s response time to be able to feel confident on.

The kaly decks however, effectively limited the flex by incorporating the wings, so they didn’t feel as noodly and gross as the trampa decks, but that shortening of the flex area also really increased the power and response of the ‘spring’. I felt the kaly decks were well suited to fast, aggressive carving, but that spring combined with the angular wings made it quite a tiresome board to ride for any extended period of time.

IMO the haero decks have this combo dialled. The concave footpads limit the flex area, and the construction of the deck allows a more natural and a little slower responding spring, without being too slow or ‘lagging’ like the trampa decks tended to.

The middle flex isn’t necessarily bad, it still creates the same end result of higher tip angles. But with middle flex, you loose more ground clearance for the same effect, thus it’s just less effective way so might cause scraping.

What is bad is torsional flex. I feel like it’s easier to eliminate that if you don’t have middle flex.

Deck 3
A MBS warren deck that @TZDKB gifted me a year or two ago (thanks dude!!)

Got a set of flatdeck brackets from @Titoxd1000 (am putting em to use here before they go on another WIP build)

Weird setup, but it works. tons of clearance for wheelbite.

Worked really well, actually. Didn’t get a video, unfortunately, but it’s the best feeling deck so far.

Deck materials tangent

According to this shop, the deck is a “Snowboard Composite Construction”.

Wanting to learn more, this led me to this interesting website about snowboard construction. Amongst other things, it mentions dampening.

Continued doing research, some snowboards also incorporate rubber into their stackup to reduce dampening

It has since been parted out into other projects, primarily since I really didn’t like the deck after it destroyed my feet at CarvePDX 2023

It has been revived. Test rides at i2g tmr, time to destroy my toes again.
