Down bad AF 4 reviews of big daddy Hoyt 5" hubs/tires & testing of 5" tires on other hubs

Now I need to buy the larger Hubs! and wait for this to arrive… ehhh…

I also nominate Mario, and I’d be happy to help get them on his board.

So what hubs do they fit? Bergs? Weight wise plastic hubs would be best for sure.

At the moment I think Hoyt tires only fit Hoyt hubs

That’s too bad…

No it’s brilliant actually. If you want the tires, buy the hubs, and if not, make your own. This is great for the community in general, I am sure other vendors will design hubs to fit these tires. We have not had a new tire option in this community for years. I imagine Hoyt has a solid $30-50k invested into making these, if not a lot more(design/testing/mold/moq costs) it is extremely expensively to make a new tire, so freaking cuddos to Jeff!!! Woooooot! Can’t wait to see what they feel like.

I am wondering why the smaller tire is said to be limited to 28mph? @JJHoyt what sort of things happen if you go faster?

I’m not @JJHoyt, but I would imagine increased wear and tear at higher RPM, more heat resulting in the expansion of rubber which will soften it and therefore weaken (as well as increased wear and tear). This could result in the tire coming off the rim.

these 5" rims, tires, and pulley kits look like they would work on the kahua trucks from the haggy kits. does anyone know for sure yet? I think i want these.

I can see the appeal of buying a sexy CNC 400$ rim to put on your 4k$ board to show off, but being forced to pay that much for an average looking hub just to use these tires is rough. Especially since it’s small boards that would benefit the most. I also bet a 300$ cheaper price tag for a complete board would mean a lot more sales…

What I’m saying is: plastic hubs plz  (But I know we can’t because the MOQ for molds is so high…)

hoyt is anti-plastic. bad for the environment. we broke our rule with the puck to offer the DIY community an affordable, reliable remote but I dont think we’ll do that for wheels, particularly given it means large up front mold costs and china sourcing. i’m gonna ignore the “average looking hub” comment.

Given that a popular tire that you are all familiar with was speed rated to 10kph and was regularly pushed to over 50mph with limited issues, I would expect you could push these 5" and 7" tires A LOT harder. Particularly since the 28mph speed rating on the 5" is for continuous speed, not max burst.

Yes, there was a lot of time and cost invested in these. 4 years, NRE, mold costs, flights to Asia (pre-covid), testing and more. It’s challenging to make that back on $100 sets of tires and cheap plastic rims.

That said, whats next? What’s missing in the world of eskate tires?

Track tires, something like what @MoeStooge has created

@RipTideSports is working on something cool too but urethane based I think

Seems like everyone wants wider, so maybe 3" wide versions of the Hoyt/Metro 5-7" tires?

Sounds like the 5" tires could fit Bergs, 6 shooters, the smaller @surfnacho hubs…with a 3" inner hub diameter. That sounds promising.

But the 7" tires at 4.25" ID seem like they would be too big to work on 5 Stars, 3DServisas, Megastars, or hubs that fit 9"+ tires. So, only Hoyt hubs to go with these tires, I’m guessing? Kind of a compatibility bummer.

It seems a lot of people around here want wider hubs. I noticed the 5” tire is fairly thin, I wonder what it would look like and how it would perform on a slightly wider hub

Shit, how many people have the unobtainium 130mm thane? Ride comparison against that would be interesting. I feel like the 5" would be mostly better across the board.
