DIY Wheels - Hollow Wheels - Very Comfy

I also have a set that my heavy, yet slow and carvy butt is enjoying. Are you using the suspension inserts? i am but want to take them out, but a little worried that they will be too mushy…oh and i am lazy.

These are the race versions I am talking about.

Slow = 20mph, heavy =250 Carvy=slight turns in a wide street.

Do you have any sort of updated shipping time line? As in like an estimate of when it will be completed?

I’m using the Hollow Wheels Pro with suspension inserts but no weights. The only board I have running right now is a Zealot S so I’m using the inserts to try and keep consumption down. I weigh 140lb geared up and run 20-25mph all the time.

The wheels are incredible for both hard carving and going around corners. The grip just never stops, and when they start to lose traction it’s not like a urethane wheel. You can feel the transition from grip to slip and still have complete control to continue your turn without sliding out. I’ve hit an oily road while carving as hard as I could and the wheels gripped well enough for me to recover.

Even with the inserts in, these have been a game changer on DC streets. I dipped a wheel in a pothole I thought for sure would throw me off, but the wheel bounced back up and I was able to stay on the board. They’re awesome at absorbing impacts that come straight on. Riding sidewalks is almost bearable! They aren’t as good over rough surfaces as Cloudwheels though, especially on the blind pedestrian bumps.

I’ve ridden the Hollow Wheels for about 250 miles and they’ve worn down to 99mm and are completely flat now, maybe even have a touch of negative camber. I’m now conserving them for track practice or for when I’m feeling like taking a particularly hard ride instead of dailying them like I have been because I don’t want them to wear out too quickly.

If the Hollow Wheels Comfort exhibit similar characteristics when breaking traction and will last significantly longer, I might have to pick up a set for daily use!

I modified mine successfully by using a drill press.

I used an undersized bit that would clear the kegel holes, put the entire wheel on the table cover side down, and drilled to the depth I needed.

To expand the holes to the size needed, I took only the cover and used a bigger bit to expand the holes drilled earlier.

It took a bit of trial and error and moving the cover around on the table since my drill press is old and shit and wants to walk all over the place, but it ended up working well.

FINALLY got to try my wheels out last night

never seen skate wheels do this, must be a side effect of how damn grippy they are

I reeeaaally like this board. Hollow Wheels look sick on it. Are you using the pro verison or the normal ones?

Thanks! I’m on the pros

I’ve seen a few of the pros chunking like this, guess they aren’t that good for carving since they don’t slide as much.

I see this “chunking” (doesn’t seem like chunking to me) as a sign of excellent grip. I’m not much of a slider so this is great for me haha

I’ve just realized that it was the shadows of those “threads” and not chunks. My bad.

Haha yeah, threads is a good word for it

That pavement looks like it’s designed to murder wheels too

Lol imagine falling on it. I imagine it feels pretty interesting though, like kinda bumpy, but kinda smooth. Gotta be crazy grippy in some directions

Everything starts shipping on the 15th! If domestic, should get it in 3-5 business days. If overseas, it can be as little as 5 days too. It all depends on how fast of carrier shipping speed you selected.

Wow. This made my day. Thank you for the feedback.

The comfort doesn’t have the same gripping experience as the PRO. The comfort is designed for all out comfort but they are very light (lighter than PRO… material density is lower) and have a higher modulus of elasticity, so you do sacrifice some grip, but they feel very, very nimble so I suppose it gives some what of a feeling of high grip. People are so used to heavy wheels that it gives them a little bit of a surprise.

The comfort’s wear resistance is higher than the PRO. It’s just that - if you want very high grip, you will have to sacrifice wear resistance. This is why you see F1 cars on those red tire “soft tires” only last a quarter of the race.

Sorry about this. This is on my to do list. When I made the mold, Evolve and their ABEC was the most popular board out there (this was 3 years ago now) and Kegel wasn’t as popular and there weren’t many long kegel pulleys. But it has grown in popularity by a lot.

The unfortunate truth is that I have to make an entirely new mold to be able to accommodate longer pins and I don’t yet have the savings to afford a new mold. So I am hoping this next inventory allows me to spend the profits back into a new mold and also another bigger version of the Hollow Wheel.

When I am able to get covers with longer pins, I will just sell them at cost for people in your position.

Glad you like them so far! Thanks so much for sticking up for me in the past.

They call this “tire graining” in motorsport. You see this all the time in F1 or any motorsport.

Can I use this on the website? I really like the lighting and the stance with your board. Your board looks really cool too. Very low. I like it.

Yeah absolutely, here’s more pics for ya

I have really enjoyed how light the wheels are. I put Cloudwheels back on my board the other day and it feels so much heavier to carry and carve with. Your wheels are incredibly nimble.

I understand the comfort wheels won’t have nearly as much grip as the Pros. My question was more in reference to the wheels’ behavior after they begin to lose traction. On many urethane wheels, you lose virtually all grip all at once, whereas with the Hollow Wheels Pro, it’s a very progressive transition. Would the comfort wheels behave like urethane or somewhere in between?

How much higher, would you say? From your F1 comparison, I assume it’s quite significant, but I’d like to make sure.

Thanks again for all your hard work to bring these awesome wheels to the community!

It is about 35-45% higher wear resistant. Depends heavily on riding characteristics, but with all being equal the wear resistance is much higher on the Comfort Hollow Wheel.

The PRO is a very special compound when it bleeds off grip. The Comfort doesn’t exhibit this property as much. It’s maybe in the middle of urethane and the PRO, but leaning toward urethane grip characteristics.

Great questions!
