Snell sucks and is outdated, it’s not representative of an actual crash. No one falls head first with 2 identical impacts and rotational forces are some of the most important measurements which snell completely ignores.
Mips is not a certification it’s a technology that can be put in any hemet to reduce rotational forces.
They’re both good, it’s just a slightly different testing methodology. Different forces in different amounts, but at the end of the day they’ll both offer enough protection for what we’re doing.
Yeah 22.06 is great and much better than anything else but to even be allowed to attempt FIM certification you have to pass 22.06 first. It’s much stricter.
I keep it simple; For daily cruising a high quality open face or fox proframe MTB helmet. For anything high speed or higher risk riding I’ll stick to a motorbike helmet.
My number one rule, don’t cheap out on safety equipment.
I tried a TSG Pass and although they’re popular I felt very unsafe wearing it due to the lack of a secure fit and lack of cranium padding.
Motorbike helmet: The AGV Pista is my top pick for high speed and risker routes or simply for cold weather riding. The fit is incredibly secure and comfortable. Only downside is the high cost.
Open face: I use a standard skateboard helmet for cruising and lower speed riding. Keeping things comfortable and cool especially during summer riding. Downside being the lack of facial protection and not rated for high impact crashes.
Alternative: Fox Proframe is my middle ground helmet. I find it to be the best of both worlds.
So would a ScorpionExo R420 be good for daily? Im not racing or anything like that and i am looking for a new full face. the scorpion has a Snell rating as well… Open to any suggestions that is not a tsg.
Right now i have a BELL full face that i bought years ago for electric scooter.
Not true. SNELL is designed for repeated translation impacts, because it was designed for car racing. This results in thicker helmets with a harder shell. ECE is designed for a combination of linear and rotary impacts, because it is designed for people who fall off of motorbikes and tumble on the ground. This results in slimmer helmets with softer shells. The optimal helmet for these 2 use cases are so different that it’s very rare to see a lid that passes both tests.
If you’re planning to wrap your esk8 around a tree, find a SNELL. Otherwise stick with bike stuff.
I’ve been using a Sedici Duale since my last crash, great FOV and airflow. But I think any dual sport helmet will have the same benefits.
EDIT: I would also contend that ECE is not enough. That crash was a backwards fall from 10mph, which knocked me unconscious and gave me a bad enough concussion to keep me in bed for 3 days. I was wearing an ECE 22.05 helmet which came away from the hit with a tiny scratch on the outer shell, and an interior dent in the EPS about the size of a dime. Probably woulda had to smack into a wall at 30mph to get any decent compression out of it. The helmet was still not soft enough to absorb the optimal amount of energy for that crash. I’d say we should be looking at helmets with multilayer foam, and thin composite shells that are designed to crackle.
Ok so don’t do what i do but here is an interesting anecdote.
Rushing out the door to meet up for an indoor garage session i forgot my helmet at home. Decided to keep it super chill and just wear my hard hat -kask zenith 2 - which is a really good rated helmet more than a hard hat but still not a normal half shell or anything.
Lost traction because cars leak oil and i went down heel side hard. Only doing about 15mph. Like everyone stopped to look hard and my head was the first hit. Huge bang from the helmet. Helmet has a suspension harness and impact foam to stay super light and cool but it did an amazing job. I seriously hit the back of my head so hard i could have died if not for the helmet. Was like a whip
The harness connection points had little strain reliefs or shock absorber stiches that pulled and the hard foam cracked. Shell was fine but the hat was trash. I poped up embarrassed but only my pride wounded. A little sore but no worse for the wear ¯_(ツ)_/¯
From the site:
ANSI Z89.1 Type I , Type II - Class E All around protection against impact and penetration including front, rear, and sides.
EN 12492
Protection against side, front and rear impacts
Shock energy absorption capacity (Clauses 4.2.1.2 - front,
4.2.1.3 - lateral, 4.2.1.4 - rear) Penetration (Clause 4.2.2) Retention system strength
(Clause 4.2.3)
Retention system effectiveness
(Clause 4.2.4)
I got another one and it’s my new half shell go to
Yeah, low speed crash and high speed crash are weird with esk8. ECE rating are meant for both, just not sure how “low speed” crash are tested with motorcycle since the way we fall on esk8 are kind of different.
I think 22.05 is quite bad . The new 22.06 certification includes a rotation test and the helmets are tested in slow speeds and high speeds (6 m/s, 7,5 m/s and 8,2 m/s instead of only 7,5 m/s for 22.5) . They have softer shells and thicker foam(maybe 2 layers?)
I think a good bike helmet with mips might be ok too but i have seen so many injuries from tsg helmets that i don’t want to try bike helmets
I only saw New Olders mentioned once briefly in the beginning of this thread. How do you all feel about their avatar V2 with the aramid reinforcements?
Agreed, my TSG pass pro has saved me several times over the years but crashing on dirt is a lot different than asphalt. Got a new olders coming after the last fall.
i used this helmet all last season and agree with both points. it does get hot when you’re at a standstill for a while on hot days but cools off quickly once you get moving. on the heavy side especially if you compare it to a pass but once i got used to the weight, i didn’t notice it very often. i might look at a scorpion covert fx for this season tho
Ik that @haven crashed pretty hard on his TSG, pretty sure it did saved him. TSG also has a program that will give you a discount if you write a story about how it saved you, but the discount would only apply if you buy directly from their website instead of any other distributor. I personally don’t trust TSG enough to justify buying one over a motorcycle helmet.
