I’m curious on how u ride. R u a racer? Or just a casual skater. And what speeds?
On this point too, most DH riders start out with half-shells that are only rated for park use. At my local group’s hill there’s only 3-4 kids with speed caps, the rest are rocking triple-8 or TSG half shells.
Personally I just try to keep up with traffic and be a courteous road user.
So like whatever the speed limit is I guess. Although I don’t do 80km/h on highways, I take the shoulders at 60 for that part. I do tend to cut traffic whenever it’s backed up though.
Ya a lot of downhill guys rock half shells. What’s crazy to me sometimes is that u see some guys breaking 50 in a half shell which scares shit outta me. It is important to note that of pro skaters who rock half shells use downhill specific brands like S1 or TSG. Using a normal helmet like a Triple 8 is often frowned upon
For the moto helmets. Me personally, I think it’s a bit overkill for 90% of eskate. It pains me when I see a dude on a meepo v3 going 15mph and wearing a full CEC rated full face. But in the circumstances of high speed skating and or skating around cars going high speed, it could be more nessary
Thing is, we all start somewhere.
Tru tru. But no one starts going 60mph. Most beginners rarely break 30 which a standard helmet is mostly acceptable for
That may be so, but I’d argue that the protection offered by a downhill helmet is sufficient. Even if crashes are different. They’re designed and tested for many different scenarios. Hitting the back of your head is something most bike helmets are designed for. There is ample protection inside the helmet for various different scenarios, and downhill mountain bikers are often going at an equal velocity to eskate riders.
I’ve come down straight on my head at 20-30 a few times and walked away without any serious injury in a downhill helmet with mips. Now it’s a small test group, I’ll acknowledge that. But with my personal experience I’d argue a downhill helmet is adequate in most situations for most people.
I’d also like to clarify by downhill helmet I am speaking strictly about full face helmets since that is the context of the conversation, in my opinion.
Downhill MTB helmets are also made with even thick padding arnd the dome to accommodate for the more unpredictable nature of falling on a bike. Plus, they’re way cheaper to as they don’t give two shits abt aero
Downhill MTB right?
Mountainboard right?
Downhill mountain bike. I am unaware of any mountain board specific helmets.
saw a racer (Reggie) go down at san francisco electeify expo and hit the back of his head in a pass. he got knocked unconscious and got a small gash in the back of his head. i’ve had similar crashes with motorcycle helmets with at most (and rarely) a minor concussion. personally, i just couldn’t trust the pass after feeling how thin it was and how little protection it looks like it provides.
In my personal experience it really isn’t.
My last fall with a mountainbike downhill helmet I got a concussion and slept till like 4pm the day after, and that wasn’t even a very bad fall.
Since then I switched to ECE moto helmets, and even taking a nasty highside fall where I hit the helmet pretty bad, that ended up being a very minor concussion. Had multiple hard falls in ECE helmets where the helmet hit the ground. In my experience they simply offer way better impact protection.
EUC or eskate?
Not to be that guy but how are u gaging the magnitude of the falls? So many variables go into how people fall (such as: putting your hands behind u to take impact or hitting ur butt before your head). Also I feel it’s important to note that while, yes ECE moto helmets are generally more protective, not all DH MTB helmets are rated as equally, so making such generally statement gets a tad bit iffy. But still, good on u for finding the helmet that works best
It’s a combination of subjective feel and what caused the fall. Like a wobble at 35 km/h I consider less serious. Still that’s what cracked my decent quality but not high end mountainbike helmet and gave me a concussion. I was barely able to ride home and don’t even remember most of the way back home.
Wobble at 55 km/h in full bindings should be a good bit more serious but due to the moto helmet I still escaped that without any signs of concussion, even though I hit my head so much that the visor and ventilation cover parts of the helmet got detached and scattered in a 10 meter radius.
My most recent fall was due to loosing grip trail braking while turning one way while racing, overcorrecting on a slipperier patch the other way then regaining traction with the board a bit sideways and eating it at around 40-45 km/h. Felt like catching the heel side edge on a snowboard especially since I’m fully locked into bindings. Knocked the back of my already comprised moto helmet on the ground with a lot of force and had a headache for maybe an hour. Was fine afterwards. I am 100% sure I wouldn’t have been fine if I had a less protective helmet on that time.
I’ve been on the hunt for helmets lately and I found the Shoei Ex-zero to be a really nice option for FOV. It’s not up to current European standards but is dot certified. I’m about to buy it after I move house
Great helmet brand. I had a snell rated one from them that was awesome.
I have the shoei glamster. I like it because it is one of the lightest helmets with great fov and latest European ece standards. It has a weird fit because it is retro so you have to try it before you buy it.
Yeeesh. Ya for racing mabye not. Mostly bc of the bindings. Me beings trained to jump of my board and slide would prolly eat shit and bust my skull too if I had to be strapped down to a board. Stay safe out there!
