Best full face helmet?

Because I have a small bean, I was able to snag a carbon/kevlar downhill MTB MIPS helmet from 100% for roughly $200 on eBay. It ended up being a bit too small, so I ordered size medium padding from the company to replace the small padding, and now it’s perfect. It’s fairly light at 2.35 pounds. I prefer to wear it over my half shells. I like open face helmets since I don’t ride when it’s cold out.

I usually ride in a pair of prescription safety glasses that I got from Zenni for about $75 if I remember right. The shielding around the sides does a good job of keeping the wind out of my eyes.

Was thinking on my last ride that I should have paid extra for photochromic coating, but at the time I was only planning to wear them in my garage. :slight_smile:

So I got the cheaper ones from aliexpress,
well they look and fit good, they actually change color and are pretty clear when they are supposed too
but their curvature and poorly treated glass catch light reflexions in a disturbing way (at least for someone who isn’t use to wear glasses anymore) haven’t have felt confident enough to ride with them on

so does anyone know why the tsg pass is not certified for motorcycle etc? is it money or quality?

It’s not really a motorcycle helmet from what I can see. The foam is much thinner compared to even a full face mountain bike helmet. Check this reply for a good comparison.

If I had to guess, It probably wouldn’t pass motorcycle requirements since it’s really not designed for that. It’s got ASTM F1952 “certification” (not sure if it’s one of those self assessments or was actually 3rd party tested), which is plenty for me considering that a lot of mountain bike helmets my friends have worn and crashed with all have the same rating.

Just wanted to make a PSA for folks looking for a full face helmet for ESK8. It has been said many times that TSG Pass provides inadequate protection. Since I haven’t read much about the new Pass 2.0 and it is supposed to have improved protection including the chin bar, I thought I would give it a try. Don’t! Just don’t.

The chin bar is cosmetic and offers little protection. I tried it on and pushed the chin bar towards me to simulate faceplanting, and it did not take any effort at all for it to smash against my mouth. All my much lighter mountain biking helmets don’t do this. Also, the TSG has essentially no padding for the top of your head.

I cannot fathom how the heck this helmet can be rated for downhill helmet as claimed on their website. Thankfully, I am down only $10 for return shipping and hopefully will be keeping my teeth. Bought an ECE rated motorcycle helmet at the same time to A-B test them and there is no comparison in protection for slightly more weight. In terms of protection, I would rate motorcycle helmet >> well ventilated mountain bike full-face helmet > TSG > half-shell bicycle helmet. It’s still a helmet, better than no helmet, but you need to lower your expectations about the full face part. I just wanted to share my finding with you all.

That you’re wearing a trash bag completes this ensemble perfectly! I also have a tsg pass 2 but im gonna reform here. Gonna get smart and buy an actual motorcycle helmet for next season

Definitely need some kind of compression at the back of your head for esk8, which the pass has none of… I had a pretty solid high side recently, and i didn’t feel right for a week.

Long time downhill skater, proponent of the pass, and person who seeks to talk abt the pass’s design choices here👋. And I can say with confidence, DO NOT USE THE PASS FOR EUC OR MOST ESKATE PLEASEEEEE.
The reason the Pass, Pass pro, and pass 2.0 are rated for downhill is because they provide protection where needed FOR DOWNHILL. If you watch downhill any high level downhill skate videos, you’ll see that downhill skaters, and PEV riders fall completely differently. When a downhill skater falls, 9 times out of 10, they slide on their butt, kneepads, or shoes. 9.99/10 times, they catch themselves with their slide gloves. The few times that downhill skaters hit their heads, it’s low impact and on the crown of their heads (which is where the pass provides the most protection. As for the chin bar, you are correct, it’s not very protective. But it’s not cosmetic, it’s for aerodynamics. The pass is a helmet specifically designed to strike a fine balance between aero and protection specially attuned to downhill, hence the “Not for use on motorized vehicles” on the inside of the helmet. If a downhill skater was bad enough to fall on their face enough to experience jaw damage, they shouldn’t be skating at a speed where aero is a problem in the first place.
As for use on EUC, there is ofc the famous video of the EUC rider face planting and getting a skull fracture. To keep this brief, just don’t use a Pass for EUC. A fall where you head is 6.5 feet above the ground, at 40 mph, directly onto your forehead will compromise any helmet, especially one that clearly says on the inside “Not for use on motorized vehicle”.

Honestly you’re better off with a downhill helmet or motorsport helmet. I haven’t tried a tag pass pro, their sizing doesn’t seem to accommodate for my large noggin. But I’ve heard they’re not terribly comfortable, and as far as safety don’t offer as much protection as something with mips or a dot rating.

I’m curious tho, isn’t a moto helmet overkill for most skating? As far as I know(not sure on specifics) a lot of moto head injuries happen at low speed falls(under 30). Typically in intersections on low siding corners. Moto helmets are made for falls at moto speed, hence thicker plastic and stiffer foam. Aren’t you concerned at all about the stiffness of the helmet when compared to a downhill MTB helmet?

Downhill crashes are very different to PEV crashes.

Go with a motorcycle helmet. It’s either appropriate or overkill, and those are both better options than “not enough”

I’ve spent 3 years riding in an Icon Airform. Best helmet I’ve ever used. Crashes of any sort can be walked off with it.

(Congrats on first post!) ya I totally agree. Downhill skating helmets are worse for anything that’s not downhill skating. Although I will say that my Pass 2.0 has been WAAAY more comfortable than my 2018 pass. Also build quality is better and foam is thicker
