Beginner Question Thread! 2023 Edition

I would argue DIY esk8 is dead, premade china boards ar thriving. Also, blame the unreliable remotes for some known people to switching to unfancy no UI remote.

Hey guys,

Bought a custom kaly board board last year. It was running good until I threw it in a trunk. Now it doesn’t have enough torque to get me moving while on it. The board will still go with nobody on it and will still hit close to top speed when lifting up the board. For whatever reason it goes a little bit better in reverse.

Is this likely a loose connection?

Also, with the bolts being so close to the trucks and motors, I recall it being a bitch and a half to tighten them up. Any suggestions on a tool for a tight spot?

TIA

Did you have smart reverse on? Sounds like the board is in reverse and you’re going forward with the smart reverse feature

I don’t believe so, I have a Hoyt puck and restored default settings on my Vesc. That did not fix it. That’s as far as I got. Went to esk8con and said I’m done looking at it (after a couple months here) lol

Eta: when I say it’ll go with me on it in reverse, I mean less than 5mph which is a drastic drop

Did you change modes on the puck by accident? The lowest mode gives barely any throttle signal, so depending on the board, it will either be really slow or possibly not really move you at all. I thought I broke my board for about a day because I’d never touched the mode button on purpose, and somehow ended up in the low mode. Reverse works fine because the modes only affect forward so you can still brake well. It sounds exactly like that to me.

Anything else I should try before just pulling the trigger on a vx4? I got another vx2 receiver from a guy on the forum after I broke the other one, I wired and soldered the wires tx and rx, based on the tenkas and receiver diagram to line up correctly, it has not paired, maybe there was not enough wire for the connection to go though on either of the tx or rx wires? Or more likely, it’s a vx2 receiver for a different model…? Is there a way to update firmware?

RIP

You’re gonna need somebody reasonably well versed in vesc shenanigans to set up your board again

Where are you located?

Vegas, I restored them to the settings where it was working fine

In general, is that a no no?

As in you restored a backup of known good settings? That is usually a good thing.

Yes, that being said, I don’t really know what I’m looking at on my Vesc to know what’s happening

Please get a new receiver and or remote and new wiring loom. No amount of money is worth risking riding a board with such shoddy connections all around that can lead to unexpected cutouts and accidents.

bindings… lean back. balance.
use brakes/thrust to help like a moto.
practice practice practice.
practice more.
enjoy the practice… because you’ll need to practice more.

So… Program the IMU?

18s and over 7kw per motor so… Not a power issue.

Clearly a skill issue haha

Doing a wheelie doesn’t take much skill at all. It’s the controlling it part that is hard.
