Beginner Question Thread! 2023 Edition

I didn’t say the fire was their fault, I just thought they were busy rebuilding and not yet in a position to be building packs.

We are back to work, cutom battery packs depending on the layout and size aswell as cell choice are a 7 day lead time

Good to hear you’re back at it.

on that tab, it should show approximate for all canbus vescs. If you go a page up, it shows info for just that local esc.

Hey,
I will be making a DIY e-skateboard (e-mountainboard, if I find a board that is affordable) and I’ve been looking for reliable budget motor and VESC manufacturers, but haven’t been able to find conclusive information. Any suggestions on reliable manufacturers or even specific parts? I don’t plan on pushing the parts too hard, but would prefer something that won’t kick the bucket at the first excuse.

Because I am on a budget (16500 Czech Crowns = ~650 euro [ideally a bit less]), I am considering only using a single motor and VESC and 2 10Ah turnigy graphene professional 4s lipos in series. I plan on hopefully upgrading in the future.

Any motor/VESC/battery suggestions/advice are greatly appreciated (:
I also hope I am posting this in the correct spot

Hello buddy,
Just wanna ask regarding enertion 2.1, the charge wont past 50%, you think this is a battery problem or bms?
I cannot post now because i just joined the forum.
TIA

The BMS is part of the battery, and the only way to know whether it’s an issue with the cells is to tear into it and go poking around with a multimeter.

I saw some post here saying that it just needed to be charge long to balance the battery voltage.
You think that is one possible answer?

If the cells are unbalanced, leaving the battery on the charger for a while can give the BMS time to balance them, yes.

Depending on the battery capacity and the balance current of the BMS and how unbalanced the cells are, this can take anywhere from a few hours to several days.

one common reason for not charging all the way is that the battery pack is “out of balance”

one pgroup charges up faster than the others and the bms stops the charge to prevent that group from over voltage.

the common reason for a battery being in this condition is that something is wrong with the battery.

the pgroup in question is damaged and no longer has as much capacity as the others. ( internal cell damage, bad welds, … )

the pgroup balance wires have poor connections so bad readings are confusing the bms.

none of these are actually fixed by “rebalancing”

you can however attempt to rebalance and then keep an eye on the per pgroup levels as you discharge and charge to confirm

but odds are something else needs fixing.

I am very new here, and I know that you guys have probably answered these questions so many times but I can’t find an answer to my exact question. In my case, I’m building an emtb.
What wires or extensions do you guys use to connect a vesc with an xt90 connector to a top mounted battery box in the center of the board?

Also, would idea motor mounts fit tb 6384 motors?

Depends on the amps pulled, but assuming you think you need an XT90, I would say 6awg stranded silicone wire.

6 awg is enough? I see a lot of people saying 10 or 12 awg.

Heres a helpful chart for wire size guides. Keep in mind that battery current is lower than motor current, and you only pull peak power from your motors for very short periods of time. This chart is for continus current.

Thanks bro

No problem. Also, XT90s are rated for 90A Peak, 40A Continuous, and are recommended to be used with 10 awg wire. 6 awg doesn’t really fit well on an xt90 connector. You could go with a QS series connector if you need more amps.

6awg is larger than 10awg is larger than 12.

Things I’ve done successfully:

  • put more than 120A through an XT90
  • used 6AWG with both sides of an XT90, with the caps.
