Beginner Question Thread! 2023 Edition

Thank you.

Any idea how/ why this error pops up on vesc tool?

I just downloaded the newest version of VESC tool so I don’t get how this is possible. Also even with the 6.00 version it shouldn’t have been possible since I bought it off someone in decemeber and I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t have access to unreleased firmware.

running a unity with 23.xxx firmware?

Foc box unity ver 1.1 I think with who knows what firmware.

Wait I think I found it. VESC tool claims it is on v23.46

very likely 23.46.

Go into the “firmware” tab. Look in the bottom left, there it should show you the firmware that is installed.

Edit: you found it

That is the Original firmware used on the unity (before it got merged into the official vesc tool)

And since 23 is higher than 6, vesc tool says it’s not supported.

You need to flash the current vesc tool firmware on the unity

Yes, it is that. I just want my damn remote to work with it :weary: :sob: I don’t want to use the default remote i was sent with it that has no screen but also pretty sure the acceleration curve setting on it would have me on my ass.

It claims that 6.02 firmware is supported and loaded, should I flash that to it? Just don’t want to brick it by putting the wrong thing on it

whatever the latest vesc tool offers in terms of firmware is what’s supported yes.

I personally still use 5.2 with my unity. I won’t update for a while.

6.02 is the brand new firmware release from the last few days i believe.

You should also be able to use the archive and flash older firmware if you want.

If you run the newest version, you are a beta tester, so it’s up to you to decide whether you want to use mostly untested firmware or not.

One it’s been out for a long time, there has been plenty of time for many community members to test it out. If you use a new release, this isn’t the case.

for most Vescs

Trampa esc most likely got all the testing.

@ApproachCautiously

I did have the 6.0 tool running but tried to get the latest version to fix that error message and maybe fix the vx4 remote not working. I have no experience with vescs though so maybe I’ll try and flash 5.2 since that is what you’re on and I wouldn’t be testing it

checked the RX/TX cables? (or whatever isn’t working)

Yeah, everything looks fine on the wiring and it connects without issues. Just won’t spin up the motors at all. The old shit remote worked fine so I know the motors themselves work fine. Probably should have switched to the old remote and double check the motors work instead of trying to do it through vesc tool but :person_shrugging: too late now

I’m downloading the archive now which sounds like it would include the old firmware I hope. If not I’m wasting time with my subpar download speeds.

you need to do the remote wizard.

That isn’t a thing on my VESC tool. There is a nrf quick pair wizard but it doesn’t even work. unless it is the setup input option which has the dumbest symbol next to it

yes

It claims I need the latest firmware for it. So much for it now being backward compatible for all firmware :weary:

I flashed 5.02 onto it now since the download finished so rip the stock firmware. I can now run motor detection and have the shit scared out of me because VESC tool did not warn me that it would make the motors create a loud alarm sound before spinning them up i am easily spooked

oh and now my problem is my remote options isn’t listed?

The vx4 can run in ppm but I’m using uart mode

dismiss the that prompt and try again a few times

it doesn’t list remotes. It lists connection types.

it does. At least it always did. Maybe not worded the way you want it to be.

Nah it just told me they would spinup and to move stuff away. 0 warning about an alarm sound while the motor wasn’t even moving

My remote type isn’t there though. that is the problem. It is not a nunchunk, nor an ADC controller.

Edit: flipsky only has information on their site for using the PPM mode which is not very useful. And then a guide for controlling multiple VESCS also with PPM mode only

just looked at a video. Yeah it is worded differently - it just talks about spinning.

Can’t make everyone happy :man_shrugging:t2:

i would also advise you to watch video guides of the setup.

this one for example mentions the noises

(though it’s a mobile setup)

Yes, I’ve done that already and it changed nothing. the remote still doesn’t do a thing and doing that does not give me the correct remote option for the setup wizard
