Beginner Question Thread! 2023 Edition

I’m having a bit of trouble with my metr pro module, as I understand it I’m supposed to plug it in excluding the AD3 pin (the connector it came with is 7 pin but still fits in the 8pin uart port when offset by 1 pin) this seems to work as it flashes blue and green when I power on my stormcore but I can’t seem to connect via Bluetooth, I’m struggling to find troubleshooting info on the Bluetooth connection itself, anybody have experience with Metr Bluetooth troubles?

Can VESC4 do DC control @13s? Is it just FOC that’s limited to 11s on v4?

I’m planning on building a decent battery pack on a budget and have settled on two options, 12s12p A123 26650 lifepo4 cells from batteryclearinghouse or 12s1p 31ah lifepo4 pouch cells from batteryhookup. I’m sort of leaning towards the 26650’s because they are proven to be excellent performers but I’m afraid I may end up with heavily cycled cells that will sag and become unbalanced in a pack. The pouch cells are uncycled and the spec sheet looks fantastic but it seems that nobody has done any real world testing on them. What do you guys think I should go with?

Would you consider lion? Are you set on the lifepo? If so i would go with the 12p, i think it would sag less if i reckon correctly.

I thought battery hookup had the 123 cells as well…i guess it depends on if you want to risk the uncertainty could be cool.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a spot welder so 18650 cells are pretty much out of the question. The 26650 cells come spot welded in 12s4p configs so I pretty much just have to solder the packs together.

Interesting… ill have to check out the batteries you are mentioning and get back to you. One thing id say is a spot welder can be cheap and then the rest could be lion cells. I do ponder having such a big pack like 12s 12p, theres a lot more batteries, welds, wires, etc more could go wrong but thats just one side.

Hmm those look nuts. Idk if soldering is sufficient for that many amps i really dont know though

I did some research on some other A123 pouch cells and other people report that their 20ah cells barely sag even when pulling hundreds of amps so if the batteryhookup 31ah cells are anything like those they should work great for me. I won’t be pulling anywhere near those kinds of currents though so I should be good with attaching the tabs with solder or busbars. Thanks for the help.

LiFePO4 are good batteries, but they are very heavy. About twice as heavy per kilometer of range as li-ion. But just about everything else about them is better. Except for that one major thing.

Any issues running with one motor being detected with hall sensors and the other detected as sensorless? I’m going to try manual detection on the sensorless one, or possibly try swapping the JST connector.

Would having one sensored and one not have any effect on the UART readings going to a Davega? Not getting smooth/consistent readouts for speed etc on the Davega and not sure if it’s related.

Edit: I’ll add this is a Stormcore 60D v5.3 and TB 6380 motors.

Is it safe for my ESCs to connect to the battery separately, or will that fry something since they have a CAN bus connection? I have an AS-150 I could use, but I would prefer just 2 XT-90S

I’m using 2x Trampa VESC 6 mk3 btw

Afaik it doesn’t matter as long as you only connect canh and canl

Only one, but I want to pull like 80A per ESC so just one XT-90 isn’t enough

You shouldn’t have issues. Don’t run small-gauge ground wires between the ESCs, as @glyphiks mentioned.
