Any esk8ters in Hong Kong? Stay safe

My online chinese teacher is from hongkong and she sent her family money to move in with her. They were in the center of it.

Probably a wise move, I wouldn’t want to be there if the chinese military is ordered to march in.

Stay safe HKers. Just heard about how much worst it’s getting and police brutality and potential police murdering and raping protesters?!?

Second this. I really loved the city during the two trips I had over there. Breaks my heart to see how things going along at the moment.

I don’t like what’s happening either. But I don’t particularly like seeing gory videos of people getting stabbed and shot on the internet too without any warnings…

Like whats up with that?

For the record, big cities in China are on par with Hong Kong and Taiwan. I’m not sure where the generalization that China is suffering as a whole came from but if you go to Beijing, GuangDong, or Shanghai, those places are thriving. They also tend to be friendly to foreigners too. That said, major cities tend to be Westernized so maybe that’s why. You definitely need to be careful of the smaller cities that tend to keep to themselves but that’s true of any country.

Feel like its the opposite here
Small towns/small city = nice people
Big city’s = hey fuck you

In the states? Can confirm :stuck_out_tongue: Having lived in Omaha, San Diego, L.A., and now Dallas, the smaller cities and communities were definitely more friendly than the bigger ones

Liu? aren’t you Asian? how did Omaha treat you? I got a lot of “remarks” in New Orleans. Stood out like a sore thumb

I’m ashamed to say I’m very unaware of all the history and tension going on.

To make things worse I’m watching a YouTube video right now hoping to catch up on decades of conflict in 10 minutes.

American history is stupidly America-centric :expressionless:

Wow the legco voting is new to me. That’s shocking. Was there no option for the extradition bill to only be Taiwan and not all of China? Does Taiwan have specifically tighter restrictions from mainland China than Hong Kong?

Now I know why the students are such a force in these protests. It’s the young generation’s future that is on the chopping block for 2047.

It’s far more likely now than it was 100 years ago

I think this is the start of what will be the birth of a democratic China

I want that to be true as well but can you imagine the teething pains? Bloodshed

Taiwan has a military, though it is obviously more symbolic than practical against modern China. On the other hand, the United States sells fighters and destroyers to them and effectively “protects” Taiwan in the process (without recognizing Taiwan as a nation). It is very different than Hong Kong’s situation.

Man, I really want to take a trip there soon (been there twice) and need to ride with @haggyboard.timo next time.

My friend from Ohio is teaching in China and took 3 trips to Hong Kong this year. “Tear gas is worse than I expected” was one of his recent posts. :joy: :man_facepalming:

Haha yeah I’m 100% Chinese and I definitely stood out during my time in Omaha. I was the only Asian kid in just about every group with the exception of family friends. I was young at the time so I don’t remember any remarks but I feel like I was lucky enough to never encounter the unsavory type.

Oh wait, I just remembered that my parents and I got robbed at gunpoint but I don’t think that was due to us being Asian :stuck_out_tongue:
