XT90 or XT60 (serious)

So sines the unity I keep seeing people been so called advocates of the XT60 for most builds with out providing much fact or documentashio to justify it apart from that’s what FOCBOX unity uses it. This is what iv found out so fare

XT60
Continues Current 30amps
Momentary Current 60A (burst)
Max cable size AWG 12 (41A)

XT90
Constant Current 45A
Momentary Current 90A (burst)
Max cable size 10AWG (55A)

most common battery 30Q 4P 15A x 4 = 60A (20A x 4 = 80A)

Now knowing the spec would you use a XT90 or XT60

  • XT60
  • XT90

Whoops, voted wrong but XT90

Note 41A @ 12awg is rated for minimum run length of 1 meter. We don’t run cables these lengths. And it is also possible to attach 10awg to XT60. XT90 has the benefit of antispark. Or expecting continuous currents over 60A. By continuous, more than a few seconds.

I used to be in the “10AWG, XT90, sensored” camp but after a few years I have started to much prefer 12AWG and XT60 for power connectors (with cable ties to prevent rattling apart), and MR60 for motor phase connectors with no sensor wires at all.

xt 60 is just that much smaller, so it’s more practical to make it fit in some tight spaces.

Also if you go by the spec sheet, you should also replace it every 1000 plugs… These are very conservatively rated numbers by the mfg, if they rated these following proper IEEE guidelines, strict rules on temperature, voltage drop, resistance etc that brings up those numbers. Those numbers are rated at levels where there is absolutely 0 chance of failure, then half of that.

You wont see much streetboards running over 40A constant - mostly even under 20A with 10s on “normal” terrain. If you live in SF or South Germany with nicer hills, you pull more if you fire that hill up.
But then you´re mostly on an Allterrain or a Mountainboard - then you´re better with a XT90 to stay a bit cooler.

XT60 test at 200A. fails in 10 seconds… Now tell me how many people hold 200A current for 10 seconds…

Btw that guy did a similar test for XT90. The XT90 got hot enough to desolder itself at 300A. Use those numbers as you see fit.

I use to go on that idea but after opening a case and barely able to pull the connector apart because of how hot it was and flexible after messing around in a hill I blamed my soldering so reflowed then but had no real affect if it’s the AWG12 cable or the XT60 :man_shrugging:

As for AWG10 in a XT60 it so tight can’t really tin it beforehand and not really enough space for the solder to flow well if you do get it in is likely to just end in bad joints for people.

No such thing as not enough room for solder to flow well… A wetted fillet is a wetted fillet :open_mouth:

If you know how to solder… you don’t need to find anything beforehand to make a perfect joint.

I use XT-90s only if both the battery and ESCs are capable of more than 60A continuous. For all my builds so far that has never been the case.

How many amps were you pulling? And is this a legit amass xt60? There are a good amount of knockoffs out there that absolutely suck. On a 4P battery? A 12awg wire should be able to carry that current with very aggressive riding and be warm to the touch at best…

I mean honestly at the end of the day, use what you want. If you have the room for 10awg or 8awg and xt90 or bigger, then why not… If you’re at a lack of room and trying to squeeze a connector in, take a look at the tests and decide if a smaller one will work for you. If you’re gonna run 4wd on 8-12p pack, probably don’t use an xt60…

Hovering around the 40-50 battery amps on hills have been up to 60amp but that was only for a few seconds. Crusing at top speed 6 amps PU Flat good road
Used XT90 AWG8- In to dule XT60 AWG12
Works grate

Using XT90-XT60 adaptor on a dule ESC XT60 and cable got prity warm couldn’t hold it for more than a few seconds. Had a few fake ones thay feel different when plunging together and the plastics melts so much quicker when soldering I avoid them and ordered them from hobby king now as they been parity reliable for genuine ones

 so much this

Mabe I just ride hard pulling amps 10s4p Pu good roads I get Just over 10miles Ish until the soft cut off is bothering me to much 3v hards at 2.7

3p gets me 6-7ish always seemed low presumes it was my low gearing and lots of stop starting

Can someone link a legit source for xt60s and xt90s in the US?

Looking to pick up a handful but I don’t want to end up with garbage clones/fakes

Not sure about USA (if you are from there). In EU we use:

https://eu.mouser.com/

Thanks for reminding me about Mouser, im sure they take care to only stock legit ones

For sure it will be genuine Amass connectors.

Oddly enough I cant find one made by Amass on there

Theres ONE connector in stock by DFRobot… but I cant be sure if its real or not

Unless Amass falls under a different manufacturer?

To digikey I go :man_shrugging:
