That was so fucked up. Really messed up a lot of those riders. I don’t even like cycling but still didn’t find that a bit funny.
Lots of comments already, but EUC Rider is in the wrong here. If you’re riding in a group of motorcycles you ride staggered, if you’re planning on positioning for a maneuver you always mirror/Shoulder check. I think that the same rules would apply here as well.
As for the riding too fast for the Lacroix guy - Lets assume that he has to stop. If they’re going under the speed limit and have the capability of stopping before hitting the crosswalk, they aren’t at fault for “going too fast” since if they’re at or under the speed limit and are capable of stopping they have done nothing wrong imo.
now that all being said, in most states; If you rear end someone you’re almost always at fault unless you can prove that you didnt do so out of negligence. In this scenario I’d bet that it would be considered no-fault and neither would have a claim against the other.
nah, we were all over it
i was right behind, starbucks went flying too!
I just know that is a law, you can google it - I haven’t gotten a ticket for it, my dad did once but that was by a traffic camera, for rolling over the line. Very dumb
Stop sign running is “$238” according to Google.
Did the EUC do something wrong? yes.
Did the Lacroix rider have a responsibility to ride in a fashion not to be a danger to others? also yes.
the Lacroix was going way faster than the other riders, and was approaching a red light. ultimately hitting the EUC quite possibly save the Lacroix’s life. At the speed he was going, he would have been under a car in about 1/2 second. Don’t ever ride faster in traffic than you can safely stop or dodge – that’s true of motorcycles, bicycles, anything that can’t tank an accident.
I’m very reluctant to participate in group rides, the combo of novices plus ‘hotshots’ is a great way to have crap like this video happening.
Another way of looking at it, the accident probably is the fault of the ride organizer – If they didn’t establish rules about red lights, or how to ride near the novices(the euc rider looked like a fairly new rider), then the accident is ultimately on them.
As has been mentioned, apparently they run reds in that group all the time
I’m sure there are people who are reluctant to run reds though - that probably causes a lot of awkward moments. I personally would avoid it.
i don’t think its fair to blame the organizer, since there is only so many times u can tell someone not to do something, then it still happen. there is just no way to prevent it from happening, at least from the organizer side.
Yeah and ultimately it isn’t the organizers responsibility to keep everyone in check. It’s impossible with that many people
The most people I’ve ridden with is like 12 or so and my head was on a swivel the entire time watching people lol
I argue the ride organizer, and only ‘probably’ since we don’t have enough info.
the behavior of the other riders after the accident argues that there was no ride briefing or what to do if something happens. It’s really something that should be done, and I haven’t seen any groups that do it.
I think I might write up what I think is a good group ride rules and post a new thread. It’s a thing the scooter (vespa-type, not stand-on) clubs I ride with do, and it prevents a lot of issues.
however, in this case, we were the stragglers, and about a 1/4 mile from the front, but we got a “traffic hole” punched for us by them
and this was about 10-15 miles in, so the expectations were quite well set on how the group rides
good to hear there was organization!
Stopping at red lights simply isnt practical. It keeps you around the most amount of cars. Cars=Death.
The safest red light running method is parade style. When the light turns yellow, someone stops in the intersection while the rest of the group passes through. That’s how the most responsible group rides do it in NYC.
If you stop at all red lights and wait for them to turn green you may as well be driving a car.
All of this is assuming it’s safe to go through.
Interesting, I agree with your reasoning, but I would have to feel that it is all situational.
I guess if you can’t all fit in a bike lane or if there isn’t one, yeah, stopping is bad.
Never been on something of that scale or with that much traffic
ya that’s how we do it as well in sf
on turns someone zooms ahead and stops traffic while we rip through
on straights if someone makes the yellow, we just keep going
we also frank nevks left and right at intersections to make sure there arent any cars speedin on down
I was just about to say, people in california tend to slam on the gas as soon as its green lol
Gotta have a stopper I presume
Bike lane = death at high speed. We are going too fast. The velocity difference between us and the bikers using it is too much. Too dangerous. We deserve to be on the road just as much as a bunch of boomers in cars.
Any old fuck that gets mad at a 20 person group ride for causing traffic should see how much more space 20 cars takes up.
You must have more bikers where you ride then
I see maybe one every 5 rides
Probably only passed bikers less than 10 times when in bike lanes
This and the bike lane is usually a thin, debris-covered, second thought of a road. It is often blocked, used by pedestrians, etc.
IMO if you can go the speed limit you have the same rights as cars and can use the road. This country needs to realize that it’s been the auto industry’s bitch for almost 100 years now. Suburbs shouldnt exist.
Anyways, ill get off my soap box
Lol fair enough, surprising how different it is
Would be fun to ride other places
esk8 is road legal here
if we go road we go with traffic/speed limit or under, if in bike lane, do bike lane shit, and don’t go on highways and you’re good!
