Around 2002 I tried a huge board from a sporting goods store that had a test track in the parking lot. I’m pretty sure it used lead acid batteries, it was gigantic. Too expensive from my broke college student budget.
2015 I got a tiny Acton esk8 and was hooked going 10mph
My ESK8 Journey started during Covid in 2020. I was going stir crazy due to the lockdowns and I needed to get out of the house. ESK8 “checked a lot of boxes” for me. I was able to walk outside my house, and start riding from my front door (without having to get into a car and drive somewhere to ride). I was also about to ride alone at anytime I wanted. Sometimes, I would just go out and ride for 20 minutes in between work conference calls. I started-out with a Meepo V3 for $329 to see if I liked it. Then I got a Wowgo AT2 (still a great board, especially with street wheels), and then I found this site and I started building my own boards. It’s been a great journey so far and I still love the fact that I can ride anytime. With most of the other sports I participated in in the past, I had to rely on other people showing-up, had to drive to the sport, etc. Plus, the technology of ESK8 is interesting too.
My esk8 journey started in 2014, and then I forgot about skateboards until 2020, when I joined here and bought a BKB duo.
I don’t think the hobby really stuck the first time because the options for parts were pretty shitty back then. Boosted boards were sick, but also quite expensive. $2k was a tough price point for me to wrap my head around at the time (little did I know that I would be spending far more than that a few years later). VESC was just beginning development as a DIY post on the endless sphere forum. Esk8 was more of electric modded skateboards, vs what it is today of purpose built PEVs.
The yuneec ego was an ok commuter board for getting to work, but riding at 14mph got boring very fast.
I joined endless sphere electric skate forum November 19, 2014
I don’t have a car, esk8 has been the only thing to get me back and forth from where I need to go without fail every time, I think pevs/last mile vehicles are truly better than cars depending on the scenario. For me most definitely.
Started with an Evolve bamboo GT around February 2017. I remember my parents had a $200 limit on my bank account and didn’t want me to get an eskate so the day I turned 18 I went to the bank, removed the debit limit on my account and dropped way too much on that board. It threw me off 2 or 3 times because Evolve but I probably put 2000 miles on it, I would do full discharges twice a day in college at UCSB and then sold it because I was worried something might break and cost a ton to replace on a board that I was realizing kinda sucks. Junior year I got a Boosted dual just because I missed it and that was actually a good little board until my battery got the RLOD and bricked itself. Sold off the parts and haven’t had a board for years until a couple months ago. I always wanted a Lacroix, I thought they looked good, had good range and more power than I would ever really need but even used ones were pricey. I like building things so I figured I should just build something based on a lacroix deck. Built the battery and assembled it all and it is such a good thing to be back on a board.
Been into longboarding for about 15 years, got a Onewheel GT September '22, had to take a break for some torn ligaments and got 4 wheels under me about 6 months ago. Just ordered a much nicer board because I tend to dive headfirst into the deep end on everything I do.
I got my Onewheel Pint around mid-2019, still have it today at around 3500 miles. Upgraded to a Meepo Hurricane at the start of 2022, put around 2k miles on that before it finally kicked the bucket, and now I’m on a DIY! 2300 miles on it so far with nothing broken on it. Probably knocking on wood here before my wallet dies again and I end up having to fix something on it. I also ended up getting a zealot s somewhere along the way, it has a few issues but still running well.
This was actually my first board but I had rubber at wheels, this hub board was good for an honest 36 mph up hill, but one day I got it too hot and killed a hub.
I ended up giving it to a member here because I sold them an eco Mobil et that works fine when I sent it but in transit,1 wheel stoped working,I gave him the AE3 deck and battery to convince him I wasn’t ripping him off. I think in the end he was satisfied, but I learned a lot and lost my ass on that sale. However your reputation is worth quite a few hundreds of dollars because once it’s in question, you ain’t selling shit
Somewhere between 2013 and 2016. It looks like I bought my last kick board in 2013 and my first VESC (4.12) in 2016. But I’d been building my own VESC’s (4.10) somewhere between those two - probably 2015
