Wheel comparison thread!

Hehe - just take whatever duro they advertise and +8, and there you have it - the true rating. I think Boas at 83A is true rating though…

I must try them out first… should be interesting to see the effect

Haha why +8 tho?

As long as the wheel isn’t rotating so fast as to not have time to rebound to its original shape by the time it meets the road again it will be back to its original shape and be compressible again based on its hardness level alone. Similarly if u have a hard wheel with high rebound it’s not going to feel softer. Hardness alone determines hardness. Rebound and hardness tests are testing different things.

If you can link something explaining how to understand it differently please do.

Generally all china duro ratings are measured roughly +8 harder than what they advertise… if they put up the true Durometer ratings, no one would buy their wheels for esk8s. It’s tough for them to obtain pure polyurethane formulas for cheap, and sell wheels at half the price and still make a decent profit.

Where’s the data to back this up? I agree that generally speaking, china thane is harder than what’s rated but to +8 seems arbitrary

I’ll make a best to worst list of what wheels i’ve tried in terms of comfort

  • 8" MBS pneumatic knobby tyres
  • Trampa 6.5" urban threads on Superstars
  • Bergmeisters
  • Foamies 120mm
  • Torqueboards 110mm 78A
  • Red Boa Constrictors 100mm 83A
  • Abec Reflys 107mm 74A
  • Trampa Gummies 125mm
  • Abec Reflys 97mm 74A
  • Caguamas 85mm 77A
  • Caguamas 85mm 80A
  • Kegels 80mm 80A
  • Abec Clones 97mm
  • Leafboard wheels 75mm (prebuilt board)
  • Fucken Raptor R spec crossover wheels 100mm

If you are looking for the most comfortable urethane wheel, go for Foamies or the TB 110mm wheels. It’s as big as a urethane wheel can get, and is soft. I’ve tried the TB 78A ones and it’s close in terms of comfort to the foamies. Perhaps the 74A would be even more comfortable.

If you want to get the most comfort of the comfort, go for pneumatics. The bigger the better. The trade off comes with weight and size of course, so not ideal for a commuter board. Also with bigger tyres comes the issue of imbalance with the wheel, so you will need to balance it to prevent wobbling.

And never, NEVER ever use the Rspec 100mm crossover wheels. Those don’t even feel like urethane, they feel like hard plastic.

Ooh, you rank Abec Reflys 97mm higher than the 77a Caguamas. To me Evolve’s new ABEC GTR 97mm wheel felt slightly better, so I guess those feel the same as the original reflys? :man_shrugging:

I heard from @Kellag that the new evolve wheels are bomb.
I personally do not like the Abec Reflys 107 and 97 as much after awhile. They slip if i carve too hard, and or riding on a slightly damp ground. Boas are grippy and feel about the same in terms of comfort with the 107s despite the size diff.

Trampa gummies feel about the same as the 107s.

are your reflys well broken in? damp roads for sure I understand, and slipping I got too, but mostly prior to really breaking them in good.

Yep they’re pretty well broken in. Not sure why but that’s what i’ve experienced. I weigh 70kg if that helps.

Thanks for the heads up mate !

Hey Linny, just wanna know about these 2 wheels here, cos the happy thane on the cags are so well praised, would you say that the both of them have obvious difference or will the soft thane on the cag compensate the size difference?

Actually now that you mentioned it… the two wheels feel fairly similar.
I’ll need to ride both side by side to get a feel of it again. I’d say the overall ride feels just a tad better than the Reflys.

Caguamas feel softer than the Reflys, but the size difference compensates a bit.

So based in what you say, the 85mm cags actually feels better than the 97mm refly eh?

The refly being similar with the cags are also complimented by its bigger diameter/thicker thane correct?

I’m trying to set my expectations right about the cags

The blue cagumas are just amazing. I have them on my main push board. Since I put them on I am constantly overtaking bikes and am more worried about getting too fast to stop than about pushing. Together with a flex deck, any reasonable road is smooth sailing. They also add little weight to your board. I think everyone should have one set of these to compare with.

Exactly my thoughts. If you have the size for 97mm, then 97mm feels better, but just slightly. I prefer to be lower to the ground, so that’s why I would choose the caguamas.
