Weird motor clicking

I funally powered up my board and after only a few days of testing I started hearing a high pitched clicking noise, and it usually goes away at higher speeds. This is most likely a looses magnet, yes? What would be the best glue the glue it back? Should I consider battle hardening?

I think you won’t get around opening the motor can. Then you will see if it is a loose or broken magnet. I would use epoxy, and while your at it it is a good idea to do all magnets, they will become loose as well at some point.

Sounds like typical loose magnets.

It’s better to stop now and epoxy them in right now then wait until they move around more and eventually grind into your stator

Will i be fine just to do a 2km ride back home or should i just stop using it all together?

I’d stop using it all together. You’re risking losing the motor if it shatters a magnet

Contact @Bindings_McGee for expert details. They worked out great for the races. Didn’t over heat.

If you are patient, can easily be done your self. Prep and masking is 90% of the work.

Only the cans really need to be epoxyed for normal use.

I was exactly in your shoes 2 months ago. Hint of a click here and there and then one magnet completely dislodged. You could be good for 100miles or 100 ft.

My motor isn’t as bad yet, but it’s good to know that i’m not the only one

Broken magnets pull into your stator and start to grind them like this.

Edit: that wear line is pre battle hardening. If you are gonna harden them, do it before you ride on them. It’s much easier to do it with clean cans. About 1/3rd the prep is cleaning them.

I knocked one loose when I was a noob trying to get a pulley off w a hammer :confounded: I hadn’t even ridden it. Welcome to the club!

I “at’d” him largely to prompt a “how to thread”. i don’t know if he will make a service of this. I’d personally pay to have them done. Epoxy isn’t my fave.

Do you know what type of epoxy to use for this?

5 minute epoxy with a thickening agent. Micro silica beads. You basically tape the shaft and magnet surfaces and use a syringe to lay a line of material in the area between magnets on the can. You do about 4-6 groves on the 2-4 motors you are working on. Then wait for set. Repeat for 3-4 more rotations.

@b264, the jb weld disciple, might suggest a different/easier to use compound.

Can i use the beads from the drying silica packets? Is that even possible or is it dumb?

Think thats a different silica. Dont know if theres anyone who tried, so you could always be the first. :stuck_out_tongue:

Is there any other thickening agent i could use if i don’t find the good type of silica beads?

The silica is so fine that small air currents in room with windows closed cause them to blow out of container.

It’s not so much that is silica. It’s used because it’s inert, tough, , tiny, and uniformly shaped to help thicken the runny epoxy.

There are other agents you can use.
