Threaded Inserts: Which ones are best? And why?

Yes, exactly.

I am sending out a deck for CNC(with predrilled holes for inserts) and if I order for M5 inserts and wait for it to arrive then it will be just too late. I was hoping someone would just give me dimension of any m5 insert so that I can complete the file and send it out and later buy inserts and figure out which fits.

I found dimension on mcmaster but they are made of brass and have failed on me before, so didn’t want to use them. The one from Aliexpress don’t have dimensions.

I understand, but just don’t understand. Why can’t u just wait and drill the inserts when u have them, even if it is after CNC? Seems risky to drill holes to suit something you don’t actually have yet. Why not just wait…

can’t remember what size drill bit I used when I did my M5 ones. Do remember that I started with one size but was too hard to install so went up a drill bit size after trying it.

Agreed, I can tell you what size bit I would use on the inserts that I happen to have on hand but I wouldn’t feel comfortable drilling a hole without inserts in my possession to check the fit.

I haven’t looked up pilot hole dimensions in years because it’s so much easier to hold up a drill bit to the shank.

Does this help?

EDIT My experience has been the wood/glue in skateboards is hard, and need to drill a bit larger.

EZ Lok on the detail page for each insert has recommended drill hole sizes. I don’t think they have M5 softwood though.

Thanks but these have failed on me before.

Where are you guys ordering your soft wood inserts at?

I am going to be adding 2 layers of CF to the bottom of my deck, anything special I should know about drilling or installing inserts into CF?

As far as I know, If the deck is wood, you’ll be installing the inserts into wood. Regarding drilling through carbon, just make sure the bit is sharp (as always) and put some painter’s tape over the hole to keep it from splintering too much.

ok so put inserts into wood, then do carbon fiber layers then drill through carbon fiber… maybe just drill through cf while wet?

I laminate the carbon on then drill normally.
I was trying to say that the carbon won’t provide much bite, most of the strength will come from the insert’s contact with the wood

got it that seems easier then just seat it past the CF, thanks man

Yeah, and wait until it’s all set up hard. You want to cut on the fiber before you wet it out with resin or after it’s hard. Not so much in between if you can at all help it.

Someone here was recently trying to laminate a deck with inserts already in, seemed very tricky to me… but could be a good way to hide the insert if you figured out how to get it right👍

That was me. I didnt even attempt it, I just sacrificed the old inserts… some of them I had to drill out

New inserts arrived yesterday so I can put some holes in my nice new carbon

Last 2 builds I have had issues with them breaking on install or during use. I was salivating over the new torqueboard deck & enclosure and they are using the m5 stainless steel inserts. Mind explosions !!! After googling local options and trying bunnings ( Aussie homedepot) where do I find such wondrous saviors…sorry if the wrong forum…Dex I love the new deck, my next build (Devolve 4x4) will be based on it.

Ordered some I am not sure what the thread repair aspect is about I hope M4 is the inside thread looks like you need a tool to put them in as the slotted end is the tappered end. I was starting to consider going back to truck bolts and nuts :: Shudders::

you can install them with a M4 bolt and nut, I use them pretty much exclusively now.

Nice find. - brass is not a good option for vibration and fixing. ordered them with a tool it wasnt much more its the 25 days it takes to get here. I breifly considered the dhl option but it made it 3 times the price.
