Threaded Inserts: Which ones are best? And why?

What is the slot for if you are using a tool to put it in from the other way?

@anon54720240 some things, not all things.

The slot cuts thread into the timber as you install the insert.

Don’t need a special tool to install them. I just used a shorter m4 screw to install them on my deck. Drove them in with an Allen key.

Im definitely using those on my next under board enclosure.

@BillGordon can we get this thread merged with this one?

Threaded Inserts: Which ones are best? And why?

The inserts I used were shit. I used the brass inserts with the coarse thread and the hex drive. Every single one broke on the way in. I had to grind the top off all of them :man_facepalming:

they also damaged my reinforcement layers.

I will be using the ones @mmaner suggested above for future builds, just ordered 100 of them.

Biggest reason why inserts stop before flush, the hole isnt being drilled big enough to accept the insert.

You are likely right. But the inserts are still shit. The hole was less than 1mm smaller than the largest part of the thread and much bigger than the core.

Fair enough. Ive had a few inserts that just werent made for what we do with them.

For you next insert build, if the first insert has issues going in, go 1/64-1/32 bigger on your bit and continue.

Good advice  im just stubborn at times

Check out my post at the top of this thread.

Tldr if the slotted end tapers/angles in, it’s for cutting grooves. If the slot end is straight, it’s for a tool.

@mmaner What size drill bit do you recommend for these M4 inserts? My drill uses a specific type of bit with a cutout like this so I need to find the right one. Capture

I can measure it when I get home, but typically 1/16 less than the insert diameter.

Where did you get these pink washers [?] from?

Fantastic! Thanks a lot!

In practice, how long of a insert can you use? Like can I get a 10mm insert to be flush on the bottom without breaking through a 7 ply deck?

I always use calipers to measure the deck thickness and make sure the insert isn’t too long.

But is there a tolerance at the end like 2mm of wood and 1mm of airgap so you don’t notice anything on the far side?

Oh yeah, definitely. I’d say 2mm is safe as long as you’re predrilling the right sized hole.

I struggle with this. Drill bits have a tapered head. And decks are curved. So what I think will fit easily doesn’t always fit. Or I poke through the grip tape a bit when I drill. Next build I’m gonna grind 2mm off the inserts to make sure there’s enough clearance.

I typically use either 8mm for 9ply and 10mm for everything else. The stainless Aliexpress inserts are 8mm. The E-Z Lock inserts are .0375 in or 9.5mm.
