Threaded Inserts: Which ones are best? And why?

Anyone got a pro tip for fixing an accidentally pushed through insert? Just peel the grip tape back and epoxy it in? That’s the plan currently

You should try and sand the area around the insert some just to make sure the epoxy can soak into and get a good bond with the wood. It also wouldn’t hurt to try and scuff up or scratch the outside of the insert if possible. You probably don’t need to scratch up the insert but it doesn’t hurt to do it just to be safe

if it is inside a different material I would also try and scuff that material up. The sanding doesn’t apply only to wood

I’ve used T-nuts on 2 decks so far and they work very well, better than screw-in inserts.

Looking for some tips from insert pros…

I’ve got an insert on my tomiboi deck that pushes through whenever I put the screw in it. Is there a sneaky way to epoxy it in place without having to remove and replace the whole thing?

You sure the insert is moving and not that your bolt is just too long?

I’ve done this, looked quite similar :smiling_face_with_tear:

yeah, it’s the included hardware, all the other ones are fine. had it mounted previously without issue but had to take the enclosure off to find a rattle. when I put the enclosure back on I must have dislodged it :frowning:

You may have cross threaded it, get a tap in it.

Or…

Loctite a bolt into it, let cure, remove insert, epoxy hole, put insert back in

thanks for the info! i don’t thiiink it’s cross-threaded… probably best to just loctite and replace the insert, just didn’t want to have to go that route

Yeah that’s a shitty route  you could always just savage it and drill all of the inserts out and bolt thru :muscle:

pfft, this deck is way too pretty for that

plus I’d rather redo one insert than replace em all… my last build used sex bolts and removing the enclosure was a nightmare everytime

although if I mess up more inserts everytime I take this enclosure off, it may not even be worth it… time will tell :man_shrugging:

or u know, just drill thru that one hole for bolt thru instead of all of them

I wonder if putting a tiny flat washer at the bottom of the hole would better prevent screws from going through…?

So I tore a threaded insert in my deck, there’s still some insert in the hole but I can’t engage threads with anything anymore. What should I do about this? I’m considering digging out the spare insert and maybe glueing a new one in? Would that be strong enough to form the enclosure to my deck shape?

Bolt through :ok_hand:
