Stainless has no place in anything structural. Stainless is WEAK (say it again for the people in the back)
I still don’t understand people’s fascination with stainless (or titanium gasp). If you need corrosion protection, get zinc plated.

Aluminum flake or shiny blue plated (forget the name on McMaster) noob
Zinc is for bitches
You mean
Don’t test my MMC knowledge son. I have the catalog on my desk.
Welp, can’t say I didn’t already know I’m a bitch haha.
In all seriousness though - I just fucking hate the stock zinc plating color - like stainless steel/nickel looking. Yellow zinc plating is pretty ugly too
Zinc-Aluminum flake is fucking dank as fuck tho, as is blued zinc.
I’ve also now ran into… smooth black oxide. I’m pretty damn sure it’s black oxide at least. But zero grit to it - just pure smooth black, with the tiniest hint of a sheen, not matte like normal oxide.
It’s fuckin sex magic.
That blue just adds such a great pop to just about any build… is there any gold coating like that on 12.9?
Hmmm… can’t tell if that image uploaded correctly. Looks janky on the page but when I actually click on it it’s clear as it should be. Not sure if that’s because it’s linking metadata to my phone library w/the full res image on it when I click tho. If it looks like dogshit say something, cause on my actual phone it’s a poppin clear pic
Is there a good way to get a gunmetal finish on bolts? like some sort of protective coating or plating?
You can make your steel pulleys oil slick/titanium with a blow torch or oven & a quick oil quench. I really like it. Gun metal techniques typically wear incredibly quickly to my knowledge aside from super professional shit, maybe be completely incorrect about that tho.
Btw. Knurl tip set screws are sweeeeeeet. Highly recommend. Somebody may need to vanquish this all to derail jail.
& yeah - black oxide hardware is a fucking massive pet peeve of mine in esk8 now tbh. It’s all we use in machine shops tho. I was actually slightly sad that @MoeStooge was using black oxide on the three links… I guess they probably don’t get enough exposure to the elements even w/the salty SoCal sea air to really start to rust in his area tho. It looks good… but I think something non black oxide could look sexier.
I feel like bolts are very related to the threaded inserts they go into.
It’s like talking about penises in a thread about vaginas. It just makes sense.
heh?

probably black zinc aka black chrome passivation ![]()
Maybe electroplated brass

Or full brass

If you want a nice smooth silver finish, go with chromium plating

yep, just fine
Ugh, I think it might actually be black chrome stainless steel… I have a singular screw, thought it was near me but it’s down in hardwire pile. Really do want to know wtf it is, black stainless looks most like it from internet pics.
Silver chromium hardware is straight fucking boomer tier disgusting
Fuck is black chrome just zinc related lmao? Damn, I stepped bad didn’t I
I disagree, chrome is pretty. And I turn only 28 tomorrow.
I just tried 4m brass threaded inserts on my Hummie deck. Learned the hard way that the deck was hard wood. Brass inserts are definitely too brittle. Should I try stainless steel or some other material inserts or just cut my loss and go with m5? Willing to pay premium for something that lasts.
I had the same issue. Broken brass but stainless worked perfect.
i just wrote this up last night… might be helpful to peeps.
I used hardwood 4mm brass inserts in my hummie and they work perfect
User installation makes a big difference on how well they work
Ezlok on amazon for reference
works fine for me, probably a browser extension blocking something.
Yeah or sometimes if you’re at work, firewalls block certain servers
Oh damn, that sucks.
Perhaps @BillGordon or @DerelictRobot can offer some further insight
I’m not having any trouble with image loading ATM.
