I saw above and had changed this before trying.
Yeah I’m also trying with loaded hubs, never had hubs before and I really like these guys. Feel like I might be spoiling myself by starting with these instead of cheapo stuff but couldn’t turn these down
You did. I have had 2 pairs of shit hubs, one set of good hubs, and these great hubs. Need to try hummies one day
yeah hummies are the comforting story I tell myself, like don’t worry there’s still a step up you didn’t completely goof it
Had a fun day today. Completely cooked one of the motors.
Was going downhill after a pretty steep up hill and noticed a good amount of resistance and smoke coming out of the motor. The other motor was hot but not unbearable to touch.
Weird thing is, spinning the motor by hand feels normal, but spinning the wheel it’s really hard. Removed the wheel and wheel gear, and the remote can’t even turn the motor at all, just makes shit noises.
Plugged the other motor into that side of the esc and it spun up no dramas.
No faults recorded.
On the steep uphill, i stopped a couple of times to see how the shfi handled it. It gave a few little jitters, but nothing serious and started rolling almost instantly after a little jitter.
Do you guys reckon the little stutters from the start of the shfi could cause a motor to cook itself?
Also strange and worth noting, the 70kph recorded is impossible and took place while sitting down before going down the hill…
Are you okay? Did you fall?
So the issue followed the motor when you swapped sides? I had a fault like this recent at 35mph+ and ate shit. DM if you wanna talk details
Time for reachers
Nah the problem was in the motor, the other motor worked fine on the side that broke.
I didn’t fall, no fault, because i was rolling downhill, gravity kept the fucked wheel turning when the esc couldnt.
Reachers are not magic
They’re great motors but I’m tired of people peddling them as indestructible. Copper windings are copper windings. They even run hotter than Flipsky
Yeah i’m not getting reachers, fuck that. Will order some saites.
Forward momentum, based on Gravity™
I’ve not found this to be true. I’ve not had any thermal throttling since changing to radium/reacher. Sure, I’ve not found them indestructible but definitely many many steps above any flipsky motor… easily.
Thats just my riding tho and im by no means thrashing them or using them at full capacity (or even close to)
You certainly cant compare them against those fucking horrible flipsky/bn 6384’s with that stinking screaming harmonic… easily the worst motor ive ever fitted.
Mine have run cooler than FS for equivalent power, the ventillation makes a difference.
I wouldn’t use those either. The latest generation FS motors don’t make nearly as much noise.
What would you recommend people use?
What do you guys have against Reachers?
I was thermal throttling my FS/BN motors in Winter temps… haven’t had an issue with my Reachers even on the hottest Summer days. It’s been a significant improvement.
I’m cheap and i don’t feel as if the extra cost is justified to my needs.
I don’t believe these motors overheated. The ‘good’ motor was doing the work of both of the motors for a good stint and it wasn’t even close to being overheated.
They say the poor man pays twice and that’s exactly what i’m doing if i manage to kill the saites then i’ll hit up @Tony_Stark for some reachers.
Nothing against them. If you gave me a bunch of cash for a build I’d buy them in a heartbeat.
I just get annoyed when someone has any issue with any motor that isn’t a reacher and someone else says “get reachers” as if they’re certain a reacher would not have that same issue.
Copper windings are copper windings
Copper windings are copper windings sure, but that isn’t all there is to motors - plus if you’re gonna swap motors - You may as well go up a tier. Especially with sales bringing prices down as low as 370 for a set of 6485’s, i’d say they’re worth it.
You get :
Actual open can airflow and cooling
Quad bearing, with ease of replacement
Nicer, more durable cans
Better balancing/reduced harmonic noise
Higher peak amperage rating
30/44mm mounting patterns
As far as i know, nobody has managed to fry a set of reachers in any regular sense, but correct me if i’m wrong. I abuse the crap out of mine in hot weather with no issues.
How are they overcoming magnetic saturation?
Also $250 vs $370 for what I consider a consumable is a hard buy for me.
Again, I like the motors and would buy them if I had the extra budget for it
I’m no EE, but if i’m taking a guess it’s the higher rated magnets they’re using and being able to actually provide some cooling to them with the impeller fan built into the can.
