Busted out the good ol’ modular mold. Decided to go with 7 layers of maple and for the first time, fiberglass on top and bottom. Not perfect, but not too shabby!
Shout out @IDEA, these look AMAZING. Extremely responsive seller too, overall 10/10 buying experience. I’m just so sorry they’ve been sitting for so long:
Even if using 12S I went with 138kv because this is a HARDCORE mountainboard. I enjoy torque way more than I do speed, my old mountainboard had that kv and I absolutely loved how it would climb whatever I threw at it (until my old focboxes just couldn’t take it anymore)
ESC
I’ve built a few boards with MakerX ESCs for friends and had a great experience, so went with the DV6S (no HV shenanigans here)
Assembly
I strongly recommend getting cheap skilled labor to build your batteries (my GF is the best):
TBH not much to say about this battery, except for maybe the 3D printed holders. Standard 12S5P brick layout, 30mm 0.2 nickel strips, 6 welds per cell, LLT BMS with bypassed discharge path.
It uses a combination of rigid (PETG) and flexible (TPU) materials to achieve a twist-and-lock action. Please excuse my wet ass black PETG print.
Parts are split to ensure maximum layer adhesion, but I’m still a little bit worried about the battery box given how heavy it is…I think it’s worth experimenting though. Probably final parts are going to be printed in nylon, and the flat parts of the box cut from FR4.
Deck and trucks: 9/10. Deck has just the right amount of flex, offroad is dreamy. Trucks feel amazing but a tad soft, I feel like they will wobble at speed (feel being the key word, since I chickened out and didn’t push). I do have harder bushings to test.
ESC/Motor combo: 12/10 holy fucking shitballs. Going from 65A each to 120A is INSANE. I have to be careful and lean forwards a lot…and I’m not even close to full throttle. Everything seems to stay very cool, but will put them through their paces in the spanish summer.
Enclosures/Locking mechanism: A few tweaks are necessary, but surprisingly good? I have to beef up some TPU parts and add some extra support points, but I’m just surprised nothing flew off the deck after one too many rocks/jumps.
Remote: Aaaah why did I have to redo the whole thing? Running into a few issues due to the complete software rewrite. To the debugcopter it is.
